VODAFONE WILL BE McLAREN MERCEDES TITLE SPONSOR
Peter Bamford, Vodafone’s Chief Marketing Officer, and Ron Dennis, CEO of the McLaren Group and McLaren Mercedes Team Principal, at the McLaren Technology Centre.
Vodafone and the McLaren Mercedes Formula One team today announce a long-term sponsorship agreement, commencing January 2007 which will last into the next decade. Vodafone will become Title Sponsor of the Team – ‘Vodafone McLaren Mercedes’ and the ‘Official Mobile Partner’.
The sponsorship demonstrates Vodafone’s ongoing commitment to the Formula One World Championship, a sport which continues to deliver massive global television coverage and which has significant appeal for Vodafone’s consumer and business customers around the world.
The title sponsorship includes a number of benefits:
- The team name will be ‘Vodafone McLaren Mercedes’.
- Vodafone will be the ‘Official Mobile Partner’ of the team.
- Dominant Title Sponsorship branding on the new 2007 cars, drivers' and pit crews' overalls and helmets and other ancillary elements.
- Significant marketing activation opportunities including hospitality, merchandising, and promotional rights including access to drivers and track days.
- Behind the scenes access to the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes racing team, enabling Vodafone to bring exclusive content to Vodafone live! with 3G customers, allowing them to ‘live the motor racing experience’ and feel part of the racing team.
- Additional content will include Vodafone McLaren Mercedes racing news updates, test results and full team biographies, the McLaren story, exclusive Vodafone McLaren Mercedes team games, videos, ringtones, wallpapers and screensavers.
Commenting on the agreement Peter Bamford, Vodafone’s Chief Marketing Officer said, "We are excited about this new phase of involvement in motor racing. As Title Sponsor of the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes team it raises our association with Formula One to the ultimate level. The new agreement delivers a fantastic marketing platform; the associative rights we acquire as a result of this new sponsorship provide us with additional opportunities to
continue to raise brand awareness, build brand preference and drive revenue. It will also provide our customers with unique and exciting content through Vodafone live! with 3G.”
“This is only the third time for more than 30 years that the opportunity to become the team’s Title Sponsor has existed," said Ron Dennis, Chairman and CEO of the McLaren Group and McLaren Mercedes Team Principal. "The status of the brand and the level of activation in support of the sponsorship were key criteria for our choice of Title Sponsor and Vodafone over-delivers in all respects. In addition, as our agreement is long-term, this provides important stability within the Team, allowing us to focus fully on our objective of winning races and Championships together. We are delighted to welcome Vodafone to the team and look forward to many future successes."
"We welcome Vodafone as the new title sponsor to the team," said Norbert Haug, Vice-President, Mercedes-Benz Motorsport. "The fact that a world renowned brand like Vodafone with such an impressive market performance has joined us is of significant importance not only for the team but also for all our world class sponsor partners. I am sure that each one will benefit from the respective activities of the other, which is a first class prospect for everybody involved."

Vodafone has revealed they will jump ship from Ferrari, to sponsor the McLaren team for the 2007 Formula 1 season. While Vodafone maintains their move was motivated by a desire for an increased brand presence in Formula 1, their real reason is preposterously obvious.
Vodafone has expressed before that they are very displeased with Ferrari's performance in 2005 and because of this, their image has taken a hit. The mobile phone giant, apparently not one to believe in Ferrari's ability to fight back, decided to become the title sponsor of the McLaren Mercedes team, rather than face any possible future embarrassment. Vodafone's Chief Marketing Officer Peter Bamford had this to say about moving their sponsorship to McLaren:
"The title sponsorship was very important to us and we wanted to be associated with winning and with leading edge technology, but we also wanted an alignment in terms of culture and values. This is very important to us and to McLaren. This is an outstandingly good partnership to take us to the next phase in developing the brand. We fit very well with McLaren."
It is rather obvious that the most important word in this statement is winning, something Ferrari apparently can no longer deliver to their sponsors. Many Tifosi see this move by Vodafone to be misguided as they believe Ferrari will return to dominance in 2006. This in fact is quite possibly true, Ferrari's recent testing has yielded impressive results and with Toyota and Williams joining Bridgestone, the tyre gap should no longer be as substantial as in 2005.
Whatever the outcome of the 2006 season, Vodafone will become the title sponsor of the McLaren Mercedes team for around £23 million, a similar amount to what their current deal with the Scuderia is worth. This may very well prove to be a poor choice for Vodafone, taking into account Ferrari's massive brand image and presence in Formula 1 as well as their unparalleled abilities to dominate the sport, though this will not be ascertained until the 2007 season commences

WORLD CHAMPION FERNANDO ALONSO SECURES VODAFONE McLAREN MERCEDES DRIVE
Woking, Great Britain, Monday 19th December 2005: The 2005 Formula One World Champion Fernando Alonso and Vodafone McLaren Mercedes will be joining forces for the 2007 Formula One season. Today's announcement comes only five days after Vodafone and McLaren Mercedes confirmed Vodafone's title sponsorship effective from January 2007 and forms an important part of the team's long term strategic partnership.
"Its great that our strong belief in the strength and competitiveness of the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes package has been further endorsed by the World Champion," said Ron Dennis, Team Principal and Chairman and CEO of the McLaren Group. "We always make it clear that we want to be the best and the only way of achieving this objective is by attracting the best people, the best drivers and the best sponsors. To be able to announce Vodafone as only McLaren's third title partner in more than 30 years and Fernando's employment within only a few days is fantastic news for the team, our Partners, Formula One and the fans."
"We are in discussions with our current drivers' Kimi Raikkonen and Juan Pablo Montoya regarding the 2007 season," continues Ron Dennis. "Both Juan Pablo and Kimi are extremely talented, professional and competitive Formula One drivers and they have and will continue to concentrate on our joint challenge for the Championships."
"Fernando and McLaren Mercedes wanted to make the announcement as soon as possible in a controlled and professional manner to allow McLaren Mercedes, Fernando, Kimi and Juan Pablo to focus on the preparations for the 2006 season," states Ron Dennis. "Our aim for next year remains absolutely clear to everybody within the team – we want to win races and be in a position where we might have two Formula One World Champions driving for Vodafone McLaren Mercedes in 2007."
"We are pleased to welcome Fernando to the team and look forward to working both with him and our new title sponsor in 2007," said Norbert Haug, Vice-President, Mercedes-Benz Motorsport. "To have a World Champion joining the team is a great endorsement and will create a tremendous amount of excitement. However for now our focus must remain on the 2006 season where we want to go one better than we did in 2005."
"To become part of a team with such a desire to succeed and passion for performance is a dream come true for any Formula One driver," said 2005 Formula One World Champion Fernando Alonso. "I'm very excited about 2007 and the fantastic opportunity to drive for Vodafone McLaren Mercedes. It will be a new beginning for me and a tremendous challenge and from what I have heard about this exciting new Partnership there is something to look forward to. Obviously I will be sad to leave Renault but sometimes possibilities come along which are just too good to miss. I'm pleased that we are able to make this announcement already now as it will allow my current team and I to focus 100 per cent on defending the World Championships next year."
