Russian Air Force to Get at Least 50 New Strategic Tu-160 Blackjack Bombers
(Source: Sputnik news agency; published May 28, 2015)
POGONOVO RANGE, Astrakhan Region --- The Russian Defense Ministry will purchase no less than 50 new Tu-160 (Blackjack) heavy strategic bombers when production is renewed, Russian Air Force Commander Col. Gen. Viktor Bondarev said Thursday.
“No less than 50 aircraft over time will be purchased in order to cover the costs that will go into production,” Col. Gen. Bondarev said without specifying when production would begin.
Earlier Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu announced the need to renew the Tu-160s production.
Bondarev stated that renewed Tu-160 manufacturing will not lead to suspension of PAK DA, a next-generation Russian strategic bomber developed by the Tupolev Design Bureau, equipped with the newest high-precision weaponry.
PAK DA bombers were previously planned for delivery in 2020, however, Bondarev said earlier in May that the Russian Air Force will start receiving its aircraft in 2023.
The Air Force Tu-160 is now being upgraded, and radar and navigation equipment is being replaced.
The Tu-160 is a supersonic strategic bomber with variable-sweep wings, designed to engage targets around the globe with nuclear and conventional weapons.

Major Overhaul of Russia's Tu-160 Strategic Bomber to Be Completed In 2019
(Source: TASS news agency; published May 26, 2015)
Russia has already upgraded the dozen Tupolev Tu-160 Blackjack supersonic bombers it still operates, but will now undertake a more radical upgrade of its avionics and possibly its engines. (Russia AF photo)
KAZAN, Russia --- A major overhaul of Tupolev Tu-160 strategic bombers will be completed in 2019, Boris Naishuler, the director of the Gorbunov Kazan Aviation Production Association’s design center, which upgrades the aircraft, said Tuesday.
"The first stage of modernization has been completed; the second stage connected with replacement of nearly all onboard radioelectronic equipment on existing aircraft is expected to be completed in 2019," Naishuler told TASS.
He said the process of modernization started with replacement of equipment installed on the planes back in Soviet times.
"The planes have equipment that was manufactured in former republics of the Soviet Union. The modernization is aimed at replacing all that equipment, including navigation systems and communications equipment, with Russian," Naishuler said.
Russia’s Air Force currently has in operation service about 15 Tu-160s, they are undergoing modernization announced in 2012. Besides, it was reported that Tu-160s will get upgraded NK-32 engines - a development batch is to be handed to the military in late 2016.
Russia is currently developing a new strategic bomber dubbed PAK DA (prospective aviation complex of long-range aviation). The new bomber is expected to make its first flight in 2019 and become operational in the Russian Air Force approximately in 2023-2025.
In late April, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu ordered his subordinates to work out the issue of resuming production of those bombers at the Kazan aircraft manufacturer.
The Kazan Aviation Plant, founded in 1927, is a subsidiary of JSC Tupolev. It currently manufactures special purpose aircraft on the basis of Tu-214, as well as repairs and modernises bombers. In addition, the company manufactures and supplies components and assemblies within the framework of cooperation with other plants of the United Aircraft Corporation. In particular, the Kazan plant is preparing for the production of wings and tail assembly for the IL-476 planes.

