Sweden Makes Jet Fighter Offer to Greece

(Source: Forecast International; issued April 3, 2009)

ATHENS --- Sweden has positioned itself as a contender for the Greek jet fighter program by offering up its Gripen as an alternative to the French Rafale, the Eurofighter Typhoon, and the Boeing F-18E Super Hornet.

Greece is pursuing a two-round procurement strategy in its pursuit of a new state-of-the-art combat aircraft. The first round is to conclude this year and calls for an initial procurement of 40 aircraft with an option for a further 20. Deliveries would then take place in 2010 and 2011.

The Swedish proposal includes 30-40 new-generation, multirole Gripens built to NATO specifications, with delivery coming 24 months after the contract is signed. Sweden also is offering up an intermediate solution, whereby Gripens that are already operational are provided to Greece as a bridge until the new-build models arrive. These could be in Greek service within six months of the contract being approved.

In addition, Sweden is offering infrastructure and maintenance support for the Greek Gripens, as well as extensive industrial cooperation and technology transfer.

SAAF to ask Saab to adjust Gripen deliveries for World Cup
Written by Leon Engelbrecht
Monday, 06 April 2009

http://www.defenceweb.co.za/images/stories/AIR/2008sep18%20aad%20228.jpg

The South African Air Force wants some single-seat Saab JAS39C advanced light fighter in inventory before next June’s FIFA Soccer World Cup.
Chief of the Air Force Lt Gen Carlo Gagiano says the fighter will be deployed to safeguard the world soccer event.

Under present scheduling SA is set to receive nine dual-seat Gripen D trainer/command-and-control aircraft first and then 17 Gripen C single seat fighters.

Gagiano says this might have to change as the Gripen will be key to securing SA’s airspace during the event. “We are arming the two seaters with missiles and we are arranging to maybe get some one seaters as well, to exchange duals for single seaters,” Gagiano said last week.

“A production line is a rigid thing but we should have a number of them by next June.”

Shield 3

Gagiano also expressed himself well pleased with the outcomes of last month’s Exercise Shield 3, one of a series of force preparation exercises ahead of the global soccer festival.

Shield 3 tested, among other things, the ability of the police, Air Force and Air Traffic Navigation Service (ATNS) to coordinate airspace control and enforce “no fly” zones around soccer stadia.

“It went extremely well. What I’m very happy about is we are moving much closer to the ATNS people. That is for me very important, as we are the two key roleplayers. That was for me the success of Shield 3,” Gagiano said.

Kgwele

The SAAF will have an array of aircraft on duty for the event, including missile-armed Gripen, cannon-fitted BAE Systems Hawk Mk 120 light fighters and Denel CSH2A Rooivalk attack helicopters.

“The focus is on ensuring the airspace is safe”, says Gagiano of Operation Kgwele, the SANDF’s world cup support plan.

Speaking on the edge of a rough grass airstrip at the Roodewal Bombing Range in Limpopo, Gagiano added that “airstrips like these have got to be manned.

“We have to have police and people on these strips because you can have someone with [evil intent] take off and there are about 60 airfields in the Gauteng area.

“So, it is matter of clearing all airliners, we need to make sure there are no people coming in who are not cleared and validated. And then obviously [with] all our radars integrated with civilian radars we [will] keep a picture of what’s going on,” the air chief says.

“You’ll have Gripen, Hawk, Rooivalk and light aircraft like [Pilatus] PC12 and Astra. The light aircraft will intercept and order mavericks out of [no fly] areas but if things look bad then you’ll have to send fighters.

“…we [will] have a mix of aircraft because a helicopter cannot take on an airliner that’s diverting from its flight path. You need a Gripen to do that. Some airliners [are fast] …it may take the Hawk a long time to catch up especially if you are at a [poor] aspect to intercept, Gagiano says.

SA receives Gripens 06 and 07
Written by defenceWeb

South Africa has taken delivery of its latest two Gripen multi-role fighter aircraft, which form part of the SA Air Force’s modernisation and transformation programme.
The aircraft, both of which are dual-seat operational variants, arrived in Cape Town on Friday afternoon.

They are the sixth and seventh Gripens of South Africa’s 1999 combined order for 26 Gripens - of which nine are dual-seat aircraft - and 24 Hawk lead-in fighter trainers (which have all been delivered).

SA paid R19.908 billion for the Gripen and R7.2 billion for the Hawk .

Deliveries of 17 single-seat fighters will commence when all of the dual-seat aircraft have been taken into SA Air Force service later this year and will continue, according to schedule, until 2012.

The SA Air Force Gripen fleet is operated by 2 Squadron, which is stationed at AFB Makhado in South Africa’s northern Limpopo province.

Pilot and technical support training by Saab, the Gripen’s Swedish manufacturer, has been underway at the base since early 2008. The first group of pilots comprises six SAAF Gripen pilot instructors.

They will instruct South Africa’s new generation of fast jet pilots graduating from 85 Combat Flying School where they are prepared for Gripen by training on the new Hawk trainers.

Apart from the comprehensive conversion to type training for pilot and maintenance technician instructors, Saab has also provided and delivered mission simulators, a computer-based training system, and an extensive logistics support package consisting of ground support equipment, spare parts and other enabling products. These are located at AFB Makhado and at other SAAF supporting bases.

Testando o que não foi oferecido, gostaria de saber como é fazer provas e voar em algo inexistente, ou voar no que existe fazendo uso da imaginação. Estão gastando recursos a toa, senão voarem no Demo.
