We need to see Putin for what he is: an old school dictator who has destroyed democracy. He willingly kills those who challenge his authority. He has committed war crimes that are every bit as detestable as those committed by Hitler, Stalin, and Slobodan Milošević.
It is now obvious that Putin's plan to subsume Ukraine was never a response to NATO expansion. Rather he was always someone who rejected Gorbachev's "Glasnost" and "Perestroika" policies. He simply wanted to perpetuate a totalitarian Soviet Union.
Putin underestimated the extent to which Ukraine had become an independent sovereign state and the willingness of its people to defend their homeland. He also miscalculated the West's commitment to support Ukraine. He has paid a terrible price.

The net result of Putin's actions is that Russia is now fighting a proxy war against the West. If he didn't posses nuclear weapons, we might have already seen a repeat of coalition forces evicting Putin from Ukraine just as they forced Saddam Hussein out of Kuwait.
Ongoing support for Ukraine may lead to direct confrontation with Russia. As much as we'd prefer to avoid this, once Putin runs out of conventional munitions and failure weakens him politically, a desperate situation may trigger desperate measures.
Putin is hoping a war of attrition will gradually go his way. If the conflict continues into winter and beyond, he thinks this will sap Western support for Ukraine. He's now using energy and food as weapons to achieve the desired outcome.
This is why it is essential for the West to continue to support Ukraine. If UAF can go on the offensive and retake lost territory, Putin will be forced to withdraw. It will be a humiliating experience, but even when Putin exist Ukraine, we cannot risk lifting sanctions.
The clear and present danger that Russia now poses will not recede whether Ukraine cedes territory to Russia. If Putin tastes victory, he will only want more. But a sound defeat will force a reset in Russia and this may be a catalyst for regime change from within.
