Raytheon in talks with India on jt production of Paveway bombs

US defence major Raytheon has initiated discussions with Ordnance Factory Board on licensed production of the Paveway precision guided bombs that it earlier sold to the Indian Air Force, a top company official said here today.
The Paveway system, which uses laser guidance and is an all-weather precision weapon, was sold to the IAF in the 1990s and Raytheon recently carried out tests in India to ensure that the existing systems still had shelf life for use with the Jaguar combat jets.
As part of its efforts to focus on building long-term relationships with Indian private and state-run defence firms, Raytheon has now offered the licensed production of the Paveway system to the OFB, said Ben Ford, director of Raytheon's strike weapons division.
"We have had discussions with the OFB for licensed production of the Paveway system as we want to establish long-term relations with India instead of just selling equipment," Ford told PTI at the Paris Air Show.
This is the first time that a US firm like Raytheon has offered to provide technology for the licensed production of a precision guided weapon system though firms from other countries have offered expertise to build similar systems.
The Paveway systems sold to India by Raytheon before the US imposed sanctions in the wake of New Delhi's 1998 nuclear tests had a shelf life of 10 years. After tests on similar systems in the US revealed that their shelf life was much longer, Raytheon sent its experts to India to work with the IAF to check the status of the Paveway equipment, he said.
"Our tests showed the shelf life could be longer if the systems were stored and maintained properly. Our experts worked with the IAF last year and established that the system had a shelf life of 20 years," said Ford.
Raytehon's strike weapons division, which makes the Paveway and missiles like HARM, Maverick and Joint Standoff Weapon, is also open to offering these systems for the IAF's programme to acquire 126 modern combat jets.
"These would be ideal candidates for the multi-role combat aircraft programme," said Ford.

The first of a series of new helicopters for the U.S. president has made its maiden flight. Designated VH-71, the new helicopter completed a successful 40-minute flight on 3 July 2007. Developed by the European firm AugustaWestland, the VH-71 is produced by a partnership of that firm with Lockheed Martin and Bell Helicopter Textron.
When the President has embarked, a helicopter has the designation "Marine One." But no specific VH-71 will be designated as such.
The Marine Corps plans to procure three test aircraft and 23 operational aircraft of this type, based on the now-operational EH.101 helicopter. That aircraft is now flown by the Royal Navy, Royal Air Force, Italian Navy, and Canadian Forces as well as by agencies of several other governments. More than 130 EH.101s are in operational service.
Initial operational capability of the VH-71 with the Marine Corps is scheduled for late 2009. The helicopters will be flown by Marine Helicopter Squadron (HMX) 1, based at Quantico, Virginia, with a detachment at the naval station in Anacostia, Washington, D.C. The VH-71 will replace the long-serving VH-3D Sea King, now operated by HMX-1 to transport the President and other senior government executives.
HMX-1 also flies the UH-60A/N helicopters in support of the White House, although the President does not normally fly in those aircraft. The squadron is one of the largest in the U.S. armed forces with about 50 Marine officers and 600 enlisted men, plus a Navy detachment of about four officers and 15 enlisted men. The squadron, which provides test and evaluation services for the Marine Corps, also flies CH-46E Sea Knight and CH-53E Super Stallion helicopters.
During the 40-minute flight on 3 July, AgustaWestland test pilots performed general aircraft handling checks, tested flight characteristics at varying speeds up to 135 knots, and evaluated the on-board avionics systems.

A Lockheed Martin e a Aurora Flight Scienes Corporation receberam contratos de US$49 e US$46,8 milhões, respectivamente, para desenvolver um demontrador para o programa Advanced Composite Cargo Aircraft (ACCA). O objetivo é projetar, desenvoler e produzir um demonstrador de tecnologia com estrutura avançada, novas técnicas de produção e aerodinâmica avançada. O objetivo é diminuir o peso e custos das futuras aeronaves de transporte. Uma das propostas será selecionada para a próxima fase com a produção de um protótipo com vôo previsto para 2009. O objetivo final é substituir o C-130 após 2015 com o projeto Advanced Joint Air Combat System (AJACS).
