Russia’s nuclear-powered missile cruiser Pyotr Veliky to start undergoing upgrade after 2018
Work to repair and upgrade Russia’s Project 11442 heavy nuclear-powered missile cruiser Pyotr Veliky to the Project 11442M level will start after 2018, Vice-President for Warship Construction at Russia’s United Shipbuilding Corporation Igor Ponomaryov said.
"The Project 11442 missile cruiser Admiral Nakhimov is being repaired and upgraded at the Sevmash Shipyard [in Severodvinsk in north Russia] in accordance with the schedule," Ponomaryov said.
"After the work on the ship Admiral Nakhimov is completed, we will be able to start upgrading the Project 11442 cruiser Pyotr Veliky," he added.
It was reported earlier that the work to repair the cruiser Admiral Nakhimov and equip it with the Kalibr (NATO reporting name: SS-N-27 Sizzler) missile system would be completed in 2018. The Project 11442 heavy nuclear-powered missile cruiser Pyotr Veliky is designed to eliminate key surface targets, attack coastal targets and provide air defense for a ship formation. The Project 11442 missile cruiser is armed with the AK-130 130mm artillery gun, air defense missile complexes, Kortik (CADS-N-1 Kashtan) antiaircraft missile/gun systems and the Vodopad (SS-N-16 Stallion) antisubmarine missile system.
The Project 11442 missile cruiser Pyotr Veliky was put afloat in 1989 and joined the Russian Navy in 1998.
The Project 11442 missile cruiser has a displacement of 24,500 tons, a length of 251 meters, a full capacity of 140,000 hp and a speed of 31 knots. The cruiser’s crew totals 728. The cruiser can carry the Kamov Ka-27 (Helix) helicopter or its versions.

Russia’s USC can build several Project 23560 Leader-class Nuclear-Powered Destroyers
Russia’s United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) has all the potential to build several Project 23560 Leader-class destroyers simultaneously, USC Vice-President for Warship Construction Igor Ponomaryov said.
Scale model showing the Project 23560E "Shkval-class" Destroyer (export variant of Leader-class) at Army 2016 exhibition. Twelve ships of the 10,000t "Leader class" are planned to enter service from 2023-25, split between the Northern and Pacific Fleets. They will all be nuclear powered. They will be fitted with the ABM-capable S-500 SAM and Kalibr (SS-N-27) cruise missile.
"The information about when the construction work will begin will be available after the engineering design of the ship is worked out," Ponomaryov said.
"The United Shipbuilding Corporation has all the potential to build several ships of this type simultaneously," he added.
A source in the Russian defense and industrial sector told TASS earlier that the Defense Ministry was planning to order eight Project 23560 destroyers and the construction of the first vessel of this type was expected to start in 2018.
The future Project 23560 Leader-class destroyer is expected to replace the Project 956 and 1155 ships that make up the mainstay of the Navy’s general-purpose ocean-operating forces.
The Project 23560 destroyer will have a nuclear propulsion unit. The destroyer will be also armed with the Kalibr (NATO reporting name: SS-N-27 Sizzler) and Oniks (SS-N-26 Strobile) missile systems or their versions and a shipborne version of the S-500 air defense missile system able to provide antiballistic missile defense.
