F1: FIA PERMITE APENAS TRÊS MOTORES PARA A TEMPORADA DE 2018

As críticas à utilização de apenas quatro motores por temporada por parte de equipas, pilotos e até adeptos parecem não ter sido levadas em consideração por parte da FIA, que para 2018 já anunciou vai diminuir o número para três. Ou seja, em 2017 as equipas podiam usar quatro motores para 20 Grandes Prémios, enquanto para 2018 apenas poderão ser usados três motores para 21 Grandes Prémios.
No Grande Prémio de Itália deste ano existiu um total de 150 lugares de penalização, divididos por nove pilotos, devido a trocas de componentes das Unidades de Potência que excedem o número máximo permitido, mas a tendência é para a temporada de 2018 estes números irem crescendo, uma vez que os motores não parecem aguentar tantas corridas como a FIA deseja.
Este regulamento tem como objetivo baixar os custos da competição. Mas vários engenheiros já referiram por várias vezes que esta restrição apenas aumenta os custos, uma vez que os gastos para motores mais fiáveis são muito superiores aos custos que utilizar vários motores por temporada.

O Villeneuve, na base do "eu os conheço muito bem", cantou a pedra (se não me engano em 2014) beeem antes, de que não via futuro algum para a Mclaren na "parceria" com os arrogantes nipônicos da Honda... E o resultado conhecemos bem...

There’s only one problem : the engine
Aston Martin Red Bull Racing F1 team has a serious problem to deal with in the short term, which is to find a competitive engine. It will lose its supply of Renault units from the end of 2018 and although it is testing out the works Honda engines in the Toro Rosso next season (above), few hold out much hope that this will be the silver bullet that ends Red Bull’s weakness in this area.
All the noises from sources with knowledge of the Honda F1 project suggest that the fixes necessary to change the management culture and make that engine competitive are not in place and there is little sign of that changing. Another difficult year is in prospect for 2018 and it would take a massive leap of faith – or the ability for Red Bull and its proxies (like Mario Illien) to directly intervene in the programme in the next 12 months – to make it a viable bet for the main Red Bull team in 2019.
The discussions around future F1 engine technology continue, driven by Ross Brawn and his team, but the latest noises are that the manufacturers seem to be pushing for the continuation of the MGU-H component of the hybrid system, which is the costly and complex element.
Pamler has stopped short of getting involved on the engine building side, as Aston is tiny in comparison with Mercedes and even Ferrari, but did note rather optimistically, “The power unit discussions (in Formula One) are of interest to us, but only if the circumstances are right.
“We are not about to enter an engine war with no restrictions in cost or dynamometer hours but we believe that if the FIA can create the right environment we would be interested in getting involved.”
The power unit has always been the weak point of the Red Bull Racing proposition and between now and 2020 (ie three seasons) that will continue to be the case. It is of concern to the team’s star drivers, Daniel Riccardo and Max Verstappen, both of whom urgently want to win.
From 2021 onwards, there should be some form of independent engine maker, like Cosworth, able to supply competitive engines at competitive prices. It is one of the key pillars of the F1 plan Ross Brawn is trying to develop with the FIA rule makers and manufacturers.
As for Red Bull’s owner Dietrich Mateschitz, he is frustrated by this hybrid Power Unit era of F1, by its cost and what he considers its divisiveness and lack of entertainment value. His investment in Red Bull Racing has had to increase with the loss of prize money and the Infiniti money (from 2014 onwards); estimates put it at a net spend to Red Bull of around $40m a year now, compared to $10m in 2013.
So you can see why there was pressure from the top to bring in a title sponsor to get that net spend down.
If he ends up with an uncompetitive Honda engine in 2019 and the new rules from 2021 don’t move the engine formula in what he considers the right direction, one can imagine him thinking of packing in F1. He has threatened it in the past, but if his key indicators are all in the wrong direction maybe this time he would quit.
Against that is the growth of the F1 business under Liberty Media. If there is more coming back in revenues, costs are brought under control so the net spend is minimised and the Red Bull brand is reaching more and younger audiences, then the decision to leave becomes harder.

