Yemenia Airlines to Acquire 10 Airbus A320s
(Source: Airbus; issued November 16, 2009)
Yemenia, the official carrier of the state of Yemen, based in Sanaa, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for 10 Airbus A320 Family aircraft. The agreement was signed at the 2009 Dubai Airshow by Saleh Alawaji, Yemenia Member of the board of directors on behalf of Captain Abdulkhalek Al-Kadi, Chairman of Yemenia and John Leahy, Chief Operating Officer, Customers.
Yemenia’s A320s will be configured in a comfortable two-class configuration with seating for 12 passengers in Business Class and 138 in Economy. The aircraft will be deployed to enhance and expand services on regional, African, Indian and European routes. It will enable Yemenia to demonstrate its role as a growing regional carrier and contributor to the growth of Yemen’s economy.
Saleh Alawaji, said: "Our long term strategy is to grow with an integrated fleet of super efficient and reliable aircraft. The A320 shares operational and maintenance commonality with our existing Airbus’, and will bring added efficiencies. The A320 will also offer our passengers the best cabin comfort in its class.”
“We are honoured Yemenia is showing such confidence in our aircraft, and has chosen our products to springboard their ambitious expansion plans. The A320 is today’s standard in the Single-Aisle market and through our continuous innovations we are strengthening the aircraft’s leadership position for the future. The A320 is better by design and still keeps getting better,” said John Leahy. “With its choice, Yemenia will benefit from Airbus’ family concept which highlights eco-efficiency and streamlines maintenance and operations,” he added.
Yemenia’s fleet includes two A330-200s and three A310s. Sanaa and Aden based, Yemenia’s long haul fleet, operate to destinations in Europe, the Middle East and Asia. During the 2007 Dubai airshow, Yemenia placed an order with Airbus for ten Airbus A350 XWB.
The A320 Family, which includes the A318, A319, A320 and A321, is recognized as the benchmark single-aisle aircraft family. Each aircraft features fly by wire controls and all share a unique cockpit and operational commonality across the range. Around 6,400 Airbus A320 Family aircraft have been sold and more than 4,000 delivered to some 300 customers and operators worldwide, making it the world’s best selling commercial jetliner ever. With proven reliability and extended servicing periods, the A320 Family has the lowest operating costs of any single aisle aircraft. Uniquely, the A320 Family offers a containerized cargo system, which is compatible with the worldwide standard wide-body system.

Air Austral Signs Firm Order for Two Single-Class A380s
(Source: Airbus; issued November 17, 2009)
Air Austral, based in Saint Denis, La Réunion, has ordered two A380s, the most advanced, spacious and eco-efficient airliner in service today. Powered by Engine Alliance engines and seating around 840 passengers in a single-class configuration, the aircraft will be operated on the high-density route from La Réunion to Paris, France.
“The A380 will offer the best comfort of any aircraft in a high density configuration. With its spacious and extremely quiet cabins, we'll enter a new era in terms of economic air travel.” said Gérard Ethève, President of Air Austral.
“Air Austral opens a new chapter for A380 operations. It will operate the A380 with the lowest fuel cost and emissions per passenger of any aircraft available today” said John Leahy, Airbus Chief Operating Officer Customers. “The in-service experience has shown just how efficient the A380 really is, and this order from Air Austral demonstrates new ways of benefiting from that efficiency”.
Being greener, cleaner, quieter and smarter, the A380 is already setting new standards for air transport and the environment. In addition to offering unequalled levels of passenger comfort, space and quietness in the cabin, the A380 has unmatched levels of operating costs and fuel efficiency, consuming generally less than three litres per passenger per 100 kilometres. With the Air Austral configuration, fuel consumption levels below two litres per passenger per 100 kilometres can be expected.
The A380 not only complies with today’s noise limits, it is also significantly quieter than any other large aircraft flying today. With a range of 8 200 nm / 15 200 km, and seating 525 passengers in a standard three-class layout while being much more eco-efficient, the A380 is the ideal equipment to alleviate traffic congestion at busy airports, while coping with growth.
20 A380s are in service with four customers, connecting four continents on 13 major international routes. The in-service A380 fleet has accumulated over 82,000 revenue flight hours in over 8,700 commercial flights. Over 3 million passengers have already enjoyed flying the A380.
