Thales to Support Maintenance of Chilean Frigates

(Source: Thales Nederland; issued Oct. 24, 2006)

EURONAVAL --- ASMAR (Astilleros y Maestranzas de la Armada), the maintenance and support organization of the Chilean Navy, and Thales Nederland signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the subject of Thales providing support to ASMAR for the maintenance of the Thales equipment on board of the four frigates of the Chilean Navy that were purchased from the Royal Netherlands Navy.

The MoU was signed by Rear Admiral H.J. Pearce, Director of ASMAR and A.C. Blokhuis, Vice President of Thales Naval Services Nederland. In the MoU, ASMAR and Thales express their intention to sign a contract on this matter in November 2006, at Exponaval in Chile.

The two former RNLN air defence frigates and two multi-purpose frigates are currently being transferred to the Chilean Navy. The last one is scheduled to be operational in April 2007.

The Thales systems on board of these vessels include the SMART-S and LW08 surveillance radars, the STIR fire control radar, the Goalkeeper close-in weapon system, the PHS36 sonar, the combat management system, operator consoles and various communication systems.

After-Sales Manager Jan Kupper: "The present MoU marks the beginning of a long-term relation between the Chilean Navy and Thales. We are confident that this cooperation will be beneficial to both partners."

Thales is a leading international electronics and systems group, serving defence, aerospace and security markets worldwide. The group’s civil and military technology businesses develop in parallel to serve a single objective: the security of people, property and nations. Thales employs 60,000 people across 50 countries and generated revenues of EUR 10.3 billion in 2005.

Thales Nederland, established in 1922, is one of the leading companies in integrated naval systems for surveillance, weapon control, and combat management world-wide. (ends)

BAE Systems Signs Memorandum of Understanding with ASMAR for Chilean Frigate Support

(Source: BAE Systems; issued Oct. 25, 2006)

PARIS --- BAE Systems and the Asmar Shipbuilding and Ship repair company have signed an MoU to cooperate on ship support for the Chilean Navy. Under the terms of the agreement the two companies will work in partnership to support the three former Royal Navy frigates once they enter service, as well as the Type 22 frigate, Almirante Williams, currently operated by the Chilean Navy.

The MoU, signed during the Euronaval international naval and maritime defence exhibition, follows on from a UK/Chile government-to-government agreement to transfer three UK Royal Navy ships to the Chilean Navy. In September 2005 BAE Systems was awarded the contract to prepare and transfer the Type 23 frigates, the first of which, HMS Norfolk, is scheduled to arrive in Valparaiso Naval Base in June 2007. The second and third ships, HMS Marlborough and HMS Grafton, will follow, with the last delivery due in 2008.

Commenting on the agreement, BAE Systems regional managing director for Europe and the Americas, Bob Keen, said: “This is an important development in our ongoing relationship with the Chilean Navy and the country’s maritime industry. Combining the skills and technical knowledge of BAE Systems and Asmar will provide a step change in support for the Chilean Navy, ensuring the ships have the highest availability rates.”

Nigel Billingham, managing director CS&S Naval, added: “The support of military assets is key to ensuring they meet the operational requirements of the customer. This is the first of a number of agreements that will provide the Chilean Navy with the necessary support to meet its national and international naval objectives.”

The three ships will replace the BAE Systems manufactured Leander class ships, which currently form an important part of the current Chilean fleet. BAE Systems Customer Solutions and Support (CS&S) is working in partnership with the UK Defence Logistics Organisation and UK industry to prepare the ships for transfer and train the crews.

BAE Systems is the premier transatlantic defence and aerospace company delivering a full range of products and services for air, land and naval forces, as well as advanced electronics, information technology solutions and customer support services. With 86,000 employees worldwide, BAE Systems’ sales exceeded GB£15.4 billion (US$28 billion) in 2005.
