Nigerian Army Takes Delivery of China’s New Main Battle Tanks and Armored Vehicles
The Nigerian Army (NA) has taken delivery of VT-4 main battle tanks, ST-1 tank destroyer and SH-2 truck-mounted howitzers purchased by the Nigerian federal governmen to boost its fight against Boko Haram Terrorists (BHTs) and other criminal elements across the country. The armaments which were built to specification, were ordered from China after that country’s state-owned China Ordnance Industries Group Corporation Limited (Norinco) won the Nigerian federal government’s bid for the acquisition of military hardwares last year.

The VT4 also named MBT-3000 for the export version is a new generation of main battle tank designed and manufactured by the Chinese Defense Company Norinco. The main armament of the VT4 consists of 125mm smoothbore gun fitted with a thermal sleeve and fume extractor. It is fed by an automatic loader which holds a total of 22 projectiles and charges which can be loaded at the rate of eight per minute. To increase the body side protection, the MBT-3000 can be fitted with explosive reactive armour (ERA).
The ST1 is a tank destroyer 8×8 armoured vehicle designed and manufactured by the Chinese Defense Company Norinco. Main armament of the ST1 105mm tank destroyer consists of one NATO standard 105mm rifled gun that fires a full range of ammunition as APFSDS (Armour-piercing fin-stabilized discarding-sabot), HE (High-explosive), HEAT (High Explosive Anti-Tank), APAM (Anti-Personnel/Anti-Materiel) and gun-launched ATGM (Anti-Tank Guided Missile). The hull and turret are of all-welded steel armour construction, which provides the crew with protection from small arms fire and shell splinters.
The SH-5 is a further development of the SH2 which is armed with a 105 mm/37-calibre ordnance howitzer designed and manufactured by the Chinese Defense Company Norinco. The SH5 is based on a 6 × 6 cross-country chassis that is a new design that is also used for the SH2 122 mm (6 × 6) self-propelled artillery system. . The 105 mm gun is mounted on a turntable fitted to a flatbed just behind the crew compartment. The SH-2 was mainly aimed at the export market. The SH5 has a maximum range of 18 km.

US Army Converts An Infantry Brigade to Stryker Brigade
Throughout history the U.S. Army has proven, through multiple spectrums of operations and locations, that it is the most lethal and capable ground combat force. To continue to shape the Army to remain lethal and ready for any type of mission, in September of 2018 the Army announced the conversion of two brigade combat teams, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division out of Fort Bliss, Texas and the 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division out of Fort Carson, Colorado. Nearly two years after the announcement, leaders and Soldiers gathered, both physically and virtually, in order to abide by social distancing guidelines, for the brigade’s re-designation ceremony, June 15, on Fort Carson, Colorado.
Maj. Gen. Matthew W. McFarland, commanding general of the 4th Infantry Division, speaks about the brigade’s history and future plans as Stryker brigade, June 15, 2020, during 2nd SBCT’s re-designation ceremony on Fort Carson, Colo. During the ceremony, Knight and Maj. Gen. Matthew W. McFarland, commanding general for the 4th Inf. Div., talked about the brigade’s history and future from an infantry brigade to Stryker brigade. “When this re-designation was first announced, then Secretary of the Army Esper said this shift was part of a broader strategy to ensure that our Army remain the most lethal ground combat force able to deploy, fight and win against any adversary, anytime, anywhere. And while we don’t know where or when the next fight will take place, Stryker’s will certainly be a key part of that fight against any potential threat.”

The brigade began their conversion process in the fall of last year. Since the beginning of the brigade’s conversion the unit has turned in more than 11,000 pieces of equipment no longer need for a Stryker brigade and has received more than 30% of Stryker vehicles, as well as adjusting personnel manning. Since the beginning of the process, organizationally, the brigade has closed three infantry companies across the units maneuver battalions and gained one new troop, Echo Troop, to the brigade’s squadron. The brigade’s efforts throughout the conversion have not been unnoticed by senior leaders.
According to the brigade leadership the unit plans to finalize their conversion in late 2021. Conversion of 2nd Brigade, 4th Infantry Division to a Stryker Brigade represents the culmination of a major U.S. Army transformation effort which began in 2013 with the addition of a third maneuver battalion for each BCT (brigade combat team). Soldiers of 2nd Brigade should take pride in their hard work as they complete this conversion and prepare for their certification exercise at Fort Irwin. U.S. Army soldiers of 2nd Brigade, 4th Infantry, can be very proud of what they’ve already accomplished as they look forward to future challenges.
