AP sources: US to sell F-15s to Saudi Arabia

WASHINGTON (AP) -- U.S. officials say the Obama administration is poised to announce the sale of nearly $30 billion worth of F-15 fighter jets to Saudi Arabia.

Officials say the deal will send 84 new fighter jets and upgrades for 70 more, for a total of $29.4 billion.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the sale has not been made public.

About a year ago, the administration got the go-ahead from Congress for a 10-year, $60 billion arms deal with Saudi Arabia that included F-15s, helicopters and a broad array of missiles, bombs and delivery systems, as well as radar warning systems and night-vision goggles.

The plan raised concerns particularly from pro-Israeli lawmakers, but U.S. officials reassured Congress that Israel's military edge would not be undercut by the sale.

Elbit Systems Awarded Approximately $50 Million Contract to Supply Hermes 900® UAS to a Governmental Office of a Country in the Americas

Elbit Systems Ltd. (NASDAQ and TASE: ESLT, ("Elbit Systems") announced today that it was awarded a contract, valued at approximately $50 million, to supply Hermes 900® Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) to a governmental office of a country in the Americas. The UAS will be operated in a variety of perimeter security missions. The project will be performed over approximately one year. The UAS will also include systems such as the Universal Ground Control Stations (UGCS), Elbit Systems Electro-Optics Elop's highly advanced DCoMPASS™ payload systems, as well as satellite communication systems.

The Hermes® 900 UAS builds on the vast operational experience accumulated by the Hermes® 450, the backbone of the Israel Defense Forces' UAS operations. Hermes® 900 offers a range of enhanced capabilities, from higher flight altitude (up to 30,000 ft) to longer endurance and larger payload capacity. The system's unique structure enables it to carry a variety of payloads in different shapes and sizes for quick "conversion" between payload configurations.

WASHINGTON, 29 dez 2011 (AFP) -A venda de 84 caças F-15 americanos à Arábia Saudita envia uma "forte mensagem" à região, a de que Washington está comprometido com a segurança no Golfo, no momento em que o Irã ameaça fechar o estreito de Ormuz, disse nesta quinta-feira Andrew Shapiro, um funcionário de alto escalão do Departamento de Estado americano.

A transação, anunciada pela manhã, "vai melhorar a capacidade de dissuasão da Arábia Saudita e de defesa contra ameaças externas à sua soberania", declarou.

"Os Estados Unidos e a Arábia Saudita assinaram um contrato (...) de fornecimento de aviões de combate avançado F-15SA à Força Aérea Real Saudita", confirmou, depois, um dos porta-vozes de Barack Obama, Ernesto Josh, no Havaí (Pacífico), onde o presidente americano passa as festas de final de ano.

Os termos da venda já haviam sido apresentados ao Congresso no final de 2010, e não houve objeções.

"O contrato, de 29,4 bilhões de dólares, prevê a produção de 84 novos aviões e a modernização de outros 70" F-15 já utilizados por Riad, disse Josh em comunicado, elogiando as consequências "positivas" do acordo para a economia americana, inclusive com a criação de "50.000 postos de trabalho" permanentes nos Estados Unidos.

Coincidência ou não, o anúncio foi feito num momento en que cresce a tensão entre o Irã, adversário regional da Arábia Saudita na produção de petróleo, e os Estados Unidos, aliados de Riad, um de seus principais fornecedores.

Teerã fez alusão, nos últimos dias, à sua capacidade de fechar o estreito de Ormuz, por onde transitam entre um terço e 40% do comércio de petróleo mundial, em caso de novas sanções internacionais contra o país, por seu controvertido programa nuclear.