Army Tests Positive About Caracal Helicopter
(Source: Polish Ministry of Defence; issued May 27, 2015)
(Issued in Polish; unofficial translation by Defense-Aerospace.com)
The SZRP verification group, which included experts and specialists in various fields, both operational and technical, tested the EC 725 Caracal helicopter and gave a positive opinion.
Tests of the EC-725 Caracal -- part of the proceedings in the multipurpose helicopter project for the Armed Forces -- were completed on Wednesday (May 27) at the 33rd Airlift Base in Powidz.
The verification stage of the helicopter project completes the evaluation phase of the bids submitted on 30 December 2014 by contractors participating in the proceedings.
The next step in the procedure will be to negotiate the provisions of the agreement with the selected contractor. At the same time, the Ministry of Economy will be informed of the successful completion of the compliance checks, enabling the start of negotiations offset. After agreeing the contract terms, and signing the offset agreements, it will be possible to sign an acquisition contract.
Deliveries of the first helicopter equipped according to the requirements and in the numbers specified by the contracting authority will begin in 2017.
The purpose of the process was to verify that the technical data provided by the winning consortium for compliance with the real technical parameters as verified during the checks.
Checks were divided into two phases: the first were performed to verify ground characteristics, and the second flight characteristics.
The 32 most important performance and operational criteria included in the tender requirements were selected for the verification process.
These cover four major areas, including: common platform, design of the helicopter, performance and on-board equipment. After verification, the operations group assessed that all stated parameters complied with the actual characteristics of the helicopter.
Verification of the helicopter construction included the interchangeability of fuel and lubricants, particularly those used by NATO; the construction of the landing gear; the number of exits; possession of certifications meeting international aviation standards.
In terms of helicopter performance were checked, among other things: the ceiling, endurance, speed, hover performance, transport capacity and range and mission radius.
The final group of parameters verified the onboard equipment, among other things, the ability to fly by day and night, imaging and communication systems, as well as equipment required to ensure the safe operation of the helicopter.
The verification group was composed of experts and specialists representing the General Staff, the General Command, the Inspectorate of Armaments and Armed Forces Support.
In checking, they were assisted both by experienced helicopter pilots and maintenance personnel from the units which will operate the helicopters.
For the sake of transparency, this verification phase was supervised by the Military Counterintelligence Service, the Military Police and the office for Anticorruption Procedures.

[]sCommon Launcher Development for Typhoon
(Source: BAE Systems; issued May 28, 2015)
The UK Ministry of Defence has provided £1.7 million of funding to research a common weapon launcher for Typhoon that could be capable of carrying multiple weapons and weapon types on one aircraft attachment point.
The project will bring together expertise from ourselves as the weapons integration lead for Typhoon and the weapons manufacturers MBDA and Raytheon UK. If the research is successful this could be the latest development in a programme of activity to ensure that Typhoon continues to deliver world-leading capability for the armed forces.
Andy Eddleston, Typhoon Product Development and Future Capability Director said: "Developing a common weapon launcher solution could significantly enhance Typhoon's ability to deliver increased weapons persistence and effects. Each launcher could be capable of carrying up to three weapons, providing a great deal of flexibility and persistence for the operator."
The common weapon launcher, if the research is successful and the programme taken forward, could offer a flexible and cost effective solution for customers. The launcher could potentially carry weapons such as the Dual Mode Brimstone 2 Missile and the Paveway IV Precision Guided Bomb.
Typhoon is already regarded as a world-leading combat aircraft and it continues to advance in order to deliver the latest technologies to keep its operators ahead in a constantly changing global environment. Recent enhancements in capability include the integration of the Paveway IV Precision Guided Bomb and contracts to integrate the Captor E-Scan radar and the Dual Mode Brimstone Missile.

[]sA First for IAF: Fired From Fighter Jet, Anti-Ship Missile Hits Bullseye
(Source: Hindustan Times, published May 29, 2015)
As part of its wide-ranging and deep upgrade, the Indian Air Force’s Jaguar fighters will gain a naval strike capability with the Harpoon anti-ship missiles, which has now been test-fired. (xairforces.net photo)
NEW DELHI --- The Indian Air Force launched an anti-ship Harpoon missile from a fighter plane for the first time at a pre-designated target in the Arabian Sea last week. The missile, built by US defence giant Boeing, was launched on May 22 from a Jaguar maritime strike fighter that flew 200 nautical miles off the west coast to carry out the mission, a source said.
The fighter belonged to the IAF’s maritime strike squadron based at the Lohegaon airbase outside Pune. The Jaguar was refuelled midair during the mission, the source added.
An official confirmed it was the “first live firing” of the Harpoon from a warplane in India after integration by state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. “It was successful,” he added.
With a range of 124 km, the Harpoon is capable of land-strike missions too.
The navy tested the Harpoon last year when a Boeing P-8I long range maritime reconnaissance aircraft launched the subsonic missile to take out a ‘target’ in the Bay of Bengal.
