The aircraft will be produced at the company's Aircraft Integration Center of Excellence in St. Augustine, Florida. Northrop Grumman will manufacture the Japanese E-2D on the same multiyear production line used for U.S. aircraft, which allows for a more efficient and affordable delivery schedule. The E-2D is the world's only AEW aircraft in production.

"For more than 50 years, Northrop Grumman has partnered with Japan by providing a range of capabilities and technologies in defense, security and communications," said Jane Bishop, vice president, E-2D Advanced Hawkeye programs, Northrop Grumman. "We are honored to continue this strong partnership through the E-2D program, which brings Japan a powerful new tool that meets their immediate airborne surveillance needs and facilitates information sharing across many platforms, making it a force multiplier for the future as well."

In 2014, the Japanese Ministry of Defense competitively selected the E-2D to fulfill the nation's AEW requirements. The Japan Air Self-Defense Force has operated the E-2C Hawkeye since the 1983. The E-2C is also currently used by Taiwan, France and Egypt.

Hawk trainer jet crashes in West Bengal state of India
Aug 4, 2016

Indian Air Force trainer jet crashes in West Bengal state, both pilots ejected safely.

The jet crashed around 11:00 am on Thursday in the Eastern Indian state of West Bengal. Both pilots successfully ejected from the aircraft and are in good condition according to Indian media.

The IAF received 24 aircraft directly from BAE Systems with deliveries beginning in November 2007, and further 42 Hawks assembled by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited between 2008 and 2011. In February 2008, India planned to order 57 more Hawks, with 40 going to the Indian Air Force and the remaining 17 to the Indian Navy.

In July 2010, it was announced that the IAF and the Navy would receive the additional 57 aircraft. The additional aircraft will be all built in India by Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL), continuing to work under licence from BAE. In February 2011, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited and GE Aviation signed a contract under which GE Aviation will conduct the next 30 years of maintenance on the Hawk fleet.

Families of AN-32 aircraft victims angry over IAF and navy authorities

VISAKHAPATNAM: With no trace yet the Indian Air Force AN-32 aircraft that went missing over the Bay of Bengal on July 22, the anxieties of the families of eight NAD staffers from Visakhapatnam who were among the 29 persons on board are now turning into anger at the officials of IAF and Navy.

More than two weeks since the mystery disappearance, the families called a press conference here on Friday and alleged that the authorities of the NAD and the Indian Navy have stopped communicating with them about the search operations in the last five-six days.

They said the NAD has been stonewalling all their queries with a stock answer: the search is going on. "We are vexed listening to the same answer every day. All of us have young children. We need clear updates on the missing aircraft and the fate of the people on board," said J Prasad, a relative of one of the missing persons, Samba Murthy.

A few of the families also alleged that the search operations have slackened after the initial days of vigour. They also blamed the IAF authorities for callousness in the maintenance of the AN-32 aircraft which had reportedly developed three technical snags within the month prior to its July 22 flight.

The eight employees of NAD started out from Visakhapatnam on July 20 and reached Chennai at around 8 am on July 21. They were assigned to fix a routine defect in a weapon system CRN-91 on board the INS Battimalv docked at Port Blair.

Lockheed Martin receives second IRST21 spares contract

Lockheed Martin received its second contract to provide IRST21 sensor system spares to the U.S. Navy. The USD 23.7 million firm-fixed-price contract includes system spares to support the IRST21-equipped F/A-18E/F fleet.

http://defense-update.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/irst-fa18ef-1021.jpg
The contract was awarded by the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) Aviation, which is the U.S. military’s integrated materiel manager for repair parts and operating supply items in support of fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft. Lockheed Martin received its first IRST21 spares contract from DLA Aviation in 2015, valued at USD 16 million.

“The U.S. Navy will receive the spares in conjunction with the low-rate initial production deliveries, which enables cost savings in procurement and production,” said Paul Lemmo, vice president of Fire Control/SOF CLSS at Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control. “Most importantly, it ensures that this new capability is readily available for the warfighter.”

The IRST21 sensor system uses infrared search and track technology to detect and track airborne threats. Compared to radar, IRST21 significantly enhances the resolution of multiple targets, enabling pilots to accurately identify threat formations at longer ranges. This “see first, strike first” capability empowers pilots with more reaction time and improves survivability.

Iraq is to acquire the Insitu ScanEagle unmanned aircraft system (UAS) under a USD8.3 million deal announced by the US Department of Defense (DoD) on 10 August.

Under the deal, which was awarded the day before, the country's military will receive an undisclosed number of systems, as well as spares and support services, by the end of August 2017 as part of the government of Iraq intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance services programme. No further details were disclosed.

The ScanEagle aircraft is 1.2 m long, has a wingspan of 3 m, and is launched using a pneumatic catapult. It has a service ceiling of 10,000 ft and an endurance of more than 20 hours. The ScanEagle is equipped with electro-optical, infrared, and high-resolution video cameras that enable the operator to track stationary and moving targets.

A 'system' typically comprises multiple air vehicles (upwards of 12 in some cases), as well as associated pneumatic launchers and Skyhook recovery apparatus. Based on the procurements of other nations - in 2014 Yemen signed for a system of 12 ScanEagle vehicles for USD11 million - Iraq's system is likely to be made up of about nine vehicles.

It was previously reported that the Iraqi Army would eceive the ScanEagle before the end of 2014, along with the hand-launched AeroVironment RQ-11 Raven small UAS (SUAS). There were also reports that Iraq may have already received the ScanEagle, but these were never confirmed and the DoD contract announcement is the first official notification of any such sale to the country. There has been no word as to the status of the Raven buy.

Airbus Helicopters has signed a contract with the Kuwait Ministry of Defence for the purchase of 30 H225M Caracal multirole utility helicopters as well as an associated support and services package, during the visit of the French Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian to Kuwait today.

“We are greatly honored that the Kuwait Ministry of Defence has chosen the H225M Caracal as the best platform to fulfill its demanding operational requirements” said Guillaume Faury, CEO of Airbus Helicopters. “Our relationship with Kuwait dates back more than 40 years with Super Pumas, Pumas and Gazelles having been delivered to the Armed Forces of the State of Kuwait over the past decades. This H225M Caracal contract opens a new chapter in our cooperation. I would like to personally thank the Kuwait Air Force which placed its trust in our products to renew its helicopter fleet, and I am also grateful for the confidence of the Kuwait National Guard which has decided to create its helicopter squadron with the support of Airbus Helicopters”, Guillaume Faury added.

During the visit, Airbus Helicopters representatives recognized the key role played by French Minister of Defence Jean-Yves Le Drian who provided his continued support to the realization of this project, in line with the existing France-Kuwait strategic relationship.

Kuwait’s fleet of H225M Caracal will be used for a wide variety of missions such as combat search-and-rescue, naval operations, medical evacuation and military transportation. The helicopters will be operated by the Kuwait Air Force and the Kuwait National Guard. A combat-proven platform with exceptional payload, a world-class automatic flight control system and long endurance, the H225M Caracal has demonstrated its versatility and performance even in the harshest operational environments.

The H225M Caracal is the latest evolution of the successful Super Puma / Cougar family of military helicopters, with more than 500 units delivered worldwide. Kuwait is the latest nation to join the community of Caracal users with 138 H225M Caracal having been ordered so far by France, Brazil, Mexico, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and Kuwait.
