Venezuelan Navy revives plans to acquire assault ships
José Higuera JDW Correspondent
Santiago
The Venezuelan Navy has reactivated studies for the acquisition of large amphibious assault ships of the landing platform dock (LPD) type, sources in Caracas have told Jane's .
The studies, which were first launched in the 1990s, call for LPD vessels that can carry and deliver around 750 troops with combat and support equipment and vehicles. The LPDs are also expected to fulfil requirements to operate in civilian support and disaster-relief operations.
According to defence sources, there have been talks with shipbuilders such as Italy's Fincantieri, France's DCN and Spain's Navantia, but other suppliers were also being explored.
The Venezuelan Navy is also undertaking a long-planned refit and upgrade programme for its Capana-class LST (landing ship tank) vessels.
LST T-61 Capana , the lead ship of four ordered from Korea in the 1980s, underwent hull, propulsion and machinery refit works at the Caribbean Drydock shipyard in Havana, Cuba, during the first half of 2008.
The sources said the ship's control, navigation and communication systems were later upgraded at the DIANCA shipyard in Puerto Cabello, and her sister ships were being prepared to go through the same process.
The LPDs and the refitted LSTs are required to increase the power projection potential of Venezuelan Navy's 1st Marine Brigade, which is focused on amphibious assault operations and is currently being reorganised as part of the navy's Marine Corps expansion to divisional level.
In addition new weapons are being received, including an unspecified number of Saab Dynamics RBS-70 surface-to-air missiles, allowing for the activation of an air-defence group in the brigade.
The acquisition of new tracked and wheeled armoured vehicles and medium transport helicopters is also under consideration.
