Prime Minister of France negotiates cooperation agreements in Brazil
The Prime Minister of France, Francois Fillon arrived on Wednesday
(14) to Brazil. The idea is to expand cooperation between the two
countries and the strategic partnership in the defense sector.
Tomorrow (15), Fillon meets with President Rousseff. One proposal
includes the participation of France in the construction of an
aircraft carrier of the project of modernization of the Brazilian
Navy.
Fillon traveled to Brazil with a delegation of 40 people, 28 of whom
are entrepreneurs as well as parliamentarians and three ministers of
state. The prime minister has a schedule of four days in Brazil.
According to aides to Fillon, based on the agreement signed in 2009
between France and Brazil to arms sales valued at $ 12.3 billion, the
prime minister will show interest in other contracts in the sector,
such as participation in the construction the future aircraft carriers
in Brazil. The company DCNS has made a proposal for the design of
future aircraft carrier.
The French government is also interested in the Brazilian project of
renovation of the fleet of frigates and ocean patrols and surveillance
of maritime borders. The Civil Aeronautics is another strategic
sector, and one of the aims is to intensify relations in this area.
The main point of discussion is the purchase of 36 Rafale fighters for
the renewal of the Brazilian fleet.
According to defense expert Nelson During, the Rafale is also in
contention for a Navy contract, which includes 48 aircraft.
In the nuclear context, Brazil intends to purchase four new reactors
by 2030, beyond the three that already exist in the plants of Angra
dos Reis. France, known for its expertise in developing nuclear energy
for civilian purposes, Brazil plans to leverage this interest to
negotiate.
The crisis in Europe also will be highlighted during the visit. It
will be addressed during a seminar at the Federation of Industries of
São Paulo (Fiesp), which will feature the participation of businessmen
from both countries. Brazil is the non-European country that receives
more foreign direct investment in France. Around 500 French companies
are established in the country.
During the visit of French Prime Minister, will also be signed several
bilateral agreements. One of them, connected to Science Without
Borders program provides for the training of about 10 000 students on
scholarships in the country. There are also agreements in the areas of
information technology and Welfare.
Fillon's agenda also includes the unveiling of a monument
commemorating the victims of flight AF447, which crashed on May 31,
2009 in the Atlantic Ocean. The ceremony must take place Friday (16),
