Indian Cabinet approves procurement of 83 Tejas LCA aircraft

India’s Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) approved on 13 January the procurement of 83 indigenously designed Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) for the Indian Air Force (IAF), including 73 Mk 1A fighters and 10 Mk 1 dual-seat trainers.

The Indian government’s Press Information Bureau (PIB) announced that same day that the CCS, which is headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, cleared the acquisition of the aircraft for INR456.96 billion (USD6.24 billion) along with work on the design and construction of related infrastructure for INR12 billion (USD164.3 million).

The PIB noted that this is the first procurement under the Ministry of Defence’s (MoD’s) ‘Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed, Developed, and Manufactured)’ of combat aircraft featuring an indigenous content of 50%, which is expected to progressively reach 60% by the end of the programme.

The LCA Mk 1A, which was designed by the government-run Aeronautical Development Agency and will be built by state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) in Bangalore, is still under development.

Once completed, the aircraft will include four major capability improvements over the basic Mk 1 model, which is currently being series-built by HAL and inducted into the IAF. These include active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar, updated electronic warfare systems, and air-to-air refuelling capability, as well as the capability to fire beyond-visual-range (BVR) missiles.

Self reliance: 1-in-2 Tejas fighters to have desi radar

BENGALURU: In a major boost to indigenous defence technologies, at least 51% of the 123 LCA Tejas fighters that will be inducted into the Indian Air Force (IAF) will have the desi Uttam radar, replacing Israeli radars that the first batch of aircraft will be equipped with.

In all, IAF will get 123 Tejas fighters: 40 in initial and final operational clearance (IOC and FOC) configurations and 83 Tejas Mark-1A, orders for which were placed in the first week of February. While the first 40 will have mechanical radars (all Israeli), 83 Mk-1A planes will have Active electronically scanned array (AESA) radars.

“We will have the Uttam radar from the 21st Tejas Mk-1A to be produced. Uttam has performed better than anticipated in the trials so far. We’ve already signed an MoU with HAL” DRDO chairman Sateesh Reddy told TOI.

This means 63 of the 83 will be indigenous Uttam radars developed by LRDE (Electronics and Radar Development Establishment), a DRDO lab in Bengaluru. The TOI had reported in 2019 that Uttam radars were likely to replace the AESA radars — the EL/M 2052 — from Israeli firm ELTA.

This is in line with the Centre’s push for increasing indigenous content in defence equipment and will enable HAL to increase the same on Tejas from the present 52%.
R Madhavan, CMD, HAL, which is producing Tejas, said: “...That is what we are panning for. Given the delivery timelines we’ve committed to, we will place orders for 20 Israeli radars and Uttam should be ready thereafter. We are targetting to increase indigenous content in Tejas to 62% to 65%, and this will help achieving that.”

Uttam is a state-of-the-art AESA radar that can track multiple targets and take hi-resolution pictures to aid in reconnaissance. Seshagiri P, project director, Uttam, said it’s being tested on two LCAs — LSP2 and LSP3 — and one executive jet. Together they’ve completed around 230 hours of flying, including 30 on LCAs.

“On the LCAs, testing is for air-to-air mode at present. The range of the radar should be almost commensurate to launch a BVR (beyond visual range) weapon; it’s specified to be so. But we’re getting a range that’s better than that. We are a couple of sorties away from starting a joint evaluation. After this, it will be ready for user evaluation” Seshagiri told TOI.
On the executive jet, Uttam’s tested three basic modes — air-to-air, air-to-sea and air-to-ground. “...The same needs to be ported on LCA and checked for performance. There’s a fourth mode called navigation terrain avoidance, weather mode (rain bearing clouds)” Seshagiri added.

According to LRDE, Uttam is a current generation system with features that allow aircraft to boast of low probability of intercept and non co-operative target recognition. “It provides better situational awareness of the battlefield scenario and is capable of tracking multiple targets with high accuracy suitable for firing missiles and interleaved air-to-air, air-to-ground and air-to-sea modes for all terrain solutions,” LRDE said.

O alcance estendido do Astra Mark 2 dará à Índia uma vantagem sobre seus adversários e acrescentaria mais letalidade aos seus caças em combate aéreo. Os testes estão programados para serem iniciados no segundo semestre deste ano. Os oficiais da IAF (Indian Air Force – Força Aérea da Índia) esperam que o míssil esteja totalmente desenvolvido e operacional até 2022.