Orders for the aircraft stand at 202 from 17 customers. (ends)

Boeing, Air Algerie Announce Order for Seven 737-800s at Dubai Airshow 2009
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, Nov. 17 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Boeing (NYSE: BA) and Air Algérie announced an order for seven Next-Generation 737-800s today at Dubai Airshow 2009.
The airplanes will grow the Air Algérie Next-Generation 737 fleet to 22 airplanes. The new airplanes will help the airline leverage the efficiencies of a standard single-aisle fleet that delivers high fuel efficiency and related environmental improvements, said Air Algérie CEO Abdelwahid Bouabdallah.
Air Algérie is based in Algeria's capital, Algiers.
"Our purchase of Boeing 737-800s is a natural progression for Air Algérie," said Bouabdallah. "One advantage is that our pilots and engineers are expertly trained and experienced with the airplane. The 737-800 adds great value to our fleet because it is very high-tech and reliable. Reduced operating and maintenance costs mean our airplanes spend less time on the ground and more time in the air making money."
Air Algérie ordered its new 737s with Blended Winglets, which further reduce fuel burn by approximately four percent.
A Boeing customer for nearly 40 years, Air Algérie operates a Boeing fleet that includes 10 737-800s, five 737-600s and three 767-300s.
"Air Algérie's order reflects our company's solid business partnership of nearly 40 years with the airline and the proven fuel efficiency and reliability of the Next-Generation 737," said Marty Bentrott, Boeing Commercial Airplanes vice president of Sales for the Middle East, Central and South Asia.
Nearly 120 customers around the world have ordered more than 5,000 Next-Generation 737s. Boeing has more than 2,100 unfilled orders for the Next-Generation 737 valued at more than $158 billion at current list prices.
Earlier this year, Boeing announced performance enhancements to the Next-Generation 737 that will reduce fuel consumption by 2 percent by 2011 through a combination of airframe and engine improvements.

Turkish Airlines Orders 2 A330 Freighters
(Source: Airbus; issued November 24, 2009)
Turkish Airlines has signed a firm order for the purchase of two A330-200F freighter aircraft, becoming a new customer for this aircraft type. The aircraft will be powered by Rolls Royce engines and will join Turkish Airlines' existing all Airbus freighter fleet of four Airbus A310s from Autumn 2010.
The aircraft will be used to support Turkish Airlines ambitious growth plans, which include the expansion of its cargo operations.
"The flexibility and efficiency of the A330-200 freighter, together with its commonality with our existing Airbus fleet made the new A330 Freighter the ideal choice for expansion of our cargo operations" said Dr Candan Karlitekin, Chairman of Turkish Airlines.
John Leahy, Airbus Chief Operating Officer, Customers, said "With its low costs and adaptable operational configurations, the A330-200F is the best choice in today's freight market. We have a long history with Turkish Airlines and are pleased that they have chosen the newest member of the Airbus family for their cargo operations."
Turkish Airlines has operated Airbus aircraft since 1985, and currently has a fleet of 67 Airbus aircraft, including four A310s, 47 A320 family aircraft, seven A330s and nine A340s.
Airbus aircraft share a unique cockpit and operational commonality, allowing airlines to use the same pool of pilots, cabin crews and maintenance engineers, bringing operational flexibility and resulting in significant cost savings.
With a greater payload than initially anticipated, the A330-200F offers two operational configurations depending on the planned mission. The aircraft can carry more than 64 metric tonnes over 4,000 nautical miles / 7,400km, or more than 69 metric tonnes up to 3,200 nautical miles / 5,930km - non-stop. These range and payload capabilities will enable operators to grow their business by opening up or extending cargo routes they currently operate.
Thanks to an optimized fuselage cross-section, it has the interior flexibility to carry a wide variety of pallet and container sizes for maximum interlining capability, offering 30 per cent more volume than any freighter in its class.
The A330-200 Freighter made its first flight on 5th November and is on track for certification and deliveries starting in 2010. Total orders for the aircraft stand at 69 from 10 customers less than one month after first flight.
The Airbus Global Market Forecast predicts a need for over 1,600 mid-sized freighters in the next 20 years.

