Russia orders new Project 23550 Arctic corvettes
Nicholas de Larrinaga, London - IH

Concept image issued by the Russian Ministry of Defence of the Project 23550 ice-class patrol ships for the Russian Navy. Source: Russian MoD
Russia has ordered two Project 23550 ice-class armed patrol boats, the Russian Ministry of Defence (MoD) has announced.
The class is described (in Russian) by the MoD as being "without analogues in the world", and combining "the qualities of tug, ice-breaker, and patrol boat".
The two vessels ordered will be built by Admiralty Shipyards in St Petersburg and are scheduled to be delivered to the Russian Navy by 2020.
The MoD specifies the Project 23550 class as being able to break ice up to 1.5 m thick. A concept image released by the MoD showed the vessel armed with a medium-calibre main gun on the foredeck (likely an A-190 100 mm naval gun), a helicopter deck and hangar, and two aft payload bays each fitted with a containerised missile launch system (akin to the Club-K system offered for export) armed with four erectable launch tubes - presumably for either Club anti-ship or Kalibr-NK land-attack missiles. Although billed as patrol boats, this level of armament makes them better armed than many corvettes.

Russian Navy First Project 11356M Grigorovich class Frigate heads for Permanent Base in Crimea
The Project 11356 frigate Admiral Grigorovich will leave the naval base in Baltiysk in west Russia to head for its home station in Sevastopol in Crimea, Defense Ministry spokesman for the Navy Igor Dygalo said on Friday.

On Thursday, the Russian Navy’s commission headed by Navy Deputy Commander-in-Chief Vice-Admiral Alexander Fedotenkov checked the ship’s readiness for the inter-fleet passage. "On order of Russian Navy Commander-in-Chief Admiral Vladimir Korolyov, we checked the training level of the ship’s crew and the readiness of its equipment for the inter-fleet passage," Fedotenkov said. "The frigate is ready to perform the inter-fleet passage to its Black Sea Fleet permanent base," he added.
The frigate Admiral Grigorovich is planned to arrive at the Black Sea Fleet’s main naval base in Sevastopol in late May.
The frigate Admiral Grigorovich is the first out of six ships designed for Russia’s Black Sea Fleet. It was laid down in late 2010 and put afloat in the spring of 2014.
The frigates in the class displace 4,000 tons, sail at 30 knots, have an endurance of 30 days and carry the Kalibr missile system with 3M-14, 3M-54 and other precision-guided missiles (the bow-mounted 3S-14 vertical launch system houses eight missiles), Uragan-1 (SA-N-7 Gadfly) multiple-target engagement-capable air defense missile system (3x12 VLS’s, 24 missiles) and Kortik (SA-N-11 Grison) air defense missile/gun system (two combat modules, 2x4 SAM launchers, 32 missiles and 2x6 30-mm antiaircraft guns.

Russia starts naval shipbuilding in Crimea
Nikolai Novichkov, Moscow - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly
11 May 2016
Russia has begun building its first naval vessel in Crimea since it occupied the territory from Ukraine. The Project 22800 (Karakurt-class) guided missile corvette was laid down on 10 May by the More Shipyard in Feodosiya.
"Today, we are laying the keel of the advanced ship Shtorm ... this proves that the shipyard has managed to integrate with Russia's defence industry quickly enough. The company is prepared to fulfil the order," industry and trade minister Denis Manturov said at the keel laying ceremony.
The Project 22800 class is being built to replace the Admiral Grigorovich-class (Project 11356) frigate building programme, the second batch of which was halted by Ukraine refusing to export their engines after Russia seized Crimea from Ukraine.
