Israel publicly warns Assad: If you attack us, we will topple your regime

Official tells New York Times transfer of advanced weapons to Hezbollah would destabilize entire region.

"If Syrian President Assad reacts by attacking Israel…he will risk forfeiting his regime," a senior Israeli official told the New York Times on Wednesday.

The Times' White House correspondent Mark Landler wrote that the official contacted the newspaper on his own initiative.

Landler added that the official had been briefed in the last two days by other senior Israeli officials, who have intimate knowledge of the recent developments in Syria. He spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the topic.

The official added that Israel is considering further strikes in Syria in order to prevent the transfer of advanced weapons into Hezbollah's hands.

"The transfer of such weapons to Hezbollah will destabilize and endanger the entire region,” the official said. "If Syrian President Assad reacts by attacking Israel, or tries to strike Israel through his terrorist proxies, he will risk forfeiting his regime, for Israel will retaliate."

“Israel has so far refrained from intervening in Syria’s civil war and will maintain this policy as long as Assad refrains from attacking Israel directly or indirectly,” the official added.

A senior Israeli official noted that the decision to contact the New York Times was made at the highest levels of Israeli government. According to him, the objective was to make Israel's position regarding the smuggling of weapons from Syria to Hezbollah clear to Syria and the international community, as well as the dire consequences that a Syrian attack on Israel would have on the chances of survival of Assad's regime. The Prime Minister's Office refused to deny or confirm that they were behind the story in the New York Times.

Last week Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah said that Syria would supply his organization with 'game-changing weapons' in response to recent air raids near Damascus, which foreign reports attributed to Israel.

In response to the alleged attacks, he said, Damascus would provide the Lebanese militia with sophisticated weapons that it has not received in the past, adding that Hezbollah would support any group seeking to confront Israel in the Golan Heights.

However, despite the report, officials in the Arab world expressed doubt over the possibility that Damascus will in fact take part in opening a front in the Golan due to Israel's stance that it would hold Assad responsible for any attack coming from Syrian territory. It is believed that Israel would immediately respond to such attacks and strike targets in Syria and Lebanon.

Segundo a universidade londrina King"s College, há 500 europeus na Síria a combater. Desses, diz o jornal Le Monde, 300 são belgas. Depois da cerveja e chocolates, a outra especialidade: ser mobilizado pela Al-Qaeda. De facto, os combatentes belgas vão para a brigada Al-Nosra, o principal grupo djihadista sírio. Termo de comparação: aquele Abu Sakkar que arrancou o coração de um soldado governamental e o trincou (há vídeo) é só chefe da brigada Al-Farouq, que é perseguida pelos da Al-Nosra por serem moderados. Os emigrantes muçulmanos belgas estão desolados com a facilidade de recrutamento dos seus filhos em Bruxelas - é conhecido o caso de dois rapazes de 14 e 16 que partiram. Esses pais, naturalmente, anseiam pelo regresso. Ora, isso não será uma boa notícia para todos. A Argélia ganhou uma guerra civil com os seus jovens regressados do Afeganistão. Desta vez, não serão só jovens combatentes que partiram de cabeça quente e voltarão com ela a ferver. É que voltam para o coração da Europa, para o Estado e nação mais frágeis da União. Junte-se a isso a demografia: em 2030, Bruxelas tem maioria muçulmana.

Eu acho que a expressão «neocon» já está um pouco fora de uso, há pelo menos uns 6 anos.
Os neocons são um grupo de pessoas que não entendeu o verdadeiro sentido da mudança no mundo e pensou que a História tinha chegado ao fim, tentando por isso garantir que, tendo chegado o fim da História, era preciso apenas manter o poder dos Estados Unidos, sustentando o poder economico nos gloriosos produtos financeiros que na altura ainda não eram tóxicos.

Os neocons foram enterrados no dia em que o próprio presidente Bush disse que Wall Street tinha andado a fazer "_erda.

Quando à exportação europeia de extremistas islâmicos, não passa de propaganda.
É mais ou menos como dizer que todos os imigrantes brasileiros são travestis e que todo o brasileiro que sai do país para a Europa vai fazer negócios de sexo.

Seria pura e simplesmente absurdo e patético afirmar isso.

A verdade é que ninguém sabe muito bem como se ver livre do Assad, embora toda a gente já tenha percebido que ele não pode ficar.

Report: Russia sends advanced missiles to Syria, signaling commitment to Assad

New shipment of anti-ship missiles are equipped with advanced radar that makes them more potent, U.S. officials tell New York Times. Meanwhile, Russia sends a dozen warships to protect its naval base on Syria's shores.



Russia has sent advanced anti-ship cruise missiles to Syria, The New York Times reported Thursday, citing American officials.

The officials stated that the move exemplifies the extent of Russia's support for the Syrian government and its embattled leader, President Bashar Assad.

The missiles, called Yakhonts, are equipped with an advanced radar that renders them more effective, according to the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were discussing classified intelligence information.

Unlike the long-range surface-to-surface missiles that stand at the Assad regime's disposal, the Yakhont anti-ship missile system allows the Syrian military to stand against potential efforts by international forces to impose a naval embargo or a no-fly zone on the country, or to carry out limited airstrikes in support of the Syrian opposition.

Syria’s new weaponry would “tend to push Western or allied naval activity further off the coast” and was “a signal of the Russian commitment to the Syrian government,” said Jeffrey White, a fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy and a former senior American intelligence official.

In addition, The Wall Street Journal reported that Russia has dispatched a dozen or more warships to patrol waters near its naval base in Syria, as part of the European country's newly aggressive stance that evidently seeks to deter the West and Israel from getting involved the crisis in Syria.

These reports come just days after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with Russian President Vladimir Putin and asked him not to sell Syria anti-aircraft missiles.

Knesset Member Tzachi Hanegbi on Friday stressed that Israel has no interest in intervening in Syria's civil war, but expressed hope that "the Russians understand that supplying missiles to what could be the most volatile and sensitive region in the world is not the solution."

"The Russians are betting everything they have on the Assad card, and it's unclear why," Hanegbi said in an interview with Israel Radio.

According to the New York Times report, Syria had first ordered the Yakhont missiles from Russia in 2007, and received the first batteries – which did not include the advanced radar – in 2011. It initially ordered 72 missiles, 36 launchers and additional support equipment.

The missiles are 6.7 meters long and can reach a distance of 290 kilometers. Each missile has its own radar to help evade a ship’s defense system. The launchers are mobile, which makes them difficult to target.
