New fighter force at risk in defence cutbacks

THE Government is to announce massive cuts in defence spending in the wake of the global economic crisis, insiders revealed today.

Sources claim that a severe round of cuts on major programmes is expected within months as it tries to plug a £1.5billion shortfall in the defence budget. The revelation comes ahead of a major two-day conference on defence procurement at the Queen Elizabeth Conference Centre, in Westminster, starting today.

John Hutton, the new Defence Secretary, has been told he must adopt a more realistic budget and warned he cannot put off a major defence and security review until after the next election. "The budget is bust, and the cupboard bare," said Professor Gwyn Prins, a strategic analyst at the LSE. "Something has to give."

Experts warn the purchases most at risk surround two 65,000-tonne aircraft carriers, the Prince of Wales and Queen Elizabeth II, costing around £4 billion, which are due to be completed by 2014 and 2016. Funding for the carriers is secure but Britain is considering pulling out of a £9 billion project with America to produce new fighter planes, which will fly off the carriers.

Britain has ordered 150 of the Lockheed Martin F-35 joint strike fighter planes but experts warn that long delays on the project and soaring costs could scupper the deal.

A LM concodou em abrir os códigos para integração dos mísseis. O problema foi o prazo para entrega do F-35 exigido pela FAB.

não tem sentido para quem está completamente por fora do assunto. O HMD do Rafale e outros funciona de dia. A noite os pilotos usam o NVG e o HUD mostra imagem do FLIR (Damocles no caso do Rafale). No JSF o HMD funciona de dia e a noite. É bem simples e por isso é a última geração dos HMD.

Disse que queria saber o que os pilotos vão achar de estarem sem HUD, o que só será possível quando o mesmo entre em serviço, aí você disse um monte de coisas, minha observação não tem resposta, só mesmo você é capaz de responder algo que só existirá no futuro.

Eles vão ter um HUD onde quer que olhem. Já foi testado há mais de 10 anos. Só na sua cabeça vão testar em campo para ver se funciona.

Sim, em um combate, sem HMD, o F-35 já era, vai ejetar, se tiver HUD ainda dá para combater. Sem HUD e HMD só você vai ficar dentro de um caça no meio de um combate moderno. O F-35 não provou nada, afinal, quem vai provar ou não é a operação, tempos atrás, tiraram o canhão, depois tiveram que colocar de volta. Os caças melhores terão HMD e HUD, agora os mais baratos só HMD.

Então um caça que dá pane em HUD vai ter que ejetar. Nunca ouvi falar sobre isso. Pior é que tem gente que acha que esse cara entende alguma coisa e que não é troler.

Italy alters role in F-35 programme

Italy has adjusted its role in the Lockheed Martin-led partnership for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, dropping an initial purchase order but signing two key industrial deals.

Rome says it will not participate in the initial operational test and evaluation (IOT&E) phase of the F-35 programme, declining a chance for its pilots to be involved in defining tactics and procedures ahead of first deliveries to the Italian air force.

Accordingly, Italy has dropped plans to buy its first of two early examples of the F-35 in the third lot of the programme's low-rate initial production phase. The purchase of a planned second F-35 in LRIP lot 4 is also now unlikely.

Italy's decision reduces Lockheed's total LRIP lot 3 order to 16 confirmed aircraft, including 14 from the US government and two for the UK. The Netherlands is also considering buying two F-35s to participate in the IOT&E phase, with a recommendation on whether to acquire the aircraft or buy Saab's rival Gripen NG expected before year-end.

Italy's defence ministry initially planned to buy 131 F-35s, including 109 conventional take-off and landing F-35As for the air force and 22 short take-off and vertical landing F-35Bs for its navy. The aircraft would replace the AMX, Boeing AV-8B Harrier and part of the air force's Panavia Tornado fleets. However, this plan is believed to have recently been reduced to about 100 fighters, with a final order plan likely to be finalised in 2010.

Italy's decision to drop out of the IOT&E phase comes as its government makes heavy cuts to this year's defence budget. However, the nation has moved forward on investing in a final assembly and checkout line for the JSF at Cameri airbase, which is aimed at producing and supporting all Italian and Dutch F-35s worth about $8.6 billion.

Alenia Aeronautica also on 6 October confirmed its role as a second source to build 1,200 wings for the F-35 in Italy.

But Italian industry remains concerned about its overall role in the JSF programme. Italy's Institute of International Affairs has released a report that concludes there are "still some critical issues relating to transferring technologies but also the need for European countries to increase their co-operation to increase their bargaining power".
