Anzu escreveu:The suggested new army plan discussed last year has been presented, even if it is stressed that these are only drafts at the moment. The final plans will be presented to the Government in October.
These are the plans at the moment:
-Brigade Nord in Inner Troms will continue as the primary army command,
-The armoured battalion with support, consisting of conscripts will remain in Inner Troms.
-The artillery battalion will be given additional abilities by getting SAMs and surface to surface missiles with a range of 200+ km.
-Support functions such as logistics, reconnaissance and field medicine will be kept, but not necessarily in the same form as now.
-A third battalion will replace the current 2. Bataljon of light infantry. The battalion will be mechanized and with a very short mobilization time of 1-2 days.
-A new, standing cavalry battalion (combined of mechanized and light troops) will be set up in Porsanger in Finnmark.
-Telemark Bataljon at Rena north of Oslo will be halved compared to the current size, but will rapidly be possible to be strengthened by reserve forces on contracts.
-The Brigade will get a dedicated conscription center, most likely on Skjold in Inner Troms where 2. Bataljon currently is based.
-The conscription time for the soldiers making up the brigade will be increased to 16 months, while it will remain 12 months for soldiers in the Royal Guard and on other guard duties.
-The total number of conscripts may be rediced by about 800/year. The ones serving in the Brigade for 16 months will get yearly refresher training and be part of a reserve force with a mobilization time of 24-48 hours for four years,
-The plan is that about 60% of the Brigade should be in continued readiness with the rest on short mobilization notice.
-The army wants to purchase lighter and more mobile tanks rather than upgrading the existing Leo 2A4, as previously was the plan. The rumor is that they should be based around CV90 with an unmanned 120mm cannon, but nothing is finalized.
-The Home Guards will remain, but set under Army command and in Finnmark also under army control. It will be a force of 38,000 soldiers, primarily on security duty.
-This new combined land command will also be responsible for a new ranger company in South Varanger, by the Russian border.
Some thoughts on this:
The army structure is moved further north than before, with firepower moved from the southern and eastern parts of the country to particularly Finnmark (the northernmost county). The new cavalry battalion will have the ability to recon and forward point in long range artillery and missile strikes which is a clear force escalation. This also paradoxically indicates that the previous doctrine of delay and destruction of infrastructure seems to be changed to escalation of hostilities, so that every kind of Russian aggression, including hybrid warfare and green men will lead to war and a triggering of NATO article 5.
The only reasonable scenario where the armed force were to be used is if Russia through a strategic ambush wants to secure their nukes and submarine bases on the Kola peninsula with a wider perimeter. If any other conflict in the World would make Russia feel they need this kind of strategic depth it would need to occupy parts of Finnmark (and the northen parts of Finland and Sweden), to cut off the Arctic Ocean. As I see it the new doctrine is that every incursion, even if limited would be countered with so much force that by using long ranged and stand-off weapons that everything would escalate to war with the whole alliance.
