Re: Marinha Italiana
First Clear Images of the Italian Submarines being built for Qatar
A new class of submarine, under construction for the Qatari Emiri Navy, has broken the surface. The submarine is under testing in La Spezia on the Italian coast.
H I Sutton 11 Sep 2024
Fresh details of Qatar’s new submarines have been revealed at the MSPO International Defence Industry Exhibition in Poland. The two submarines for the Qatari Emiri Navy are being built by M23 SRL in Bergamo, Italy. The exhibition included a model of the C-Series design, the first time it has been shown in public.
The M23 C-Series submarine has also been observed being tested at La Spezia, the physical and spiritual home of Italian naval special forces. The port has a long and storied tradition of midget submarine construction, both for the nation’s special forces and export.
The submarines were contracted in January 2020 under a deal associated with Italy’s main defence shipbuilder, Fincantieri. The agreement described “the supply of cutting-edge naval vessels and submarines.” Now it is becoming clearer what those submarines will be.
The submarines have been constructed at Ciserano, Bergamo, far inland, 100 km (60 miles) east of Milan. They will have been transported by 250 km (150 miles) road to the coast. The physical confines of the factory in Ciserano, together with the need to transport the submarine by road, limits the size of the submarine.
Extending What Is Known About the Submarine
Previous images of the submarine, reported by us in May 2021 provided some hints to the submarine’s capability. As built, the submarine has a slick superstructure and sliders keel not seen on the previous illustrations. This superstructure is typical of the boats designed by famed naval architect Giunio Santi. Despite its differences, it is clear that the previously shown design is closely related to what we are seeing in the latest model, and in the water.
Santi began building submarines in the 1970s and gained a reputation for high quality and innovation. He pioneered air-independent power (AIP) in the 1980s and developed all-new submarine construction techniques. More recently he built an experimental dry combat submersible (DCS) for the U.S. Navy SEALs.
The submarine has an overall length of 23 meters (75 feet) and a width of 5 meters (16 feet). It can dive to 200 meters (650 feet) and reach speeds of 12 knots. The crew of 6 can be accompanied by a further 6 passengers, typically special forces combat swimmers. These can lock out of the submarine through a special hatch to conduct covert operations.
While relatively short, its fatter beam gives it an overall size comparable to a typical 30 meter (100 foot) submarine. Comparable types, in size terms, include the Iranian Ghadir Class (actually the North Korean Yono design) and the Italian built Cos.Mo.S MG-110.
The M23 design is comparatively heavily armed, with two torpedo tubes housed under the casing. These can house standard 553mm (21 inch) heavyweight torpedoes. The submarine can also carry Murena smart sea mines and launch loitering munitions.

Re: Marinha Italiana
The Italian Ministry of Defense has allocated a budget of €2 billion for two (2) FREMM EVO frigates, €500 million for a third LSS (Vulcano Class), and €45 million for the modernization of the Etna (A-5326) replenishment and logistic support ship, which has been in service since 1998, until the third LSS enters service.
Regarding the surface fleet, the MoD plans to invest up to €2.7 billion by 2036 for the acquisition of two new 180-meter DDX destroyers for the Marina Militare. These ships will replace the two obsolete Durand de la Penne-class destroyers (equipped with Mk13 launcher for SM-1MR SAM). Additionally, the two Orizzonte-class (Andrea Doria) destroyers will undergo a significant mid-life upgrade (MLU) costing up to €1 billion by 2033, after which they will also be replaced by a pair of new DDX destroyers.
This plan will establish a formidable surface force comprising 4 destroyers (DDX), 19 frigates (12 x FREMM ASW/GP/MM/EVO and 7 x PPA), and at least 10 well-armed corvettes and offshore patrol vessels (4? x EPC and 6 x PPX)!
When factoring in the two new aircraft carriers (Cavour CV and Trieste LHD), 12 minehunters, 3 LPDs (LxD), 3 LSSs (Vulcano Class), 8 submarines (U212A and U212 NFS), and various auxiliary units, the #ItalianNavy emerges as one of the most powerful maritime forces in Europe, second only to the #UK and #France, which maintain a strategic edge with their nuclear-powered submarines and ballistic missile submarines.

Fincantieri begins construction of next-gen Offshore Patrol Vessels for Italian Navy.
25 Sep, 2024 - 11:38
According to information published by Fincantieri on September 24, 2024, the Italian company commenced a significant phase today at its Riva Trigoso shipyard with the steel cutting for the first of four next-generation Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs) for the Italian Navy.

The new vessels, developed under a contract awarded to Orizzonte Sistemi Navali, will incorporate advanced technological solutions. One of the most notable innovations is the integrated naval cockpit, developed in collaboration with FincantieriNexTech and Leonardo, offering a new level of automation, maneuverability, and operational safety.
About the OPVs
Scheduled for delivery from 2027, the OPVs are designed for versatility, with missions ranging from maritime patrol, economic zone protection, and pollution response to countering surface threats. The vessels are approximately 95 meters long, with a displacement of around 2,400 tons, and can accommodate 97 crew members.
The OPVs will be equipped with a CODLAD (Combined Diesel-electric and Diesel) propulsion system, enabling speeds over 24 knots, with a range of 3,500 nautical miles at 14 knots. They also include systems for unmanned aerial vehicle operations, with provisions for both helicopters and drones like the AWHero. Combat systems will integrate radars, electronic surveillance, and a variety of weapons, including a Leonardo 76/62 mm gun and smaller remote-controlled units for close-in defense.
Comments
As Italy faces an evolving maritime environment, the need for enhanced capabilities in surveillance, patrolling, and securing its vast Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) is paramount. OPVs offer an adaptable platform that can address a range of missions, from routine surveillance and protecting shipping lanes to responding to pollution threats and controlling illegal activities in Italian waters.
The replacement of aging vessels, such as the Sirio-class and other outdated patrol ships, is another pressing concern. Many of these ships have been in service for decades.

Novos detalhes sobre os cruzadores pesados DDX
14/10/2024 | Pietro Batacchi