Airbus Final Assembly Line China Achieves 2009 Target
(Source: Airbus; dated Dec. 16, web-posted Dec. 18, 2009)
The Airbus A320 Family Final Assembly Line China (FALC) has achieved its 2009 target as the 11th A320 Family aircraft assembled by the FALC was delivered to Deer Air, an airline part of the HNA Group, on 16th December in Tianjin.
The first A320 assembled by the FALC was delivered to Sichuan Airlines via Dragon Aviation Leasing on 23rd June 2009. Since then, a total of five A320 and five A319 assembled by the FALC have been delivered and are now in operation with Sichuan Airlines, Deer Air, Shenzhen Airlines and China Eastern Airlines.
"We are very proud to have achieved our target in the first year of operation, on schedule and on quality. When we started operations in August 2008, we had two challenges: deliver Airbus quality from Tianjin and ensure a smooth ramp up of production. Both objectives were reached thanks to our Chinese partners' daily commitment as well as Airbus' active support at all levels. The success achieved in FALC is definitely a way forward for the continuous industrial cooperation between Airbus and China," said Laurence Barron, Airbus China President.
"This is a significant step for the development of FALC and is the result of the joint-efforts made by the Chinese and the European partners. FALC is an excellent example of the cooperation between the Chinese aviation industry and the rest of the world. FALC is a driving force for the development of the Aviation Industrial Base in Tianjin," said Zhao Haishan, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Airbus (Tianjin) Final Assembly Company Ltd.
The A320 Family, which includes the A318, A319, A320 and A321, is recognized as the benchmark single-aisle aircraft family. Each aircraft features fly-by-wire controls and all share a unique cockpit and operational commonality across the range. More than 6,400 Airbus A320 Family aircraft have been sold to 221 customers worldwide, making it the world's best-selling commercial jetliner ever. With proven reliability and extended servicing periods, the A320 Family has the lowest operating costs of any single-aisle aircraft. Uniquely, the A320 Family offers a containerized cargo system, which is compatible with the world wide standard wide-body system.
By the end of November 2009, 442 A320 Family aircraft are in operation with 12 operators in China. Chinese airlines have ordered close to 600 A320 Family aircraft in total.
BACKGROUND NOTES:
The Airbus A320 Family Final Assembly Line China (FALC) in Tianjin is the third single-aisle aircraft final assembly line location of Airbus worldwide, after Toulouse and Hamburg. It is also the first Airbus final assembly line outside Europe. Based on the latest state-of-the-art Airbus single-aisle Final Assembly Line in Hamburg, Germany, FALC will assembly A320 and A319 aircraft.
The FALC is a joint venture between Airbus and a Chinese consortium comprising Tianjin Free Trade Zone (TJFTZ) and China Aviation Industry Corporation (AVIC). Airbus and the Chinese Consortium respectively hold 51 per cent and 49 per cent of the shares of the joint venture. FALC started work in August 2008. Eleven A319 and A320 aircraft are scheduled for delivery in Tianjin in 2009 and the FALC production rate will be ramped up to four aircraft per month by the end of 2011.

Airbus leads Boeing after record 2009 plane deliveries
Airbus has said it has made a record amount of deliveries in 2009, beating US rival Boeing.
The planemaker handed over a total of 498 aircraft to customers in 2009, 15 more than in 2008 and ahead of Boeing for the seventh year running.
At the end of 2009, the company had a total order backlog of almost 3,500 aircraft.
That makes an order book worth $437bn (£700bn) - equal to six years of full production.
After adjusting for order cancellations, Airbus sold almost twice as many planes as Boeing in 2009 with net sales of 271 aircraft compared with Boeing's 142.
More delays
But Airbus admitted it was disappointed by a fall in production of its A380, the world's largest airliner, which it said would remain a cost liability for some time to come.
Although A380 output fell in only its second full year of production, Airbus said an internal audit had found ways of making it more efficiently. It promised to step up production.
And another of its star projects, the A400M military plane, is also causing problems.
Airbus chief executive Tom Enders said the company would need a lot more money from its government customers for the overdue and over-budget project to have a chance of succeeding.
Airbus, part of the aerospace group EADS, has been wrestling for years with these two craft, which are two of Europe's largest industrial projects.
Mr Enders, who is also Airbus's president as well as its head, said: "Considering the economic and financial environment we have done rather well in 2009... (but) we are not out of the woods yet."

