The specialized MH-53E mine-sweeper is assigned to U.S. Navy Helicopter Mine Countermeasures (HM) squadrons. Outfitted with enlarged fuel sponsons, the MH-53E provides long-range fleet support, and can tirelessly plumb the world's strategic waterways, detecting every known type of mine.
Sea Dragon is equipped with the latest mine-sweeping systems, and served with distinction in the Persian Gulf, using mechanical, magnetic and acoustic sweep gear and minehunting sonar to clear vital shipping lanes.
The S-80™ helicopter international variant of the MH-53E is in service with the Japan Defense Agency.
Sikorsky Heavy Lift Helicopters
Sikorsky H-53 Series heavy lift helicopters combine power and versatility like nothing else in the sky. They are home in searing desert heat, arctic cold, and everything in between.
Flying a range of missions including heavy-lift operations, military transport, search and rescue, vertical replenishment, vertical onboard delivery, airborne mine countermeasures, advanced early warning, minesweeping, humanitarian aid and disaster relief.
Powered by three 4,380 shp General Electric T64-GE-416 engines, the CH-53E SUPER STALLION™ and MH-53E SEA DRAGON™ helicopters can carry 16 tons of supplies, cargo, vehicles, artillery, and troops for 500 nautical miles.
They operate at cruise speeds of 170 knots, and with air-to-air refueling, H-53E Series helicopters have unlimited range.
The all-new CH-53K helicopter, the United States Marine Corps Heavy Lift Replacement Helicopter will continue the H-53 legacy. Replacing the current inventory of CH-53E helicopters, the CH-53K is scheduled to achieve its Initial Operating Capability (IOC) in 2015.
