China declares first aircraft carrier Liaoning now "combat ready"

A few days after welcoming the commander-in-chief of Russian naval forces to his home base, China's sole aircraft carrier Liaoning set sail for a new training mission. During this mission, still ongoing, the Liaoning's political commissar, Senior Captain Li Dongyou, said in an interview with Global Times newspaper that the ship is "constantly prepared to fight against enemies".

"As a military force, we are always prepared for war and our combat capacity also needs to be tested by war ... At this moment, we are doing our best to promote our strength and use it to prevent war, and are prepared for actual combat at any time," Li said.

The Chinese Navy (PLAN) released several pictures of this training mission, and CCTV-7 published a video, focusing on the Liaoning propulsion system, a rarely covered topic.

When the ex-Varyag was sold to China, propulsion systems were the few parts of the ship that remained in a proper state. The Chinese engineers then analyzed all the systems and implemented more than 1,000 modifications in order to improve the stability, the reliability and the overall performance of the propulsion.

One of the major changes applied was to reduce the pressure in the boiler pipes, in order to prevent boilers from operating systematically in over-drive mode when the vessel exceeds 18 knots, a problem that was present on its sistership, the Russian aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov.

China's first aircraft carrier now 'combat ready', say Chinese media

Gabriel Dominguez, London and Andrew Tate, London - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly
16 November 2016

The People's Liberation Army Navy's (PLAN's) first aircraft carrier, Liaoning, is ready for combat operations, according to Chinese media reports.

Senior Captain Li Dongyou, the political commissar of the Soviet-era Admiral Kuznetsov-class carrier, was quoted by the state-owned Global Times newspaper on 14 November as saying that "as a military force, we are always combat ready and our combat capacity also needs to be tested by war. At this moment, we are doing our best to promote our strength and use it to prevent war. But we are preparing for actual combat at any time".

The 60,000-tonne Liaoning, which was acquired from Ukraine and commissioned in 2012, had been regarded as a ship for training and development rather than an operational asset, making this the first time the carrier has been formally described as being ready for combat.

In August Chinese state television broadcast images of Liaoning carrying eight Shenyang Aircraft Corporation (SAC) J-15 fighters as well as a Z-18 and a Z-9 helicopter on its deck.

This represented the largest number of aircraft seen on the country's only operational carrier, which first conducted flight operations in November 2012.

The footage prompted Chinese media comments that Liaoning was exhibiting "growing combat capability". During a 4 August TV programme PLAN Rear Admiral Yin Zhou said that Liaoning could carry up to 20 aircraft.

While China has developed the Changhe Z-18J airborne early warning (AEW) and Z-18F anti-submarine warfare (ASW) helicopters, these have yet to be seen together with the J-15 on Liaoning. These aircraft could form a full air-wing for the carrier.

As IHS Jane's reported in August, Liaoning is only known to have conducted short-duration missions mainly in the Bohai and Yellow Seas: largely in support of its primary naval aviation training mission.

The carrier has so far completed only one 'distant' deployment: from its northern base to Hainan Island's Sanya naval base in late 2013, which was also the only time it has been seen sailing with destroyer and frigate escorts.

Chinese, US Navy ships maneuver off California

U.S. Navy destroyer USS Bunker Hill took part in a maneuvering exercise with People’s Liberation Army (Navy) ships off the coast of Southern California, December 9.

The Chinese Navy ships were departing San Diego following a three-day visit.

Jiangkai II-class frigates Yancheng (FFG 546) and Daqing (FFG 576), and the Fuchi-class oiler Tai Hu (AOR 889) joined Bunker Hill exercising communications and safety of navigation, and maneuvering into various formations.

“This was my first time participating in an exercise like this with our PLA(N) counterparts,” said seaman Jerika Robinson. “It gave me a better understanding of the way their [PLA(N)] ships operate.”

The latest visit was the third time Chinese Navy ships visited San Diego since 2014.

China about to Launch the World’s Biggest Guided Missile Destroyer
By Arthur Dominic Villasanta | Dec 10, 2016 08:45 AM EST

Imagem

Type 055. (Photo : PLAN)

Taiwan media is reporting that construction China's first Type 055 guided missile destroyer -- the largest and most heavily armed destroyer in the world -- is nearing completion.
Spy satellite photos indicate construction of the big 14,000 ton destroyer is in its final stages. This means the first Type 055 might be launched in January 2017. Other sources, however, claim the destroyer will be launched later this month.

The photos also show two Type 055 destroyers being built at the Jiangnan Changxing Shipyard in Shanghai. One of these warships, probably the lead ship, is now equipped with engines and radar.
Chinatopix in October reported China's first Type 055 guided missile destroyer will enter service with the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) before 2020.
Displacing 14,000 tons, the Type 055 will become the heaviest destroyer afloat. It's about 2,000 tons heavier than the new USS Zumwalt (DDG-1000) stealth destroyer of the United States Navy that became operational in October.
And with 128 vertical launch system (VLS) cells loaded with a mix of missiles, the Type 055 will have missile firepower greater than the U.S. Navy's Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyers, but will be at par with the Sejong the Great-class guided missile destroyers of the Republic of Korea Navy. The Zumwalt is armed with 80 VLS cells.
The lead ship of the Type 055-class began construction in 2015. When launched, the Type 055 will be the largest non-capital surface warship built in Asia since World War II.
The only warships heavier than the Type 055 were the heavy cruisers of the Imperial Japanese Navy that weighed over 10,000 tons.
The Type 055 will have four large AESA radars for defense against aerial and maritime threats. The radars will be linked to the ship's 128 VLS that carry air-to-air and anti-ship missiles.
The warship will be able to deploy future sensors and weapons like towed array sonar, variable depth sonar, towed torpedo decoys and active torpedo defenses. This means the Type 055 will have an organic anti-submarine capability, helping remedy the PLAN's greatest weakness.
Rear Admiral Yin Zhuo described the Type 055 as a "game changer in naval warfare." Adm. Yin is a member of the PLAN's advisory board on cybersecurity and once served as a national political adviser to the communist central government.
The Type 055 will see service as escorts to the CNS Shandong, China's second aircraft carrier currently being built. But it's the second generation of the Type 055 -- the Type 055A -- China claims will be armed with railguns. PLAN expects to begin building the Type 055A starting 2020.
It plans to initially use its railguns, however, to replace its current close in weapons systems (CIWS) providing the last ditch defense of its surface warships. China's CIWS, the Type 730 seven-barreled 30 mm Gatling gun, is effective against slow aircraft and aerial drones. It's ineffective against supersonic cruise missiles and modern anti-ship missiles, however.

China vai acabar vendendo su33 com o nome chines para a rússia já que 1 caiu no mar e diminuiu o já reduzido número na marinha russa.