Airbus Delivers the 30th A380
(Source: Airbus; issued June 4, 2010)
The 30th A380 to be delivered was handed over today to Emirates Airline, one of the launch customers of the Airbus double-decker aircraft. This is the tenth A380 Emirates has received out of its total firm order for 58 aircraft.
This aircraft will be on display at the ILA Berlin Air Show which is taking place from June 8th to 13th. Lufthansa will also bring their recently delivered, first A380 to the show and from June 11th an Airbus flight test A380 will be on static and flying display.
Airbus has already delivered seven A380s so far in 2010, three to Emirates Airline, two to Air France, one to Lufthansa and one to Qantas. Airbus is on track to deliver a total of at least 20 A380s in 2010.
Today five major airlines, Singapore Airlines, Emirates Airline, Qantas, Air France and Lufthansa, operate 30 A380s on 20 routes linking 18 major international destinations. Together they have carried nearly five and a half million passengers on 15,000 revenue flights and have clocked up almost 140,000 revenue flight hours.
These A380 flights have saved 640,000t of CO2 emissions by replacing journeys that would otherwise have been made with less fuel-efficient large aircraft. The A380 has the lowest fuel burn of any wide body aircraft, needing less than three litres of fuel per passenger per 100km.
The A380 is also a proven profit generator. Delivering an impressive double-digit percentage reduction in cash operating costs, it allows airlines to either increase the number of seats offered at little or no extra cost or keep the same capacity at a much lower total cost. This is one of the reasons why seven of the 17 A380 customers have already placed repeat orders and over half the world’s top international carriers have ordered it.
Airbus has received 202 firm orders for the A380 from 17 customers.

Virgin America Set to Acquire 40 More Airbus A320 Aircraft; Airline’s All-Airbus Fleet to Triple in Size
(Source: EADS; issued July 22, 2010)
FARNBOROUGH, UK --- Virgin America and Airbus signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for 40 Airbus A320 aircraft today at the Farnborough International Air Show. The order will triple Virgin America’s fleet going forward. The airline indicated it would announce its choice of engines for the additional aircraft once the purchase agreement is finalized.
“The low operating costs and cabin comfort of the A320 fit our growth plans as well as our guests’ high expectations for comfort, style and efficiency in their travel,” said Virgin America President and CEO David Cush.
"A repeat order from Virgin America – a U.S. airline growing quickly both in terms of their route network and their reputation for excellent service – is a great affirmation of the benefits of operating the A320 Family," said John Leahy, Airbus Chief Operating Officer, Customers. “We are very pleased they have chosen to expand their reach with even more of our aircraft, and we look forward to continuing to support their Airbus fleet."
Virgin America already operates 28 Airbus aircraft (10 A319s and 18 A320s) and will put a total of 22 more purchased and leased A320s into service by the end of 2012. Once finalized, the MoU announced today would expand the Virgin America fleet to a total of 90 Airbus aircraft.
With this MoU, Virgin America may choose the new, fuel-saving “Sharklet” option that is available beginning in late 2012 on A320 aircraft. Sharklets are large wing-tip devices that will enhance the eco-efficiency and payload-range performance of the A320 Family. Offered as a forward-fit option, they are expected to result in at least 3.5 percent reduced fuel burn over longer sectors, corresponding to an annual reduction of around 700 metric tons of carbon dioxide per aircraft. This latest development is part of a larger, continuous-improvement program for the A320 Family.
The A320 Family (A318, A319, A320 and A321) is recognized as the benchmark single-aisle aircraft family. With more than 6,500 aircraft sold, and some 4,300 aircraft delivered to more than 310 customers and operators worldwide, the A320 Family is the world’s best-selling single-aisle aircraft family. ALAFCO Opts for the A350-900; Converts Order from A350-800 to the Higher Capacity -900
(Source: EADS; issued July 21, 2010)
FARNBOROUGH, UK --- ALAFCO, the Kuwait-based international Aviation Lease and Finance Company, has converted its existing firm order for 12 Airbus A350-800’s placed in 2007, into the higher capacity A350 -900 model.
The A350-900 is the first of the three members of the A350 XWB family to be introduced and will enter service in mid 2013. ALAFCO’s main shareholder is Kuwait Finance House. ALAFCO specialises in Sharia-based commercial aircraft leasing.
