The Portuguese Army mechanized brigade BrigMec (Brigada Mecanizada) is to receive soon a crew training turret. The system will serve to train the crews of Portugal´s Krauss-Maffei Wegmann GmbH & Co. KG Leopard 2A6 main battle tanks on the turret´s operation.
37 battle tanks, a single Leopard 2A4 based driver training vehicle and associated systems were received from the Royal Netherlands Army (RNLA) according a contract placed to the Dutch DMO (Defensie Materieel Organisatie) by the Portuguese procurement agency DGAIED (Direcção-Geral de Armamento e Infra-Estruturas de Defesa) through the NAMSA (NATO Maintenance & Supply Agency).
The BrigMec has two battle tank squadrons or ECC (Esquadrão de Carros de Combate) with 14 Leopard 2A6s each and a single reconnaissance squadron (Esquadrão de Reconhecimento-ERec) equipped with six Leopard 2A6s. A third battle tank squadron still operates between 8 to 10 units of the ubiquitous M60A3 TTS battle tank.
Two Leopard 2A6s are part of the command & support squadron ECS (Esquadrão de Comando e Serviços).
A single truck based simulation training system was also received from the Royal Netherlands Army.
