Right-wing opposition pressure on Austrian government likely to remain high despite pro-EU candidate's victory in presidential election
IHS Jane's Country Risk Daily Report
05 December 2016
EVENT
On 4 December, independent, liberal, and pro-European Union candidate Alexander van der Bellen, former leader of the Green Party, won the repeat second round of the Austrian presidential election with around 51.7% of the votes.
Although the exact final result has not been announced yet, it is clear that van der Bellen was able to increase his lead over opponent Norbert Hofer from the right-wing, anti-immigration, and eurosceptic Austrian Freedom Party (Freiheitliche Partei Österreichs: FPÖ) since the original May election, which was overturned by Austria's constitutional court because of procedural flaws.
The Austrian president has a largely ceremonial role, but the prolonged election campaign has featured prominently in Austrian domestic politics and Hofer's strong showing served as an indicator of growing right-wing support ahead of the general election in the Netherlands, France, and Germany next year.
