DSME And HHIC Join Forces On Korea’s Aircraft Carrier Project
Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) and Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction (HHIC) signed a mutual cooperation agreement for the design and build of the Korean light aircraft carrier project (CVX project).

DSME press release translated by Naval News
Lee Seong-geun, DSME CEO, announced on August 19. that he has signed a mutual cooperation agreement with HHIC for the design and construction of the Korean light aircraft carrier project.
In order to win the basic design project for the future Korean light aircraft carrier, which is expected to be completed next year, the two companies agreed to cooperate with each other by concentrating their strengths and capabilities. When the capabilities and resources of both companies are combined, a synergy effect is expected.
DSME has already conducted a review of the possibility of building an aircraft carrier with the Republic of Korea Navy from 2015 to 2016, and has been conducting a conceptual design on its own since the Navy announced its policy to introduce a 30,000-ton class light aircraft carrier earlier this year. In addition, at the MADEX 2021 defense exhibition in Busan in June, DSME signed a research service contract for technology support for a light aircraft carrier with Italy’s Fincantieri shipyards, boosting the comprehensiveness of its own design.
HHIC is known as the only domestic design/build shipyard in the field of large amphibious ships. It successfully built the 14,500-ton amphibious assault ships Dokdo and Marado in 2007 and delivered the later to the ROK Navy in June this year.
“Through this cooperation, it is planned to combine Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering’s superior technology and Hanjin Heavy Industries’ qualified experience. We will do our best to ensure that the aircraft carrier business can be completed successfully.”
Jung Woo-seong, General Manager of Special Ship sales at DSME
Meanwhile, DSME has successfully passed all tests and evaluations of the first 3,000-ton class Dosan Ahn Changho-class submarine, designed independently. DSME delivered it to the Republic of Korea Navy on August 13, along with the steel cutting ceremony of the first ship of the second project.

Naval News Comments:
DSME unveiled its CVX design during MADEX 2021 on June 9, 2021. The company is competing against Hyundai Heavy Industries for the basic design contract award. South Korea’s Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) is expected to select the winning design sometime next year.

Chungnam (FFG-828) is the first vessel of the Ulsan-class Batch-III, designed to replace the older Frigate (FF) and Patrol Combat Corvette (PCC) currently in service in the South Korean Navy.
The domestically designed and constructed Chungnam began construction in 2021 after the contract was signed with HD Hyundai Heavy Industries in March 2020.
As the first 3,600-ton frigate in the South Korean Navy, Chungnam has a length of 129 meters, a width of 14.8 meters, and a height of 38.9 meters. She is equipped with a 5-inch naval gun, a Korean-style vertical launch system, surface-to-air missiles, ship-to-ship missiles, tactical ship-to-ground missiles, and long-range anti-submarine torpedoes.
Chungnam is the first vessel to be equipped with a domestically developed multifunctional phased array radar (MFR), which enables the detection, tracking, and simultaneous engagement of multiple targets in air and on the surface.
The vessel's Integrated Sensor Mast (ISM) incorporates advanced stealth design and includes a four-sided fixed-phased array radar and infrared detection and tracking equipment.
The frigate's propulsion system employs a hybrid propulsion system to minimize underwater noise, and it is equipped with domestically developed hull-mounted sonar and towed array sonar systems (TASS) for superior anti-submarine capabilities.
The Chungnam is expected to be delivered to the South Korean Navy by the end of December 2024 after a period of testing and evaluation. Following its commissioning, the vessel will be deployed for operational duties.

US Approves Possible FMS of SM-6 missiles to South Korea
The US Department of State has approved the potential sales of up to 38 SM-6 Block I Air-Defense (Standard Missile-6) missiles to South Korea under FMS (Foreign Military Sale) program, according to US DSCA’s (Defense Security Cooperation Agency) announcement made on November 14, 2023. The total cost of the program is estimated to be 850 billion Korean won or 650 million USD.
Jamie Chang 15 Nov 2023
Earlier this year, Naval News has reported that South Korea’s DAPA (Defense Acquisition Program Administration) officialized their intention to acquire SM-6 missiles for ROK Navy’s KDX-III Batch II guided-missile destroyers (Jeongjo the Great-class) equipped with AEGIS system. At the time, DAPA expected the total program cost to be at 770 billion Korean won or 586 million USD, but the program cost saw an increase due to an inflation on the currency rate between the Korean won and USD.
The deal includes up to 38 SM-6 Block I missiles, Mk. 21 VLS (Vertical Launching System) cannisters as well as supplies that are required to operate the missiles at their full strength. The primary contractor for this program will be Raytheon Missiles and Defense.
South Korea has been operating the SM-2 ship-to-air missiles on its existing KDX-III Batch I guided-missile destroyers (Sejong the Great-class), but with evolving threats from North Korea it has been seeking for more advanced and longer-range missiles to counter the threat more effectively and efficiently.
SM-6 missiles can greatly increase the ship’s ability to engage in simultaneous combat by adopting an active guidance system in which missiles directly track their targets with their own radar at a maximum range of more than 400 kilometers. Airplanes, ballistic missiles, and cruise missiles can all be intercepted, and the U.S. has already decided to sell SM-6 missiles to Japan last year. The South Korean government believes that the introduction of SM-6 will enable a denser maritime air defense network, further strengthening its ability to respond to North Korean cruise and ballistic missiles.
“The proposed sales of SM-6 missiles will improve South Korea’s capabilities to counter current and future threats while further enhancing interoperability with the United States and other allies in the region” DSCA added.
The missiles, once procured after the congress’ approval, will be delivered by 2031 according to DAPA.
