Royal Navy mothballs three more destroyers

The UK Royal Navy's (RN's) destroyer/frigate force has effectively been reduced to 22 operational ships after the Type 42 Batch 2 destroyers HMS Exeter , HMS Southampton and HMS Nottingham were brought alongside and placed at reduced readiness ahead of their declared out-of-service dates. All three ships remain in commission, but are considered unlikely to go to sea again under the white ensign, barring a major contingency

Astute Delays

(Source: UK Ministry of Defence; issued Sept. 15, 2008)

The Sunday Telegraph business section has reported that the Astute nuclear submarine programme could be further delayed.

Constructing nuclear submarines is one of the most complex and sophisticated projects the maritime industry undertakes. The skills required to build each are particularly specialised. Technical issues with first of class vessels are not uncommon.

We are working closely with BAE Systems to minimise impact to the overall programme, and in addressing such matters, the safety of the boat and its crew – which will operate in the most demanding conditions - are paramount at all times.

The Astute submarines will represent an exciting increase in capability that will keep the Royal Navy, alongside the US Navy, at the top of the submarine nations' leader board.

The end of the HMS Superb submarine

End of the road for stricken Navy sub

The Royal Navy’s longest serving nuclear submarine has been taken out of service five months after hitting rocks in the Red Sea.

But a Navy spokesman denied that damage to HMS Superb has had anything to do with her de-commissioning and claimed that it was because of her age.

The nuclear-powered Faslane based sub, which has been in operation for more than 30 years, hit the headlines in May when she struck rocks in the Red Sea.

None of the 112 crew were injured in the incident, which damaged the vessel’s sonar equipment and forced her to surface. The submarine remained watertight with the nuclear reactor ‘completely unaffected.’

A Faslane spokesman said: “The de-commissioning was due to the fact that she is the oldest submarine in the fleet.

“She has given great service both to the Royal Navy and the nation.”

The 272 foot attack vessel had passed through the Suez Canal and was in the northern Red sea, 80 miles south of Suez, when she hit an underwater rock pinnacle.

As a result, the submarine was unable to dive and had to limp back to Plymouth, where the White Ensign was lowered for the last time without her returning to Faslane.

The farewell ceremony featured a performance from the Royal Marines Band and contributions from former commanding officers and crew.

HMS Superb, a Swiftsure Class submarine, also known as a ‘hunter-killer,’ was one of six made and came into service in 1976.

Four have already been de-commissioned with the final boat, HMS Sceptre, due to end her career in 2010.

Lieutenant Commander John Aitken, Superb’s Commanding Officer, said: “It is with some sadness that we bring an end to the career of a submarine that has given longer service than any other in the Royal Navy and that occupies a fond place in the hearts of all who have served in her.

“We can look back with pride on her achievements and those of the men who have served in her. However, we also look forward with anticipation to the new challenges that her tight-knit ship’s company will face as they go on to new postings and look forward to the future that Astute will bring.”

Built during the Cold War, HMS Superb was designed to counter threats from Soviet submarines in the Atlantic and protect shipping and NATO operations in the event of a ‘hot’ war erupting.

Following a shift in strategic priorities in the post-Cold War 1990s, Superb’s tasks became more varied.

The submarine recently trained with the Flag Officer Sea Training staff in UK waters, before travelling to Suez.

HMS Superb will be laid up at Devonport Naval Base before a decision is taken on disposal.

Enter the Dragon

Imagem

(November 17, 2008) -- The Royal Navy's latest addition to the Type 45 destroyer fleet, to be called HMS Dragon, roared its way into the Clyde from BVT's shipyard at Govan today, complete with an 18 metre long Welsh Dragon attached to its bow.

Dragon will join her sister ships as one of the largest and most powerful warships in the world.

As well as providing air defence over a wide area, including for the future aircraft carriers, the Type 45s will be highly versatile and able to conduct a variety of operations. They will be able to carry up to sixty Royal Marines Commandos and their equipment and operate a Chinook sized helicopter from the flight deck.

Minister of State for Defence Equipment and Support, Quentin Davies said:

"I am delighted to be here today to witness the launch of our latest destroyer Dragon. She is a fine example of the UK's shipbuilding prowess and will boost the Royal Navy's capability when she enters service in 2012.

"These are exciting times for shipbuilding here in the UK and today's launch marks another milestone in the T45 programme. Work for the Type 45 Destroyers and the Future Aircraft Carriers is sustaining thousands of jobs, not just here in Scotland but across the country. I look forward to watching Dragon's progress as she undergoes her sea trials next year."

