Eles comemoram mais nos EUA, por terem salvo a pele deles na Coréia. Por sinal, esse "batalhão" tem mais comendas dos EUA que na França.

No entanto, as comendas que eles ganharam só tem paralelo em outra na história militar francesa, são as da Batalha de Verdum.

The ballistic missile submarine (SSBN) Le Terrible was handed over to the French Navy on September 20, 2010. It has begun a training cycle of several months which will end when it is deployed on its first operational cruise.

Le Terrible is the fourth and final vessel in the Le Triomphant class. This new generation of ballistic missile submarines is fitted with the most modern equipment available and features a reduced sound signature. Designed to evade the most sophisticated sonar, the Terrible and its sister ships (Le Triomphant, Le Téméraire and Le Vigilant) can disappear in the background noise generated by the ocean.


Despite their size and weight, these ultra-modern vessels can win the underwater “silent war.” Their maximum depth and speed were also increased for the same reasons.

Le Terrible is the first submarine of its class to deploy the new M51 intercontinental nuclear missile, which has just been put into operational service. This missile provides a significant improvement in terms of range and accuracy while providing greater operational flexibility.

The three other SSBNs will be successively be modified to accommodate the new missile between 2010 and 2018.


These two simultaneous service introductions mark a major milestone in the modernization of France’s nuclear deterrent.

French carrier heads home one day into Afghan mission

A technical fault has forced France's flagship and only aircraft carrier to return to port less than a day after it set off to fight piracy and terrorism in the Indian Ocean, the navy said Thursday.

Naval spokesman Captain Hugues d'Argentre said the nuclear-powered Charles de Gaulle would be back in its home port of Toulon later in the day and it would take a few days to carry out the necessary repairs.

"A fault was found in the insulation of an electrical cabinet in the propulsion system," the officer said.

The Charles de Gaulle and its escort group -- two frigates, an attack submarine and a refuelling tanker -- set sail from Toulon on Wednesday and had been due to spend four months patrolling the Indian Ocean.

France is the only country apart from the United States to operate a full size nuclear-powered carrier capable of launching fixed-wing jets, but the ship has been plagued with technical problems since it was launched in 1994.

In November 2000 the Charles de Gaulle limped back to port after one of its huge propellers snapped off in mid-Atlantic, and between July 2007 and December 2008 it was taken out of service for a major refit.

In all, the battle group carries 3,000 sailors and 27 aircraft: 10 Rafale F3 fighters, 12 Super Etendard attack jets, two Hawkeye early warning planes and three helicopters.

Rear Admiral Jean-Louis Kerignard, commander of the group, said the force would help allied navies fight piracy off the coast of Somalia and send attack jets to support NATO troops fighting insurgents in Afghanistan.

The ships will also train alongside allies from Saudi Arabia, India, Italy, Greece and the United Arab Emirates and make two stopovers at the French base in Djibouti before returning to France in February 2011.

Frances nunca luta sozinho pois precisa sempre ter por perto exemplo de bravura e coragem para se espelharem.

Sim, foram muito importantes. Se não tivessem entrado na guerra, hoje não existiriam os EUA. Seriam, no máximo, um integrante pequeno da Comonwealth, agrícola, equivalente às 13 colônias, cercado de países que falariam francês e espanhol. Na Primeira Guerra Mundial entraram no fim, quando britânicos e franceses já haviam, em boa parte, revertido a pressão alemã com o uso de blindados e outras técnicas inovadoras. Na Segunda Guerra Mundial, foram responsáveis pela derrota alemã no ar, pois quem carregou os aliados nas costas em terra foi a URSS. Quando falam do Lend Lease não se lembram que a maior parte dos carregamentos estadunidenses para a URSS foi enviada depois da Batalha de Kursk, quando a maré já virara contra o Terceiro Reich no Leste Europeu.

Os franceses foram mal na Segunda Guerra Mundial por falta de um comando eficiente, mas causaram mais baixas entre os alemães que os soviéticos no início dos combates. Se não fossem as forças de Juin, os norte-americanos não tinham passado da metade da bota italiana, o próprio Mc Clark reconhece isso. Estamos aqui para discutir tecnologia militar e não para demonstrar preconceito ignorante. Se citar a Indochina, lembre-se de quem saiu correndo, vergonhosamente, de Saigon, jogando helicópteros na água...
