Aerial refuelling capability of China's J-20 fighter confirmed

Chinese state broadcaster CCTV has shown video footage confirming the in-flight refuelling capability of China's J-20 multirole 'fifth-generation' fighter aircraft. However, the images, which show the platform's refuelling probe being extended and retracted, were pixelated to obscure any details, and no images of the J-20 undertaking in-flight refuelling have yet to be released.

The J-20 was one of the principal exhibits at the 6-11 November Airshow China 2018 defence exhibition in Zhuhai, which has become a key event, not only for displaying Chinese equipment promoted to potential overseas customers, but also as a conduit through which information on China's military capabilities can be released in a controlled but unofficial way. For instance, the images that have emerged of the platforms and weapons chosen for static and aerial display are of much higher quality and detail than those normally circulating on the internet.

The J-20's flying display was one of the highlights of this year's show, with the opening of the aircraft's weapon bays resulting in many images of the air-to-air missile load featuring on the internet and in media outlets around the world. This display coincided with comments made by People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) Deputy Commander Lieutenant General Xu Anxiang announcing Beijing's intent to make the PLAAF a "world-class air force".

Another aerial display at Zhuhai that prompted much interest was that of a J-10B fighter equipped with Chinese-made thrust-vectoring engines. When questioned during a conference in Zhuhai about whether the J-20 will be similarly equipped in the future, J-10B chief design engineer Yang Wei hinted that such trials with the J-20 may already have been conducted.

Other interviews conducted by state media at Zhuhai included that featuring J-20 test pilot Li Gang, who flew the aircraft during its inaugural flight in 2011.

A two-seat version of China’s first stealthy combat aircraft, the Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group (CAIG) J-20, may be in development to fulfil roles as a tactical bomber, electronic warfare (EW), or carrier strike aircraft, according to a report published in the state-owned Global Times newspaper on 16 January.

The concept of a two-seat variant of the J-20 is not new and computer-generated images (CGIs) of such an aircraft have circulated on the Internet for some time.

However, the likelihood that such a variant will be produced has increased following state broadcaster China Central Television’s (CCTV’s) recent release of a TV report showing a CGI of a two-seat J-20. The 16 January report not only highlighted the advantages of having two aircrew in a complex tactical environment, but also asked whether China would be the first country to introduce a two-seat stealth combat aircraft.

A day earlier the US Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) published its China Military Power report, in which its assessment was that the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) “is developing new medium- and long-range stealth bombers”.

The long-range stealth bomber will be the H-20, which the PLAAF confirmed was in development in 2016. No new programme for a medium-range stealth bomber has been identified in open sources, so development of the J-20 for such a role may reflect the DIA’s assessment.

Me impressionou também o fato do J-10C ter sua produção encerrada a partir de 2020, um caça com um potencial enorme para exportação mas que a China nunca se interessou em comercializar, na verdade, o único caça que conheço que a China teve como produto para exportação é o antigo J-7.

Chinese state-owned media have for the first time released an image of a Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group (CAIG) J-20 fifth-generation multirole fighter bearing the serial number of a known combat unit of the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF), suggesting that the aircraft is ready for frontline service.

The image, which was released by state broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV) in late July, shows the aircraft bearing the number 62001, indicating that it has been assigned to the PLAAF’s 9th Air Brigade based at Wuhu, which operates under the PLA’s Eastern Theatre Command.

Commercial satellite imagery captured in March 2019 showed three J-20s at Wuhu Air Base, suggesting that the aircraft have been operating there since early 2019 or late 2018. It is likely that the fighters are replacing the Su-30MKKs assigned to the 9th Air Brigade, which is believed to be one of the premier fighter units within the PLAAF.

Wuhu Air Base is situated near the Yangtze River approximately 280 km inland from Shanghai. The base is home to the 7th and 9th Air Brigades. The 9th Air Brigade received the Su-30MKK in 2001.

Assigning the J-20 to such a combat unit is a significant move because the two previous PLAAF units known to operate the J-20 were related to operational evaluation and tactical training.

As Jane’ s previously reported, the 176th Air Brigade at Dingxin Air Base is the operational test unit used to evaluate the J-20 and develop tactics, and the 172nd Air Brigade at Cangzhou Air Base is the initial training unit for training instructors and developing training material.

China's People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) has released images showing seven Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group (CAIG) J-20 fifth-generation multirole fighter aircraft in the air: the largest number of J-20s to be publicly shown flying in close formation.

No details were provided as to exactly when and where the images were taken but the aerial manoeuvres are believed to have taken place as part of rehearsals for a military parade set to take place on 1 October to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.