Admiral Sir Mark Stanhope, Commander in Chief Fleet, said:

"The launch of Dragon is another important landmark in delivering future Royal Navy capability. We are in the middle of the largest procurement programme for the Royal Navy in many years and today's event underlines the importance of the Royal Navy in the 21st Century.

"The Type 45 destroyers will be powerful and versatile ships, capable of undertaking a wide range of military tasks. They are based on first-class innovation and engineering which will set new standards in air defence and they will ensure that the Royal Navy remains at the forefront of the world's navies."

Complete with the latest upgrade to satellite communications systems, the destroyer will carry the world-leading PAAMS system (Principal Anti-Air Missile System) allowing it to defend high value ships from the most dangerous air threats, including multiple attacks by sophisticated anti-ship missiles.

Speaking after the launch, Alan Johnston CBE, CEO of BVT Surface Fleet said:

"The launch of Dragon is an excellent opportunity to celebrate the progress that is being made on this programme here on the Clyde and I am delighted that so many people have turned out to share this occasion with us.

"Only four days ago, the second ship in the class, Dauntless, departed the Clyde on her maiden voyage, her first set of sea trials off the west coast of Scotland, and today we have seen their magnificent sister ship take to the water for the first time.

"Each of these milestones on the Type 45 contract is testament to the innovation, design and engineering skills of our employees and partners and proof of our commitment to building the next generation of warships for the Royal Navy."

HMS Cardiff head for the scrap heap

HMS Cardiff left Portsmouth undertow of tug bound for Aliaga, Turkey for scrapping. The final VT-built modules of the last Type 45 destroyer (Duncan) are scheduled to leave for the journey to Scotland on 22 November.

During her career, Cardiff served in the Falklands War, where she shot down the last Argentine aircraft of the conflict and accepted the surrender of a 700-strong garrison in the settlement of Port Howard. During the 1991 Gulf War, her Lynx helicopter sank two Iraqi minesweepers. She later participated in the build-up to the 2003 invasion of Iraq as part of the Royal Navy's constant Armilla Patrol; Cardiff thwarted attempts to smuggle oil out of the country, but was not involved in the actual invasion.

projecto dos novos porta-aviões britânicos possivelmente adiado por DOIS ANOS....

from the Finantial Times:

Navy faces aircraft carriers delay
By Sylvia Pfeifer and Alex Barker

Published: December 4 2008 23:32 | Last updated: December 4 2008 23:32

The Royal Navy will have to wait up to two years longer for its £4bn aircraft carriers under cost-cutting plans being finalised by John Hutton, defence secretary.

The decision to push back one of the government’s sacrosanct defence equipment programmes represents a sharp reversal. Ministers have always insisted the two ships would be in service by 2014 and 2016.

According to industry insiders, the Ministry of Defence is considering two options: delaying the in-service date of the first carrier by 12 months or delaying the second ship by up to two years.
Mr Hutton’s willingness to delay such an important programme underlines the severity of the cash crisis facing the MoD. He has expressed determination to make the department “live within its means” while prioritising support for frontline troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

He is expected to stress that investment will not stop and there will be no impact on jobs. The delay, intended to spread costs, will also help synchronise the project with the expected delivery in 2017 of the F-35 Lightning II or Joint Strike Fighter, the aircraft being built to fly from the ships.

Industry executives think the earlier in-service dates unrealistic given the contract for the programme was signed this year.

The results of a review of the equipment programme are expected early next week. No major programmes will be cancelled but most will face some delay. The moves will not be enough to allow the MoD to balance its budget for 2009.

Future Lynx, the £1bn helicopters programme, is safe although the final number ordered will be cut marginally. AgustaWestland, the defence contractor, will be awarded an additional contract to upgrade existing Lynx helicopters for use in Afghanistan.

A £16bn programme to build armoured vehicles for the army will be revamped. The MoD is expected to prioritise investment in the Scout reconnaissance vehicle rather than the Fres utility vehicle, in a blow to General Dynamics, the US contractor that this year won a provisional contract for the design.

The Society of British Aerospace Companies wrote to Alistair Darling, chancellor, and Peter Mandelson, business secretary, before last month’s pre-Budget report urging them to consider the contribution the sector could make to an economic stimulus package.

On Thursday night the MoD said it hoped to make an announcement “in due course”.
