Launch ceremony of Yasen-M class SSGN 'Novosibirsk'. United Shipbuilding Corporation picture

Yasen-M class SSGN ‘Novosibirsk’ launched by Sevmash Shipyard

Sevmash Shipyard held a ceremony to float the Novosibirsk K-573 first serial SSGN of Yasen-M-class project 885M on December 25, 2019.

TASS Russian news agency

“The Novosibirsk was laid on July 26, 2013. It is built by an upgraded project with new element base of the electronic equipment and Russian-made materials. At the current rate of scientific progress, electronic equipment becomes outdated in 4-5 years. The submarine uses digital computing means designed by the Integration-SVT state program,”

Sevmash Shipyard

Sevmash acting CEO Sergey Voronko said it was a major event and expressed hope that the construction of the submarine and all trials will be completed successfully in 2020.

Russian Navy Commander-in-Chief Nikolai Yevmenov said “strategic and multirole submarines embodied the best scientific achievements of the domestic shipbuilding.”

Head of Belomorskaya naval base Konstantin Kabantsov said the Novosibirsk is a modern submarine with high combat capabilities.

The Russian Navy currently operates one SSGN of Yasen-class. It is the Severodvinsk K-560. It became operational on July 17, 2014. The Kazan K-561 SSGM of project 885M was floated on March 31, 2017 and is to join the Navy in late 2020. Both submarines were built for the Northern fleet. The Novosibirsk is to operate in the Pacific fleet.

Sevmash is building four SSGN of project 885M — the Krasnoyarsk, the Arkhangelsk, the Perm and the Ulyanovsk. In 2019, a contract for another two submarines was signed. They are to be laid on May 9, 2020.

Fourth-generation SSGN of project 885 and 885M have a displacement of 13800 tons. They can submerge to 600 meters and develop underwater speed of 30 knots. The light hull covers only a part of the solid hull in the bow to decrease the signature. For the first time the torpedo launchers are located behind the central compartment instead of the bow. The submarines are armed with Onix and Kalibr missiles, as well as torpedoes.

New Project 12700 minesweeper delivered to Russian Navy

The Sredne-Nevsky Shipyard, part of the United Shipbuilding Corporation, has handed over to the Russian Navy the newest Project 12700 Aleksandrit-class minesweeper Vladimir Yemelyanov.

The flag raising ceremony for the newbuilding took place in Baltiysk, the main base of the Baltic Fleet in the Kaliningrad region, on December 28, 2019.

Vladimir Yemelyanov is the third ship of Project 12700 built at the abovementioned shipyard for the navy.

In 2016, Sredne-Nevsky delivered the lead ship of the class, the minesweeper Alexander Obukhov. In January 2019, the Alexandrit-class vessel Ivan Antonov was commissioned.

Project 12700 minesweepers have the largest fiberglass body in the world, according to the Russian defense ministry. A monolithic-fiberglass hull provides for greater survivability during mine countermeasure operations and weighs less than a low-magnetic steel hull.

With a displacement of 890 tons, the Project 12700 minesweepers feature a length of 62 meters and a width of 10 meters.

The ships of this class are designed to provide mine protection of naval bases, coastal sea areas, detect and destroy mines, provide mine protection for ships in transit, exclusive economic zone and mineral deposits at sea, carry out mine reconnaissance, lay minefields. During low mine threat periods, the ships can be used both for protection of a water area and training purposes.

The Russian Navy plans to build a total of 40 Project 12700 mine countermeasures vessels.

Scale models of the next-generation Project 585 (Laika-class) nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine (SSBN) under development for the Russian Navy and several updated surface combatants were unveiled during a recent Ministry of Defence board meeting in Moscow. Footage of the scale models was shown by Russian television broadcaster Channel One on 24 December 2019.

In April 2019 a defence industry source told news agency TASS that the Malachite Design Bureau in St Petersburg had launched research and development (R&D) work for the creation of a fifth-generation SSBN under the codename Laika, following the completion of preliminary design work the previous year.

At the time, the source did not detail the submarine specifications, saying only that "the Tsirkon hypersonic missile will be among the ship's strike weapons" and "the submarine will feature modular structure and a joint integrated combat management system with artificial intelligence".

According to the scale model recently displayed, the Project 585 submarine has a displacement of 11,340 tonnes, a maximum submerged depth of 600 m, can attain a speed of 35 kt, and has an endurance of 90 days.

The armament suite will incorporate Kalibr cruise missiles (including the land-attack 3M-14 variant), 3M-22 Tsirkon (or Zircon) hypersonic anti-ship missiles, P-800 Oniks (3M-55) anti-ship missiles, 91RU Otvet anti-submarine guided missiles, Khishchnik anti-submarine missiles (according to the open sources, a high-speed torpedo is being developed under this programme), Fizik-1 and USET-80 torpedoes, the Lasta anti-torpedo weapon, PMR-2 rocket-propelled mines, MTPK-1 mine-torpedoes, and surface-to-air missiles for the Igla man-portable air defence system.

Several scale models of surface combatants, including the upgraded Project 11442M (Kirov-class) cruiser, the Project 23550 ice-class patrol ship with the Kalibr missiles, and the updated Project 22800 (Karakurt-class) guided-missile corvette with an increased number of 3S-14 vertical launch systems (VLSs), were also on display.
