Fincantieri shipbuilding group launched the Italian Navy’s new logistic support ship (LSS), Vulcano (A 5335), at its Muggiano shipyard near La Spezia on 22 June.

Fincantieri has built the LSS under a contract awarded by European defence procurement organisation OCCAR in May 2015 on behalf of the Italian Ministry of Defence. The ship was built in three main hull and superstructure sections at Fincantieri’s Castellammare di Stabia (bow section) and Riva Trigoso (central and stern sections) shipyards. These were then consolidated at Muggiano shipyard’s floating dock.

Outfitting will continue until December this year, when the ship will begin platform and combat system acceptance trials ahead of a planned delivery in September 2019.

Displacing 27,200 tonnes at full load, Vulcano has an overall length of 192.2 m and a beam of 24 m beam. The ship’s centre hull section has been lengthened by 11.2 m to increase space for embarked personnel supporting expeditionary missions; this reflects recent operational experience.

Classed to RINA standards, the double-hulled ship has been designed to support both abeam replenishment at sea (RAS) while underway, and vertical replenishment using up to two embarked EH101 helicopters. The ship can accommodate 235 personnel and is equipped with an enhanced NATO Role 2 medical facility. In the humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) role, it will be able to provide fresh water and electric power to people ashore.

The LSS is equipped with four refuelling stations (two each side) for liquids, two stations (one per side) for heavy load transfer, two stations (one on each side) for light material and one aft refuelling station (for fuel only). Canada’s Hepburn Engineering will provide the RAS package.

Se calhar era melhor mudarem o nome do navio :? :?

Fire breaks out aboard under-construction Italian Navy support ship Vulcano

A fire broke out late Sunday aboard the logistic support ship Vulcano which is under construction at Fincantieri’s Mugiano shipyard in La Spezia.

According to Italian media reports, the fire broke out around 22:30, local time, and originated in the ship’s engine room.

The Italian National Firefighters Corps on Monday said the fire had been brought under control after several hours of efforts. The intervention, which included air and waterborne support, is still ongoing, the service added

Local media reports say the vessel lists to one side. The extent of damage is yet to be determined, however.

A Fincantieri spokesperson confirmed that no one was injured in the fire as no one was on board at the time of the accident. The spokesperson further said that it was too early to know the extent damages and causes of the fire.

The LSS Vulcano is 193-meter long ship which was launched last month in a ceremony attended by Italian defense minister and other high-ranking officials.

The ship was slated for delivery to the navy in 2019. It remains to be seen whether the incident will affect the delivery schedule.

Sea Platforms
Fincantieri launches new LHD for Italian Navy

Luca Peruzzi, Genoa - Jane's Navy International

The Italian Navy's new landing helicopter dock (LHD) Trieste was launched at Fincantieri's Castellammare di Stabia shipyard on 25 May.

The new LHD, which features dual-use capabilities for a wide range of military and humanitarian missions, is being built under a EUR1.1 billion (USD1.3 billion) contract awarded to an industrial consortium comprising prime contractor Fincantieri and Leonardo in July 2015.

Following its launch, Trieste will remain at Castellammare di Stabia shipyard for propulsion and navigation outfitting ahead of platform trials, which are scheduled to take place in March 2020. It will then be moved to Fincantieri's Muggiano shipyard in La Spezia for combat system outfitting and trials, which are scheduled for August 2021, leading to handover to the Italian Navy in 2022.

With a full load displacement of 33,000 tonnes, an overall length of 245 m, and a 47 m beam, the new LHD features a 230×36 m flight deck with a ski-jump (not yet fitted at launch) to support F-35B short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL) operations and nine helicopter landing spots (six on left and three on the right of the flight deck).

The combined diesel electric or gas (CODLOG) propulsion system - comprising two 36 MW Rolls-Royce MT30 gas turbines, two 12 MW MAN 20V32/44R diesel engines, and two 2,25 MW electrical motors on twin shafts - will provide for a maximum speed of 25 kt and a range of 7,000 n miles at 16 kt.

The 25×107 m, circa 2,300 sq m hangar, served by two 40-tonne capacity aircraft lifts, can accommodate aircraft and vehicles (530 lane m). The forward vessel area features a fully equipped NATO Role 2E hospital with operating rooms equipped with 27 beds as well as a 470 sq m amphibious C4I operations area. The main garage underneath and stern well deck can accommodate wheeled and armoured vehicles weighing up to 62 tonnes (235 lane m) and up to four new 23.3 m LC23 landing craft supplied by Cantiere Navale Vittoria.

Dois países que me impressionam pela qualidade e robustez de seus projetos navais: Itália e Espanha.

Servem como exemplo para um determinado país do Hemisfério Sul.