“Our customers are seeing rapid recovery in demand. The A350-900 is best suited to meet the needs of our customers in the decades to come. The A350 XWB will be a strong asset in our portfolio,” said Ahmad Al Zabin, ALAFCO’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.
“Growth in the industry is undeniable. As passenger traffic begins to recover, we are delighted that ALAFCO have chosen the most popular A350 XWB model. This decision is further evidence of a wider industry trend towards larger aircraft,” said John Leahy, Airbus Chief Operating Officer Customers.
The A350-900 typically has a capacity of around 40 more seats than the smaller 800 model.
The A350 XWB (Xtra Wide-Body) Family is Airbus’ response to widespread market demand for a series of highly efficient medium-capacity long-range wide-body aircraft. With a range of up to 8,300 nm / 15,400 km, it is available in three basic passenger versions: the A350-800 accommodating 270 passengers, the A350-900 seating 314 and the A350-1000 for 350 passengers in a typical three-class layout.
The A350 XWB has the widest fuselage in its category, offering unprecedented levels of comfort, the lowest operating costs and lowest seat mile cost of any aircraft in this market segment. With power supplied by two new generation Rolls Royce Trent XWB engines, the A350 XWB Family is designed to confront the challenges of volatile fuel prices, rising passenger expectations and environmental concerns.
Orders for the aircraft stand at more than 530 from over 33 customers. (ends)

Germania has chosen a spacious single class cabin layout for 150 passengers, offering even more comfort and more space for their passengers. The cabin will be equipped with a state-of-the-art entertainment system, containing video screens and in-seat audio channels. Germania’s A319s will be powered by CFM engines.
“The A319 is indeed the most popular aircraft in its segment. Germania and its customers will profit from its proven efficiency and its enormous flexibility for charter and schedules routes. With the modern and eco-efficient A319s we will also provide an important contribution to reducing the impact on environment”, said Axel Trampnau, Chief Executive Officer of Germania.
“A complete fleet renewal is a major step. We are very delighted by S.A.T.’s and Germania’s decision to make the Airbus A319 the reference aircraft of their future fleet”, said Tom Enders, Airbus President and CEO at Airbus. “It is an endorsement of the leading market position of the A320 Family as airlines profit from its unique efficiency and reliability.”
Airbus aircraft share a unique cockpit and operational commonality, allowing airlines to use the same pool of pilots, cabin crews and maintenance engineers, bringing operational flexibility and resulting in significant cost savings.
The A320 Family (A318, A319, A320 and A321) is recognised as the benchmark single-aisle aircraft family. With more than 6,500 aircraft sold, and some 4,300 aircraft delivered to more than 310 customers and operators worldwide, the A320 Family is the world’s best-selling single-aisle aircraft family. Thai Airways International to Order Seven More A330s
(Source: EADS; issued July 21, 2010)
FARNBOROUGH, UK --- Thai Airways International (THAI) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Airbus for the purchase of seven more A330-300s. The aircraft will be delivered from the end of 2011 and will join an existing fleet of 20 A330-300s flying to destinations across the Asia-Pacific region.
The MOU was finalised today at the Farnborough International Airshow in the UK by Captain Montree Jumrieng, THAI Managing Director of Technical Department and John Leahy, Airbus Chief Operating Officer, Customers.
“THAI has selected the A330-300 to meet our medium haul requirement. This will lead to improved efficiency as well as reducing the average age of our fleet. As our objective is to be a first choice airline, we would like to enhance our customer's experience with new aircraft and the best service available on board,” said Capt. Montree Jumrieng. “Our fleet strategy aims to improve efficiency and reduce carbon emissions by matching aircraft size to market demand, while working on fleet simplification in the long-term.”
"We are extremely pleased to sign this MOU with one of our longest-standing customers and most experienced A330 operators," said John Leahy. "THAI's latest commitment once again underscores the A330's status as the most efficient mid-size widebody aircraft in-service today and the right aircraft right now for airlines across the globe."
The modern and efficient A330 is one of the most widely used widebody aircraft in service today. To date, Airbus has won more than 1,000 firm orders for the various versions of the aircraft. More than 700 A330s have already been delivered and the aircraft is currently flying with over 80 operators worldwide.
