Average cost for F-35 fighter jumps 27%

The price tag for the Lockheed Martin F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) has jumped 27% since the programme’s original baseline estimate.
Average unit procurement cost has risen from $50.2 million to $69.3 million, based on 2002 dollar values, says Maj Gen Charles Davis, JSF programme manager.

Davis, who spoke to reporters via teleconference today, attributed 92% of the cost increase to four factors: fewer planned aircraft purchases by the US military, inflation, a spike in titanium costs and the added overall costs to manufacturer the stealth fighter.
Even as the average cost to buy the F-35 rises, the estimated price to support the jet is falling.
The latest selected acquisition report released on Monday by the US Department of Defense (DOD) shows that the programme’s overall cost estimate has slightly declined.
Those figures stand in contrast to a recently published estimate by the US Government Accountability Office, which projected the programme’s overall cost had jumped about 10% since 2006.
DOD officials are currently considering an option to buy the next 12 F-35s for the second lot of low-rate initial production.
The purchase would include six conventional takeoff and landing F-35As and, after the short takeoff and vertical landing (STOVL) variant flies, perhaps six F-35Bs.
Lockheed plans to fly the first F-35B in conventional mode in late May or early June, and complete the first flight in STOVL mode with the lift fan system engaged by the end of the year.

Não sei se isso foi pra frente. Mas esta claro que se refere a aquisição por parte de uma força dos EUA, não a produção referente aos outros sócios e possíveis compradores.

Selected Acquisition Reports summarize the latest estimates of cost, schedule and technical status. The reports are prepared annually in conjunction with the president's budget. The total program cost estimates provided in the SARs include research and development, procurement, military construction and acquisition-related operation and maintenance. Total program costs reflect actual costs to date as well as future anticipated costs. All estimates include anticipated inflation allowances.
The F-35 program is on schedule to deliver aircraft to the U.S. military services beginning in 2010. The first test aircraft has completed 40 flights and has exceeded performance and reliability expectations. The inaugural flight of the first short takeoff/vertical landing F-35B is on schedule for mid-2008. All 19 test aircraft are in production flow or on the flightline, and assembly has begun on the first two production F-35s.
The F-35 is a supersonic, multi-role, 5th generation stealth fighter. Three F-35 variants derived from a common design, developed together and using the same sustainment infrastructure worldwide will replace at least 13 types of aircraft for 11 nations initially, making the Lightning II the most economical fighter program in history.
Lockheed Martin is developing the F-35 with its principal industrial partners, Northrop Grumman and BAE Systems. Two separate, interchangeable F-35 engines are under development: the Pratt & Whitney F135 and the GE Rolls-Royce Fighter Engine Team F136.
Headquartered in Bethesda, Md., Lockheed Martin employs about 140,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services. Putz! Agora o Beraldi vai ser acusado de ter escrito tal matéria.
Aos poucos as coisas vão se confirmando e os descrentes acabarão se convencendo de várias coisas. Mas esteja preparado, Beraldi, a próxima "fase" é dizer que tudo isso não se aplica ao Brasil, pois serão comuns argumentos do tipo "o Brasil é o último da fila, logo se comprar o F-35 será lá para 2020", "como o Brasil é o último da fila, quando o F-35 chegar o mesmo estará custando o dobro", e por aí vai.
Etapas já cumpridas: convencimento de que a proposta de F-35 pra FAB é real; que o preço atual não supera os 90 milhões de dólares a unidade; que o F-35 não será mais caro do que o Rafale (por exemplo).
Etapas não cumpridas: prazo de entrega dos F-35 pra FAB em 2014 (aproximadamente), se o mesmo for escolhido; que a FAB realmente está interessada neste caça; que a FAB já o escolheu (esta é impossível!!! hehehe).
A coisa não será fácil... Aliás, nunca foi!!!

Pq muitos especialistas têm dito que muito provavelmente a 5a geração (e variações) de caças será a última tripulada. Eu, em particular, não ouvi nada até agora sobre caças usados, ou "quebra-galhos", ou ainda sobre "caças low". Acredito fortemente que teremos apenas caças novos, mas naturalmente que dependendo do caça escolhido e do tempo de entrega, algumas novas opções poderão surgir (ou seja, não descarto, apesar de não acreditar nem um pouco).Tchelo escreveu: Olá a todos!
