The SCS is a project started in 2019 aiming to bring the Portuguese soldier to the 21st Century, its split into 3 components, “Lethality”, for which the Scar was purchased, “Survivability”, new equipment and uniform, and lastly “C4I”, Command, control, communications, computers, and intelligence.
Under the C4I component, contracted to @EID_portugal, the Portuguese soldier will be equipped in two different ways depending on his role, there is the Commander configuration, for Company, Platoon and Section commanders, and the Soldier configuration for the rest.
Commanders will be equipped the following way:
>A lower echelon radio for communications between the Platoon and Section commanders (R&S Handheld TR-500H-SDHR);
>An individual radio for Section level communications, with integration to the previous one, it will be EID’s TWH-104R4, it also allows georeferencing;
>EID’s TWH-101H1 personal Radio;
>A data terminal that will allow access to the Common Operational Picture (COP) and Situational Awareness (SA), via the DSS-C2, and via EID developed apps it will allow for the management of the two radios and the distribution of energy to the equipment;
*DSS-C2 is a a lower echelon C2 system, it’s a simplified version of @CriticalSftware's BMS in service with several Portuguese Army vehicles, such as the Leopard, Pandur and Vamtac
> A headset that will allow to hear both radios at the same time and select on what network to talk;
> An energy and data integrator, this is EID’s DSI-104, it’s the link between all systems, allows the connection of sensors to the system and can have two batteries plugged in for increased autonomy, it can equally be plugged in on the vehicle and will be worn on the soldier’s back
The Soldier’s configuration is…a bit different, simpler one could say, they get:
>A TWH-104R4 radio for Section level communications, it will also allow for georeferencing and can transmit sensor data via Bluetooth;
>EID’s TWH-101H1 personal Radio;
>A monaural Bowman style headset from EID
All of this is also integrated with the Platoon’s radio operators and vehicles, the first via EID’s TWH-104G3 connected to his man-pack PRC-525 radio, the latter via EID’s TWH-104G2 connected to the GRC-525 radio.
As stated before the contract was signed with EID in 2019 and aimed to be completed in 2026, however a legal challenge from another manufacturer in the tender delayed the project, and it could only start to be executed in 2021.
Currently several C4I systems are undergoing testing, and the first deliveries are expected in 2025
