Amphibious Transport Dock Ship Handed Over to Navy

(Source: Korea Overseas Information Service; issued July 3, 2007)

The Navy commissioned a large multipurpose transport vessel Tuesday (July 3) after two years of trial operation.

The 14,000-ton Dokdo Ham (ship), named after Korea's easternmost islets in the East Sea, can carry up to 700 troops, seven choppers, six tanks, seven armored vehicles and two small landing boats.

The 199-meter long, 31-meter wide ship, the largest in the South Korean Navy, is equipped with a Phalanx closed-in weapons system for detecting and destroying incoming anti-ship missiles, and a Rolling Airframe Missile guided missile system.

Navy officials said the Dokdo, launched by Hanjin Heavy Industries & Construction in 2005, will play a leading role in the Navy's efforts to become a blue-water navy, together with the country's first Aegis warship, Sejong the Great, launched in May.

In fact, the Dokdo can be used for not only military landing operations, but also for United Nations peacekeeping operations and international relief activities.

"It reflects the people's desire for the Navy to faithfully carry out its mission of protecting the national interest in oceans as well as guarding our territorial waters and islands," Vice Adm. Ahn Ki-seok, head of the Navy's operational command said in a speech at a ceremony to mark the commissioning of the ship.

More than 500 sailors attended the ceremony held at the naval port in Jinhae, 410 kilometers southeast of Seoul.

The Navy plans to develop another transport ship of the same class as the Dokdo by 2010.

The South Korean Son Won-il U214 class is equipped with a SPHINX-D Radar System supplied by Thales Defence Deutschland GmbH. It uses an additional pulse transmitter in the top of the mast. The combination of high power pulse radar and a very low power LPI transmitter is very effective for submarine. During surface operation the boat sails with an open pulse fingerprint for ESM systems, but within a secret mission the operator switches to LPI mode. The boat remains invisible for others.

South Korea launches 10,000-ton combat support ship

Julian Ryall, Tokyo and Michele Capeleto, London - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly
29 November 2016

South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) launched on 29 November the first 10,000-ton combat support ship on order for the Republic of Korea Navy (RoKN) at the company's Ulsan dockyard, HHI said in a press release.

The vessel, which has been named Soyang, is to become the largest support ship in the RoKN after it completes sea trials.

According to specifications provided by HHI, the 190 m-long vessel has a beam of 25 m, a top speed of 23 kt, and is able to carry up to 10,000 tons of oil and 1,000 tons of food and ammunition.

Soyang is fitted with a flight deck to accommodate helicopters, a 25-ton crane, and defensive weapon systems, including chaff dispensers.

HHI said that, compared with previous ships, the new vessel has "greatly improved" cargo loading capability and manoeuvrability.

Soyang will be able to simultaneously supply several ships and play a big role in increasing the [RoKN's] operational capabilities, said the company.

The new vessel will be formally delivered to the RoKN next year and be operational in the first half of 2018, Yonhap news agency reported. Once Soyang is in service, the RoKN will have four large auxiliary support vessels.

Soyang will also be the second-largest ship in the RoKN after the 14,500-ton Dokdo-class helicopter carrier, Yonhap added.

South Korea starts construction of second amphibious assault ship

Imagem

The South Korean Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) announced the construction start of a second Dokdo-class amphibious assault ship on Friday, April 28.

The keel-laying ceremony was held at Hanjin Heavy Industries & Construction Co. in Busan, according to DAPA.

The first Dokdo-class ship, ROKS Dokdo, was built at the same shipyard as the second vessel in the class. It was launched in 2005 and commissioned in 2007.

Measuring 199 meters in length with a beam of 31 meters, ROKS Dokdo is one of the largest amphibious assault ships in Asia, DAPA noted.

Named ROKS Marado, the second vessel is set to be launched by April 2018, while the commissioning is expected to take place by 2020, following tests and evaluations.

DAPA also said the new vessel would incorporate improvements and upgrades that were identified by the Republic of Korea Navy through the operation of ROKS Dokdo.

The Republic of Korea Navy (RoKN) has received its first FFX-II-class guided-missile frigate, according to a statement on 1 February by South Korea’s Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA).

Named Daegu (with pennant number 818), the 122 m-long ship was handed over to the service by Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME in a ceremony held at the company’s Okpo shipyard on Geoje Island. It is expected to be operationally deployed from the second half of 2018.

Launched in June 2016, Daegu is the first of up to eight vessels of the class expected to enter service with the RoKN. The FFX-II class is a larger variant of South Korea’s six Incheon (FFX-I)-class ships, the first of which entered service in 2013.

According to specifications provided by DSME, the FFX-II class has an overall beam of 14 m, a standard displacement of 2,800 tonnes, and a full-load displacement of 3,650 tonnes. The platform is powered by one Rolls-Royce MT30 gas turbine engine, and two DRS permanent magnet motors powered by MTU 12V 4000 diesel-generator sets, in a combined diesel-electric or gas (CODLOG) configuration. The ship can attain a maximum speed of 30 kt.

The FFX-II class is armed with one 127 mm MK 45 MOD 4 naval gun and one Raytheon six-barrelled 20 mm Phalanx close-in weapon system mounted on the top of the aft superstructure.

It has also been equipped with a 16-cell Korean vertical launching system for surface-to-air missiles and anti-submarine rockets. The cells, each of which can be sub-divided depending on the type of missile, may also be used for land-attack missiles.

Also present on the ship are slant launchers for anti-ship and land-attack missiles, along with hull-mounted and towed array sonars as well as six 324 mm torpedo tubes for anti-submarine warfare.