O atual Astra (Mk.1) é um míssil ar-ar além do alcance visual (beyond visual range air-to-air missile – BVRAAM), 100 km de açlcance e velocidade de Mach 4,5. O míssil está sendo integrado ao pequeno Tejas.

O Alto comando da IAF planeja usar o Astra para diminuir a dependência tecnológica, substituindo os caros BVRAAMs russos, franceses e israelenses que atualmente equipam os caças da Força Aérea.

A Força Aérea e a Marinha da Índia já assinaram contrato para 288 mísseis Astra Mark 1, que já foram integrados nos caças Sukhoi Su-30MKI.

Força Aérea Indiana participará pela primeira vez do Desert Flag nos Emirados Árabes Unidos

A Força Aérea Indiana (IAF) participará do Exercício Desert Flag-VI junto com as forças aéreas dos Emirados Árabes Unidos, Estados Unidos, França, Arábia Saudita, Coréia do Sul e Bahrein pela primeira vez, informou nesta terça-feira o serviço indiano.

O exercício está programado para os dias 3 a 21 de março na base aérea de Al-Dhafra, nos Emirados Árabes Unidos.

O Exercício Desert Flag é um exercício anual de guerra de emprego de grande força multinacional organizado pela Força Aérea dos Emirados Árabes Unidos.

A IAF está participando com seis caças Su-30MKI, dois C-17 e um IL-78. O C-17 Globemaster fornecerá suporte para a indução e retirada do contingente da IAF.

A aeronave Su-30 MKI empreenderá um translado de longo alcance, com rota direta da Índia para a área de exercícios com o apoio de reabastecimento aéreo da aeronave IL-78.

O objetivo do exercício é fornecer exposição operacional às forças participantes, enquanto as treina para realizar operações simuladas de combate aéreo em um ambiente controlado, disse o comunicado.

As forças participantes terão a oportunidade de aprimorar suas capacidades operacionais, disse, acrescentando que também haverá um intercâmbio mútuo de melhores práticas.

O exercício em larga escala envolvendo diversos caças de todo o mundo proporcionará às forças participantes, incluindo a IAF, uma oportunidade única de trocar conhecimentos, experiências, aprimorar as capacidades operacionais e a interoperabilidade.

Exercitar e interagir com as nações participantes em um ambiente de guerra dinâmico e realista também contribuirá para fortalecer as relações internacionais, disse o comunicado.

3 Rafale Fighter Jets To Land In India Today

Three Rafale fighter aircraft are scheduled to land at the Jamnagar airbase around 10:30 pm.

Paris [France]: Another batch of Rafale fighter jets have taken off on a non-stop flight to India with mid-air refuelling by the United Arab Emirates (UAE), said the Indian Embassy in France on Wednesday.

According to Indian Air Force officials, three Rafale fighter aircraft which took off from France for India are scheduled to land at the Jamnagar airbase around 10:30 pm.

On Tuesday, Emmanuel Lenain, Ambassador of France to India had said that five extra Rafale jets will be ferried to India by the end of April. This would be other than the three Rafales which are arriving on Wednesday.

"Right now 21 Rafales delivered to India, 11 already ferried to India, three are right now being ferried and 5 extra will be ferried by end of April," French Envoy to India had said while speaking exclusively to ANI.

"Total in 2022, the 36 aircraft will have been delivered as per contract," he added.

The aircraft had started joining the IAF fleet in the July-August timeframe last year and were quickly operationalised by the Air Force in the shortest possible time.

The aircraft had also been deployed for patrolling along the China front in eastern Ladakh and other fronts during the height of the China confrontation.

The planes equipped with the Hammer missiles have enhanced their capability to carry out air-to-ground strikes like the one in Balakot.

Índia planeja arrendar até seis aviões-tanque A330 MRTT da França para treinamento
Reabastecedores A330 MRTT foram usados para transportar 17 caças Rafale da França para a Índia desde julho de 2020.

A Força Aérea Indiana (IAF) abordou o governo francês para alugar uma aeronave multifuncional de transporte e reabastecimento Airbus A330 para fins de treinamento como um precursor para alugar mais cinco reabastecedores de voo que tem objetivo de aumentar a capacidade de combate e o raio de seus caças multifuncionais.