O Grupo Daimler AG (Mercedes) é dono de 5% da Aston Martin. A RedBull está se amarrando com todo mundo. Renault, Honda, agora Mercedes, já foi Ferrari. Sem falar na parceria que tem com a VW em outras categorias, que já manifestou interesse em entrar na F1 com Audi ou Porsche, dependendo das futuras regras.

O melhor que aconteceu foi em 2OO9 a Honda ter abandonado e o Ross Brawn ter posto um motor Mercedes naquele chassis.

As Honda is about to move into its 4th era of Formula 1 activity it must be contemplating the lessons of the past. The RA109 could have set a new benchmark in Formula 1, as it would have been packed with innovative design features, and the car is spawned, the Brawn BGP001 went on to win both titles something Honda badly wanted. If Honda had not pulled out of Formula 1 would it have been as successful as Brawn, or perhaps even more successful? It is impossible to say, but perhaps the RA109 was a step too far, too much advanced technology and complex a design. Nobody will ever know.
The free thinking engineers at Tochigi who came up with the RA109 in conduction with the engineers in Brackley had obviously not been given many limits on what was possible. Note this design (above and below) called the O-nose from a few years earlier when the team was still BAR-Honda.
With Honda about to open its new UK racing facility in Milton Keynes (below) it is hard to imagine that the engineers in Tochigi (themselves with a new facility) will not want to get involved in developing the whole car again and not just the power unit. How well this will be received at McLaren is another question.

The rumours are true: in 2018 we'll be competing as Aston Martin Red Bull Racing.
Today we're announcing Aston Martin as our title partner from the 2018 season. We've been working with the world famous sportscar maker for 18 months and this is the logical next step in strengthening our relationship.

The relationship between Aston Martin and The Team began in 2016 after the two companies combined cutting edge F1 technology and Aston Martin's signature sports car design to produce a ground breaking hypercar. The Aston Martin Valkyrie is set to be the first in a line of new products to be borne of this Innovation Partnership and will make its first run in 2018 before being delivered to customers in 2019.
Aston Martin will feature prominently across the Aston Martin Red Bull Racing team from the start of the 2018 season.

Em Singapura, o Vettel jogou a dobradinha fora e deixou o Hamilton ganhar. Já na Malásia não qualifica e tem largar em último. O kimi nem largou porque o turbo deu problema. O Vettel escala o pelotão e chega em quarto, mas depois da bandeirada é acertado pelo Stroll. Agora pode ter danificado o câmbio e tomar punição em Suzuka.
A sorte do Vettel é que a Mercedes tá andando nada. Sofreu em Singapura e na Malásia. O Hamilton está levando o carro nas costas. O que não é caso do Bottas que está ladeira abaixo. Ainda assim, apesar da vantagem do Hamilton, o Vettel só precisa ganhar as corridas cinco corridas que é campeão. Além disso, o fator externo Redbull pode ajudar um ou outro ao se coloca no meio.

It’s been a turbulent couple of weeks for Toro Rosso team principal Franz Tost. First the news that the Italian squad are switching to Honda power next season – and losing star driver Carlos Sainz in the process. Then the decision to replace Daniil Kvyat with Red Bull rookie Pierre Gasly for the ‘next Grands Prix’. We sat down for an exclusive chat in Malaysia to quiz Tost on the logic behind – and potential benefits of – all the changes…
Q: Franz, no team is likely to face more upheaval than Toro Rosso in 2018 - new drivers and a new engine (again)! Can we start with the power unit? Talk us through the events that led to the Toro Rosso-Honda deal…
Franz Tost: That is easy: the partnership with McLaren and Honda was a bit difficult in the past, as both parties has made public. We knew that McLaren wanted another partner, so we started negotiating with Honda and in the end we found an agreement for the next three years.

