Chechen President Buried in Native Village

The president of Chechnya, Akhmad Kadyrov, who was killed in a terrorist attack on May 9, was buried on Monday in his native Chechen village of Tsentoroy.

Thousands of people from different regions of Chechnya gathered to bid farewell to Kadyrov, ITAR-TASS news agency reported. Top officials from the Chechen government and the leaders of other North Caucasus republics attended the funeral.

The head of State Council of Chechnya, Hussein Isayev, was buried on Monday in his native village of Itum-Kaleh. According to the latest official information, 6 people were killed by the blast at the stadium in the Chechen capital of Grozny, including Kadyrov and Isayev. The other victims were an 8-year-old girl, photographer and cameraman of Reuters news agency, Adlan Khassanov, and two members of Kadyrov’s bodyguard. There were reports that one more person died in hospital but they have still not been confirmed officially.

Kadyrov was born in 1951. From 1994 till 1996 he was a member of the separatist forces in Chechnya. In 1995, the president of the Republic of Ichkeria, Dzhokhar Dudayev, appointed him the supreme mufti (top religious leader) of Chechnya. Upon this appointment, Kadyrov declared a holy war (jihad) on Russia. In 1996, he participated in peace talks with Russia and later refused to take part in the second campaign on the side of the rebels.

On June 12, 2000, the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, appointed Kadyrov the head of the provisional administration of Chechnya. On October 5, 2003, he was elected president of the republic. According to official information, he received 80 percent of the vote.