O arrendamento será feito governo a governo, com o IAF já emitindo uma solicitação de informações (RFI) para uma única aeronave, enquanto uma solicitação de rota de propostas será usada para os cinco reabastecedores adicionais em arrendamento. A questão foi discutida durante a visita do Marechal do Ar RKS Bhadauria à França na semana passada.

“Com a IAF olhando para os reabastecedores A330 para seu futuro, é natural que seus pilotos sejam treinados com antecedência para lidar com a aeronave, já que o reabastecimento em pleno ar é um processo de precisão com margem zero de erro e enormes riscos”, disse um oficial da IAF.

Os reabastecedores A330 da França e da Força Aérea dos Emirados Árabes Unidos foram usados para apoiar até 17 caças Rafale para a Índia, desde a Base Aérea de Merignac-Bordeaux desde julho de 2020. Outros sete caças devem chegar à Índia em maio com um lote sendo implantado na nova base aérea de Hashimara em West Bengal com Ambala sendo a primeira base.

Embora a IAF tenha seis reabastecedores aéreos IL-78M de origem russa, os reabastecedores A330 ultrapassam a aeronave existente em termos de versatilidade, já que esta última pode não apenas transportar carga de combustível, mas também transportar tropas e carga de armas no modo roll-on/roll-off. No caso do IL-78M, houve limitações no transporte de carga, bem como na decolagem com carga útil de bases de alta montanha como em Leh e Thoise.

O A330 pode não só operar com carga na fina atmosfera de Ladakh e além, mas também fornecer combustível para caças indianos nas alturas do Himalaia. O A330 tem um alcance máximo 14.800 quilômetros.

Em janeiro de 2021, os pilotos da IAF puderam treinar com seus colegas franceses durante o exercício Desert Knight 21. Junto com quatro caças Dassault Rafale e duas aeronaves de transporte Airbus A400M, a Força Aérea Francesa também levou para Índia um reabastecedor A330 MRTT (Phénix) para fins de treinamento.

Com as aeronaves Rafale de primeira linha em seu estoque, a IAF precisa de reabastecedores aéreos compatíveis para que esteja pronto para conter qualquer movimento do norte. A IAF deve estar em um estado de prontidão, pois o exército chinês está relutante em restaurar o status quo na área de Gogra-Hot Springs, no leste de Ladakh, enquanto o PLA se fortalece ao longo da Linha de Controle Real até Arunachal Pradesh.

De um certo modo, apesar do país ser um aterro sanitário a céu aberto lotado de miséria e poluição, eu admiro a dedicação Indiana as vezes até obtusa e cega em construir uma indústria de defesa nacional autônoma e formar Forças Militares capazes de lutarem uma guerra convencional contra a China, apesar de não terem nem 1/5 do PIB Chinês.

Eu sinceramente sou extremamente cético quanto ao desempenho de mísseis com motor foguete ou turbina contra alvos acima de 130 km, mesmo que seja de pulso duplo. A perda de energia a partir dos 100 km é bem considerável, ao ponto de eu achar dificílimo conseguir ter energia para manobrar bem contra caças.

Esse é um dos motivos principais para mísseis com turbinas ramjet.

Three more Rafale fighter jets to arrive in India from France tonight

NEW DELHI: Three more French-origin Rafale fighters are slated to touch down in India, after mid-air refueling by tankers of France and UAE, on Wednesday night.

The three new jets will add to the 17 such omni-role fighters, which have a combat range of 780-km to 1,650-km without mid-air refueling, already delivered to India.

IAF will get all the 36 twin-engine Rafales, contracted under the Rs 59,000 crore deal inked with France in September 2016, by next year.The first Rafale squadron, 17 `Golden Arrows’ Squadron, is already operational at the Ambala airbase. The second, 101 `Falcons’ Squadron, in turn, will now come up at the Hasimara airbase in West Bengal, as was reported by TOI earlier.

The 4.5-generation Rafales are armed with long stand-off weapons like the over 300-km range `Scalp’ air-to-ground cruise missiles. The fighters are also being equipped with the top-notch Meteor air-to-air missiles, which with a strike range of 120 to 150-km can outgun any missile that can currently be unleashed by Pakistani or Chinese jets.

IAF has also ordered the “Hammer” air-to-ground precision-guided munitions for the Rafales, in a deal that came last year amidst the ongoing military confrontation with China in eastern Ladakh.

With a strike range of 20 to 70-km, the Hammer munitions are designed to destroy bunkers, hardened shelters and other targets in all terrains, including the mountainous one in Ladakh.
