Boeing opted for a podded solution to save money. "Originally, we considered integrating the IRST into the aircraft fuselage, on the upper nose, or on the gunbay doors, but these solutions required significant structural, electrical and cooling system modifications and, in both cases, called for relocating existing antennas," says Chris D. Wedewer, Boeing's F/A-18E/F IRST program manager. "We also investigated the possibility of putting an IRST pod on the right fuselage station, opposite the fuselage-mounted Raytheon [Advanced Targeting Forward-Looking Infrared] targeting pod, but this option came with too many operational limitations in terms of field of view," in particular when weapons are being carried, he adds.

Those limitations drove the decision to place the sensor on the centerline weapon station, traditionally the spot for the fuel tank. Since a fuel tank has already been cleared for that station, using such a device to house the IRST was seen as the next logical step. The IRST will also function as a fuel tank, with a part of a pod still able to accommodate 330 gal., Wedewer notes.

Não é possível não existir algum outro lugar para instalar o IRST? Pow, a USN é a pioneira no uso de IRST nos EUA. O F-8 Crusader tinha, o F-14 Tomcat também... conhecimento os caras tem.

Leva combustível, bagagem do piloto, bibelôs das viagens internacionais, equipamento de vigilância baseado numa câmera Tekpix dividida em 120 prestações com leves juros ao dia.....Ah!!! E ainda faz café e serve de máquina de cachorro quente quando pousado em feiras aeronáuticas pelo mundo.

Esse é o problema básico de se ter baseado o F-18E, num projeto de terceira geração do F-18.

Por isso o apelido carinhoso de caça frankestine , toda a seção dianteira da fuselagem é do F-18C, assim, o canhão é colocado no bico do caça, limitando qualquer modificação maior, o canhão M-61 fica localizado acima do radar, com todos os incovenientes de vibração, fumaça, etc... No seu disparo, além de não deixar espaço para nenhuma outro sensor. Quer dizer projeto novo que carrega as limitações de um projeto já antigo. Ao que parece se conseguiu o pior dos mundos, não se fez algo consistentemente superior, e herdou-se muitas das limitações do projeto anterior.

Lembre-se nem o projeto do F-15 e F-16 possuem mais canhões no bico do caça. Projeto que se mostraram mais flexíveis ao crescimento que os F-18, porém, nunca tiveram uma versão naval.

E mais um coisa, ele não deve ser computado no custo fly away do caça, quer dizer mais custos adicionais separados no pacote.

Drop Tank IRST Tests Well For Supers

The idea a few years ago of sticking an infra-red detector into the nose of a drop tank and putting it on the centerline of a Super Hornet for passive air-to-air detection and target aquisition was a penny pinching "low risk" approach. It looks like it will work.
The Super Hornet can be out run by just about every fighter designed since the 1960's, however the flying safety built into the design along with the amazing avionics (including avionics fusion) of the Block II, will mean this aircraft will be a strong player and a safe alternate to risky designs like the F-35. ST. LOUIS, March 11, 2009 -- The Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet Infrared Search and Track (IRST) program has successfully completed a series of risk-reduction flight tests that demonstrated the compatibility and effectiveness of the IRST system on the Super Hornet strike fighter.

IRST is a passive, long-range sensor system that searches for and detects IR emissions within its field of view. It can track several targets simultaneously and provide an effective air-to-air targeting capability, even when facing advanced threats equipped with radar-jamming technology.

Boeing, Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control, and General Electric developed a prototype IRST sensor that was installed in the front section of a modified 480-gallon fuel tank. The U.S. Navy conducted six flight tests at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Md., and four at Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake, Calif.

Chris Wedewer, F/A-18E/F IRST program manager for Boeing, said the flight tests allow for low-risk entry into the development phase of the program. "Boeing and Lockheed Martin successfully demonstrated transfer alignment, long-range target detection, and the ability to operate in a fuel tank," Wedewer said. "Boeing also demonstrated integration of the IRST into the F/A-18E/F's multisource integration algorithms, allowing for the fusion of IRST tracking data with data from other sensors."

Wedewer added that the demonstration ensures effective and efficient progress as the IRST program moves into development and production.

IRST is part of the Navy's F/A-18E/F Block II Super Hornet Flight Plan, which is a series of planned capability enhancements that ensures the Super Hornet will continue to outdistance known and emerging threats over the coming decades.

The Block II F/A-18E/F Super Hornet is a multirole aircraft able to perform virtually every mission in the tactical spectrum, including air superiority, day/night strike with precision-guided weapons, fighter escort, close air support, suppression of enemy air defenses, maritime strike, reconnaissance, forward air control and tanker missions. Equipped with the APG-79 Active Electronically Scanned Array radar, the F/A-18E/F seamlessly conducts simultaneous air and ground missions.
