Band: C/G Range: 50NM maximum
Classes que o usam:
Greece: MEKO-200HN, Super Vita class PCG
Indonesia: Sigma class FFL
Oman: Qahir class FFL
Portugal: MEKO-200PN
Coreia do Sul: KDX I class DDG, KDX II class DDG, LPX program
Turkia: Kilic class PCG
Alcances aproximados: 65NM air search (large/high), 45NM air search (small/low), 6NM missile warning, 18NM surface search/navigation, 10NM periscope detection

SMART-S (Signaal Multibeam Acquisition Radar for Targeting) is an all-weather 3-D target indication and surveillance radar system intended for all types of naval vessels from fast patrol boats upwards. Its prime application is as the main sensor for data handling and weapon system control, and it has a very high performance in the presence of heavy clutter and electronic countermeasures. The equipment has been designed to cope with small high-speed anti-ship missiles with radar cross-sections down to 0.1 m2 and approach speeds of Mach 3+, which can be either sea skimmers or arriving from high angles of 70° or more.
The SMART system operates in F-Band (the traditional of this frequency band name was S-Band, the designator is SMART-S therefore), where it offers an optimum balance between range, clutter rejection and antenna dimensions. It provides automatic detection, track initiation and track maintenance of both air and surface threats, with gapless coverage over a complete hemisphere from the sea surface upwards. It incorporates anti-clutter and electronic counter-countermeasures features such as multiple reception beams with ultra-low sidelobes in elevation and azimuth, a clutter analysis sensor, broadband transmission, pulse repetition frequency and radio frequency agility per burst and a jamming analysis sensor. SMART is designed to track 160 air targets and 40 surface targets simultaneously.
The system comprises an antenna and three main below-decks units. The hydraulically stabilised antenna consists of a single-element wideband transmitting array, and a multi-element stripline receiving array. The ultra-low sidelobe phased array allows the formation of multiple receive beams in elevation. To ensure high sensitivity, preprocessing of the received signals takes place in the antenna unit itself. The output of the 16 antennas is fed to a digital beam forming network in which the 12 independent elevation beams are produced, after which Doppler Fast Fourier Transform processing and automatic tracking is carried out. The transmitter is based on a high power, pulse-to-pulse coherent Travelling Wave Tube. Integral identification friend-or-foe can be provided.

On 2 June the new ESSM (Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile) control capability on board of the Hellenic Navy's HS Salamis of the Hydra class proved to be successful.
In the Live Firing Test, the Thales STIR fire control system guided the ESSM missile with such accuracy to an IRIS drone at a range of approximately 5 NM, that the missile fully hit the drone. This test demonstrates once again the high level of accuracy provided by Thales systems and the experience Thales possesses with controlling ESSM missiles.
In May 2007 Thales was awarded a contract by the NATO SeaSparrow Project Office to upgrade the SeaSparrow FCS on board of the Hydra class frigates of the Hellenic Navy to an ESSM-capable FCS, and to act as system integrator for this project incl. the re-integration of the modified GMVLS Mk48. The selection of Thales as system integrator was a logical one, as the Hydra class vessels are already equipped with the Thales Combat Information System, one MW08 surveillance radar and two Thales STIR weapon control systems per ship. The Hydra class vessels were commissioned between 1992 and 1998 and consist of four frigates displacing about 3400 tons each.
Following the Live Firing Test on HS Salamis the other three ships of the Hydra Class will be upgraded in 2008 and 2009. The Hellenic Navy is the fourth Navy Thales has supplied with ESSM capabilities. The other three are the Canadian, German and Netherlands Navies

COUNTERMEASURES
There are two Mk 36 SRBOC (Super Rapid Blooming Offboard Chaff) quad launchers from Sippican Hycor which fire chaff to a range of 4km. An AN/SLQ-25 Nixie towed torpedo decoy, from Argon ST of Newington, Virginia, is fitted which has two towed units that emit acoustic signals from an onboard transmitter.
ARGOSystems APECS II radar detection and jamming system can identify and jam up to 16 threats simultaneously. Detection range is 370km for ships and 93km for aircraft.
SENSORS
Air and surface search is provided by Thales Nederland's SMART-S 3D radar. This operates in the F-band and range is 100km for a 2m² target. Thales Nederland's LW-08 2D long-range search radar is also fitted, which operates in the D-band and has a range of 230km. Two Thales Nederland STIR tracking and illuminating radars provide fire control for the Seasparrow missile and 76mm gun. STIR operates in I and K bands and has a range of 140km. There is also a Thales (formerly Racal 1226) navigation radar.
"The radar detection and jamming system can identify and jam up to 16 threats simultaneously."
The ship is fitted with Thales Underwater Systems (formerly Thomson Marconi Sonar) Anaconda DSBV 61 very low frequency passive towed array sonar mounted on the hull at the bow. Thales Nederland's PHS-36 medium frequency active search and attack sonar is mounted on the hull at the front. The RNlN is planning to upgrade the ASW suite with a low frequency active sonar (LFAS).