Q: Is it a done deal, the three years?
FT: Yes it is.
Q: McLaren definitely wanted to part with Honda for obvious reasons. Where do you see the beauty of your deal?
FT: The beauty is that we expect a successful cooperation with Honda, because otherwise we would not have done the deal. I am convinced that Honda will sort out all technical topics – and I am also convinced that the engine is already much better than many people think because McLaren is quite close to us – unfortunately – and sometimes even faster than us. So I am sure that this cooperation will be successful.
Q: McLaren’s racing director Eric Boullier said that he believes Honda will produce a successful power train in the future, but that he cannot wait that long. Can you?
FT: The question is about what time frame we are talking. I do expect that already next year Honda will come up with a competitive package.
Q: It has seemed in the last couple of races that Honda have caught up somewhat. Could it be that you will harvest the fruits of McLaren’s labour?
FT: If so, fine! (Laughs) Why not? We are open and flexible! And don’t forget, for Toro Rosso the co-operation with Honda means a 100 percent step forward. At Renault we are the third team and at Honda we are their only team, so we expect to get out a lot on the design side as well as from the cooperation. So once again: for us this deal means a big step forward.
Q: What about the gearbox situation? This was one of the reasons Sauber called off their planned Honda deal – because they didn’t want to get caught in a situation where McLaren no longer runs a Honda engine but would build the gearbox for a Honda customer?
FT: Ha, a clear plus on our side: we produce our own gearbox. Therefore it is totally easy for us. That is Toro Rosso – we are flexible!
Q: Could it be that Toro Rosso will be the ‘guinea pig’ next season ahead of a possible Red Bull Racing-Honda partnership in 2019?
FT: For that you have to speak with Red Bull Racing. We only know that we have a three-year contract.
Q: In recent seasons Toro Rosso have switched back and forth between an Italian engine supplier – Ferrari – and a French one – Renault. Now you are moving from a French one to a Japanese one. How do you cope with so many changes – both technical and cultural? Surely stability would be better?
FT: It shows first and foremost how flexible we are. We are used to this, so it’s easy for us. Nothing can shock us. Imagine, the last change from Ferrari to Renault was 10 months ago! (Laughs) But now it is Japanese in – and that will stay for the next three years. I also see the benefit of having a certain degree of stability, but that comes from within the team. [Technical director] James Key and his group of engineers are the source of stability and this is where we get our strength from. And we’ve shown that we are capable of fighting with teams that have much more stability than we ever had. With all the changes that we always have to cope with, we have always been in a position to finish the car in time for the first test – and that is paramount. But then again, it is not a ‘must’ to change during the season. (Laughs) Regarding our new Japanese partners, the good news is that I have lived in Japan for a year so I am aware of the difficulties that might arise in communication and we are already working on this matter.

Teria Vettel batido de propósito em Sepang? Há quem diga que sim
A polêmica sobre o acidente entre Lance Stroll, da Williams, e Sebastian Vettel, da Ferrari, após a bandeirada final no GP da Malásia ganhou mais um capítulo. Segundo a revista alemã Auto Motor und Sport, alegadamente, Vettel teria provocado propositalmente a colisão porque a Ferrari teria feito mal as contas do combustível colocado no carro do alemão, a fim de que o carro estivesse o mais leve possível durante a corrida e que Vettel pudesse tirar partido desse benefício.
Com essa arriscada decisão, Vettel contava com a chuva ou um safety car na pista, fato que o faria economizar combustível e ter amostra de combustível suficiente para inspeção. A publicação alemã informou que Vettel não tinha essa amostra e, devido a isso, poderia ter sido desclassificado.
Diante dessa situação indesejada ou ver seu carro ficar parado na pista na sequência de um acidente, a decisão teria sido fácil e rápida de se tomar. Se é verdade ou não, talvez nunca saberemos, mas o único fato que pode dar alguma pista sobre a verdadeira causa vem do rádio do engenheiro de Vettel, há algumas voltas antes do fim da corrida e que pedia para o alemão atacar naquela altura. Pensou-se que isso seria pelo fato dos seus pneus perderem competitividade, mas da ameaça a Ricciardo iminente, Vettel perdeu bastante do seu ritmo e terminou a prova a 15s do australiano. Aí fica a dúvida: falta de combustível ou problema com seus pneus?
De certo, mesmo, é que o choque com Stroll foi violento e poderia ter levado à uma penalização, mas como não foi determinado um culpado, julgou-se que o incidente marcou um momento de distração grande entre o canadense e o alemão.
