Late on May 19, a Turkish combat drone targeted a position of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) near the northern Syrian town of Manbij, according to several Syrian sources. Manbij, one of the largest urban centers in the northern Aleppo countryside, is held by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). The SAA maintains a series of positions around the Arab town in coordination with the Kurdish-led group to deter the Turkish military and its proxies. The Turkish drone strike hit a position located in the village of Majra Wastani, to the north of Manbij. The Hawar News Agency, which is linked to the SDF, said that four soldiers were killed in the strike. Other news sources reported that three more soldiers were wounded. The Syrian Ministry of Defense has not confirmed or denied the reports yet. Turkish combat drones targeted SAA positions in SDF territory in northern and eastern Syria on several occasions in the last few years. In some cases the strikes were carried out by mistake. The alleged deadly strike came amid efforts by Russia and Iran to restore relations between Turkey and Syria. The foreign ministers of the four countries met in Moscow earlier this month to push forward the normalization process. Damascus insists on a Turkish withdrawal from Syrian territory before relations are fully restored. Ankara rejects this demand. Just a few hours before the strike near Manbij, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that he is keen to turn the page with his Syrian counterpart, Bashar al-Assad. However, he insisted on maintaining a military presence in Syria, citing the threat posed by Kurdish forces. If confirmed, the Turkish drone strike against the SAA would be the fourth to target northern and eastern Syria this month. All previous three strikes targeted personnel of the SDF and its affiliates, who are viewed by Ankara as branches of the terrorist-designated Kurdistan Workers’ Party.

On May 18, two Turkish drone strikes hit the northern Syrian village of Kharoufiyah, which is held by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). Kharoufiyah is located near the town of Manbij in the northern Aleppo countryside. Manbij is one of the largest Arab urban centers controlled by the SDF and a known stronghold of the Kurdish-led group. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a London-based pro-opposition monitoring group, said that the first drone strike targeted a vehicle of the Women’s Protection Units (YPJ), the all-female branch of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) which forms the core of the SDF. Two personnel of the YPJ were wounded in the strike. Minutes later, a second drone strike hit civilians attempting to rescue the casualties. One of the civilians sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead later. This was the second Turkish drone strike to target SDF territory this month. On May 5, a drone strike hit a vehicle near the village Kairouan in the northeastern countryside of al-Hasakah. The strike killed two security personnel of the SDF. Later on May 11, a strike near the town of Kobane in the northeastern Aleppo countryside claimed the life of Tuba Karakoc, a financial affairs official of the group. The strike was carried out by the Turkish National Intelligence Organization. Turkey considers the YPG, YPJ and the SDF to be the Syrian branches of the terrorist-designated Kurdistan Workers’ Party. Ankara threatened to launch a new ground operation against Kurdish forces in Syria on several occasions over the last few years. However, it refrained from carrying out its threats due to pressure from both the United States and Russia.

Syrian government forces repelled an attack that was launched from the southeastern area of al-Tanf that is controlled by the United States-led coalition and its proxies, Rear Admiral Oleg Gurinov, deputy chief of the Russian Center for Reconciliation of the Opposing Parties in Syria, announced on May 18. Gurinov noted that the incident demonstrated once again that the U.S.-led coalition had failed to fulfill its commitment to control al-Tanf and prevent radical groups from committing terror attacks. Around 200 U.S. troops are usually deployed at al-Tanf garrison, along with hundreds of militants from a proxy group known as the Syrian Free Army. The group has been recruiting and training more militants with direct support from the coalition. The U.S.-led coalition maintains a 55-kilometer no-fly zone around al-Tanf. However, Russian fighter jets conducted dozens of armed patrols over the garrison in the last few months. Coalition proxies were accused of launching attacks from al-Tanf against government forces, civilians and vital infrastructure facilities in southern, central and eastern Syria on several occasions over the last few years. ISIS is also known to be present within the area’s no-fly zone. In April, Syrian government forces conducted a large-scale operation around al-Tanf to identify and neutralize sabotage and reconnaissance cells, which were trained by the U.S.-led coalition. Russia targeted coalition proxies in al-Tanf after attacks were launched from the area in the past. However, the situation around the area remains unstable.

Trucks carrying chemical substances from Iran crossed through Iraq into Syria through the Al Hari crossing near the border. The trucks were accompanied by people wearing HAZMAT suits and masks. The trucks unloaded their contents at a chemical facility belonging to the Iranian Revolutionary Guards in Al Hari and after two hours they continued to the city of Albu Kamal.

In Syria, about the conduct of the CTO in the provinces of Aleppo, Al-Hasakah and Deir Ezzor, the Syrian Democratic Forces fighters detained eight militants of the Islamic State. According to Arab-Kurdish resources, jihadists were organizing terrorist attacks in the region. Two detainees in N. p. Tel Khamis provided logistical assistance to IS militants and collected intelligence on security forces in the province of Al-Hasakah. During searches in the homes of the detainees, the fighters of the Arab-Kurdish forces seized weapons and logistics documents.
