THE world's biggest aircraft carrier has left behind a trail of debris off the Queensland coast ranging from cutlery and bottles to a $48 million fighter jet.
The captain of the USS Ronald Reagan said an investigation was under way into how an FA-18C Hornet fighter jet crashed into the sea while trying to land on the carrier during exercises on Saturday night.
The ship's commanders have also launched an inquiry into the ship's garbage disposal practices after the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service impounded several bags of plastic rubbish and other debris that were dumped from the carrier at sea. Bags have been found off Moreton Island and in Moreton Bay. Yesterday, a bag was washed up on the Sunshine Coast. Documents in the bags identified the carrier as the source of the rubbish.
A spokesman for AQIS said the bags would be kept in quarantine for several days before they are disposed of "properly". The carrier, which has another 44 FA-18s on board, left Brisbane on Friday after a four-day visit hailed as a public relations triumph.

Dá pra notar que os australianos não perderam o senso de humor britânico "o porta-aviões deixou um rastro de lixo ao longo da costa, que inclui desde talheres e latas até um caça de 48 milhões de dólares"
