Re: Carros: marcas, nacionalidade, qualidades e defeitos
Turbodiesel não é oferecido para carros de linha no Brasil, infelizmente. Tinha vontade de pilotar um turbodiesel avançado, deve ser interessante, um tremendo torque nas saídas de curva ...

Re: Carros: marcas, nacionalidade, qualidades e defeitos

Fascinating article from Newsweek. Not long, but it touches on quality, design, economics, war, and more. As an aside, I wonder if any of the Taliban/Al-Qaeda/Somalian fighters have experience the unintended acceleration problem? I'm guessing not.
Why Rebel Groups Love the Toyota Hilux - Newsweek: "Why rebels and insurgent groups the world over love the Toyota Hilux pickup as much as their AK-47s. As the war in Afghanistan escalated several years ago, counterinsurgency expert David Kilcullen, a member of the team that designed the Iraq surge for Gen. David Petraeus, began to notice a new tattoo on some insurgent Afghan fighters. It wasn’t a Taliban tattoo. It wasn’t even Afghan. It was a Canadian maple leaf. When a perplexed Kilcullen began to investigate, he says, he discovered that the incongruous flags were linked to what he says is one of the most important, and unnoticed, weapons of guerrilla war in Afghanistan and across the world: the lightweight, virtually indestructible Toyota Hilux truck."

A toyota sempre fez carros extremamente robustos. Só borraram a pintura com os aceleradores "fly by wire" O yaris antigo foi considerado o carro mais fiável por várias publicações.
Por algum motivo as toyota hiace são roubadas para exportar para África. Tem uma robustez enorme.

Chrysler starting to name Fiat dealers for the US
Chrysler Group starting to name some Fiat dealers for the US; wants them in 119 US markets
On Wednesday October 20, 2010, 6:48 am
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) -- Chrysler Group LLC is starting to name Fiat dealers for the U.S.
The automaker said Wednesday that it wants Fiat dealers in 119 U.S. markets -- mostly in areas that have a high number of small-car registrations -- and will name more dealers by year's end.
Chrysler, which is now controlled by Italy's Fiat, previously said it hoped to have 165 Fiat stores in the U.S. by early 2011, with the ultimate goal of having 200 locations.
The company wants the Fiat 500 minicar to become a strong contender in the U.S. small-car market, where the Detroit automaker has struggled for years.
Some Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep dealers chosen will build new facilities while others will convert buildings into dealerships. Chrysler said it has also received Fiat proposals from dealers outside the company and is now reviewing their bids.
Chrysler said dealers will be ready to take orders for the Fiat 500. The company has said dealers would start selling the minicar in December, and is looking to sell 50,000 of the 500s in the first year. It will eventually be sold as a convertible and electric car, and larger vehicles from Italy's Lancia brand may come later.
Last month Chrysler said it would use Ally Financial Inc. as its preferred lender once it starts selling the Fiats. Ally Financial, formerly called GMAC, is already the main lender for Chrysler dealers and customers.

Toyota recalling 1.53 million cars globally
By MALCOLM FOSTER, Associated Press Writer Malcolm Foster, Associated Press Writer 27 mins ago
TOKYO – Toyota is recalling 1.53 million Lexus, Avalon and other models, mostly in the U.S. and Japan, for brake fluid and fuel pump problems, the latest in a string of quality lapses for the world's No. 1 automaker.
Toyota Motor Corp. said Thursday it will call back for repairs about 740,000 cars in the U.S. and 599,000 in Japan. The remainder are in Europe and other markets around the world.
Over the past year, Toyota has recalled more than 10 million cars and trucks worldwide for a variety of problems, from faulty gas pedals and floor mats that can trap accelerators, to braking problems in its Prius hybrid. In August, Toyota recalled 1.33 million Corolla sedans and Matrix hatchbacks in the U.S. and Canada because their engines may stall.
The majority of vehicles this time around need to be fixed for a problem with the brake master cylinder which could lead to weaker braking power, said spokesman Paul Nolasco in Tokyo. Some models in Japan and elsewhere — but not in North America — have an electrical problem with the fuel pump which could cause the engine to stall, he said.
No accidents have been reported from the two defects, he said.
Nolasco said the recall decision was made under Toyota's new quality control regime instituted over the last several months in response to criticism that the company was slow in dealing with the slew of safety problems earlier this year.
The automaker has been working to overhaul its quality controls and respond more aggressively to customer complaints in the fallout from its recall crisis. Changes include naming a chief quality officer to head up regional quality control teams that have more autonomy and can contribute directly to decisions on whether recalls are required.
Toyota received initial complaints about both problems from customers in Japan five years ago, but that didn't mean there was documentation of a pattern that would trigger a recall, Nolasco said. He said he did not have information on how the issue was handled since then, and other company officials were not immediately available.
"It takes a while to compile the evidence for a recall," Nolasco said. Once the evidence pointed to a need for a recall, the company moved immediately to announce one, he said.
Analysts said the recall decision, coming just two months after the Corolla and Matrix recall, seems to suggest that Toyota is trying to be more forthcoming about safety issues. American regulators hit Toyota with a $16.4 million fine for failing to promptly tell the government about its car defects.
"Toyota's image suffered because it was slow and so it is trying to be quick with its response," said Ryuichi Saito, auto analyst with Mizuho Investors Securities in Tokyo.
The models affected by the latest recall in the U.S. include the 2005 and 2006 Avalon, 2004 through 2006 non-hybrid Highlander and Lexus RX330, and 2006 Lexus GS300, IS250, and IS350 vehicles, the company said in a statement from its U.S. headquarters in Torrance, California.
It said a small amount of the brake fluid could slowly leak from the brake master cylinder, resulting in illumination of the brake warning lamp.
Transportation Department spokeswoman Olivia Alair said Toyota informed the government of the recall Wednesday evening.
Toyota will notify owners around the world by mail to come for repairs at no charge, Nolasco said.
The models affected in Japan include the Crown, Crown Majesta, Harrier, Mark X, Alphard, Kluger, Lexus GS350, Lexus IS250, and Lexus IS350. The production date of the models ranges from May 2002 to November 2005.
Two models in Japan — the Lexus GS350 and the Crown — are affected by both problems.
In Japan, Toyota's image has taken less of a beating. And despite the safety woes, the Prius has been Japan's top-selling model this year.
From January through August, Toyota sold 5.6 million vehicles globally, up 13 percent from a year earlier.
