China launches two more ASW corvettes
Andrew Tate, London - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly
12 September 2016
The 36th Jiangdao-class (Type 056/056A) corvette for China's People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) was launched on 7 September at the Hudong-Zhonghua shipyard in Shanghai.
The launch follows a 26 August launch of another ship of the class at the Wuchang shipyard in Wuhan, central China.
The two vessels are both anti-submarine warfare (ASW) variants and will be equipped with towed array and variable depth sonars.
The first of China's 1,500-tonne Type 056 corvettes was launched in May 2012, so the rate of production over the last four years has averaged a new hull about every six weeks. This is being achieved by constructing the ships in four shipyards: the Huangpu shipyard in southern China, the Liaonan shipyard in Dalian in the north, plus the two mentioned above.
The planned size of the class is not known but it seems likely that the total number of ships could be around 60. Armed with four YJ-83 anti-ship missiles, a 76 mm gun, lightweight torpedo launchers and HQ-10 short-range surface-to-air missiles, these ships are expected to be tasked primarily with the role of coastal defence role. Of the 36 vessels in service or under construction, 14 are configured as the ASW variant.

China, Russia ready for joint navy drill in South China Sea(Xinhua)
16:59, September 12, 2016
A Russian fleet arrived at a port in Zhanjiang in south China's Guangdong Province on Monday, with Chinese naval forces gathering for a joint drill.
The "Joint Sea 2016" drill will go ahead between September 12 and 19 in the South China Sea, off Guangdong.
Wang Hai, Chinese chief director of the exercise and deputy commander of the Chinese Navy, said that this year marks the 20th anniversary of the two sides establishing strategic cooperation.
The two sides have conducted six joint navy drills in five years, and the drill will enhance the abilities of both sides to counter common security threats, said Wang at the welcoming ceremony,
Chinese Navy spokesperson Liang Yang said the drill will feature the highest ever level of standardization, combat and digitalization in recent China-Russia drills.
Participants will undertake joint air defense, anti-submarine operations, landing, island-seizing, search and rescue, and weapon use.
The Russian Navy will bring three surface ships, two supply ships, two helicopters, 96 marines, as well as amphibious armored equipment.
Most of the Chinese forces will come from the Nanhai Fleet under the People's Liberation Army Navy, with some from the Beihai Fleet and Donghai Fleet.
A total of 10 ships from the Chinese Navy, including destroyers, frigates, landing ships, supply ships and submarines, will take part in the drill, as well as 11 fixed-wing aircraft, eight helicopters and 160 marines, as well as amphibious armored equipment.
According to a Chinese Defense Ministry spokesperson in July, the drill will not target a third party.

China flight testing modified J-15 for CATOBAR operations
Richard D Fisher Jr, Washington, DC and Gabriel Dominguez, London and Sean O'Connor, Indianapolis - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly
20 September 2016
China has been flight testing a new variant of its J-15 navalised fighter modified for catapult-assisted take-off but arrested recovery (CATOBAR) operations, according to images posted on Chinese online forums.
Released on 15 September, the images show a Shenyang Aircraft Corporation (SAC) J-15 in flight featuring what appear to be modifications to its front undercarriage that would enable the aircraft to conduct catapult-assisted take-offs: yet another indication that China may be planning to develop a CATOBAR aircraft carrier.
Expectations that China's third carrier, which is commonly referred to as the Type 002, will be equipped with catapults were reinforced in early August when images emerged on Chinese online forums showing the country's land-based aircraft carrier mock-up in Wuhan, Hubei Province, undergoing modifications.

Re: Marinha da República Popular da China (PLAN)
China wants to build a US-style aircraft carrier
Alex Lockie
China's sole aircraft carrier, the Liaoning. PLA
China has one aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, that's designated as a training vessel and has never been on a combat deployment, but new photos suggest that they want to build a true, US-style aircraft carrier.
Mike Yeo of the US Naval Institute News Service reports that China has set out to develop a Catapult-Assisted Take-Off But Arrested Recovery (CATOBAR) variant of the Shenyang J-15 Flying Shark.
Right now, China's aircraft carrier uses a ski-jump design, where planes hit a ramp to launch of the ship. This greatly limits the maximum weight of the planes, meaning they can't carry as much fuel or ordnance as land-launched variants can.
Only the US and France operate true flat tops, or aircraft carriers that use either catapults or steam powered launchers that grip and throw the planes off board with such force that no ramp is needed. Therefore, US and French planes launching from carriers can carry much more substantial loads of fuel and bombs for better range and efficacy on missions.
But now photos surfaced in Yeo's piece suggest that China is trying to imitate these flat top carriers. Here's a photo of a J-15 with additional nose landing gear (this is what the catapult couples with during launches).
A photo from the Chinese language Internet showing the nose gear of a J-15 Shenyang thought to be designed for carrier operations. USNI News
Below we see Huangdicun Airbase, where it looks like China has tried to emulate a steam catapult, which the US Nimitz class carriers have, and an Electromagnetic Aircraft Launching System (EMALS), which the US plans to deploy on the coming Ford class carriers.
Huangdicun Airbase. USNI News
Aircraft carriers provide several advantages over land bases, chief among them the fact that aircraft carries allow nations to project power around the globe.
Currently, China is building a second ski-jump style carrier, but it seems it may be planning a third flat top some time soon.

Further progress made on China's Type 001A carrier
Andrew Tate, London - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly
26 September 2016
Images recently published on Chinese online forums reveal that China's first indigenous aircraft carrier (CV), commonly referred to as the Type 001A, is fast nearing structural completion at Dalian shipyard.

The forward part of the carrier's island structure, including the bridge and main mast supporting structure, has been lifted into place: a significant step in readying China's second aircraft carrier for launch.
Fabricated in a covered facility on the dockside, the forward island module is nine decks high and around 30 m long. The aft island module, containing the propulsion plant air intakes and funnel uptakes, was also fabricated on the dockside.

China's 40th Jiangdao-class (Type 056/056A) corvette was launched on 28 October at the Huangpu shipyard in the southern port city of Guangzhou.
The ship is the twelfth of the class to be constructed at the yard. The latest three are currently fitting out at Huangpu or are undergoing post-build sea trials. One of them is expected to enter service with the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) before the end of the year.
Huangpu is one of four shipyards constructing the 1500-tonne Jiangdao-class corvettes at a rate of about one every six weeks.
The corvettes are armed with four YJ-83 anti-ship missiles, a 76 mm gun, two triple-barrelled lightweight torpedo launchers, and an eight-cell HQ-10 short-range surface-to-air missile launcher.
A number of the class have enhanced anti-submarine capabilities (Type 056A) with towed and variable-depth sonars, in addition to the hull-mounted sonar fitted to all of the class.
Although not equipped with a hangar, a Z-9 helicopter can be operated from the flight deck to either supplement the ship's sonar suite with airborne dipping sonar or provide the capability to engage a submarine at greater range than achievable with ship-launched torpedoes.
