Brazil Shows The Chinese How To Do It
June 17, 2009: Brazil has agreed to a deal where Chinese sailors will learn aircraft carrier operating skills on the Brazilian Navy's carrier, the "Sao Paulo." Nine years ago Brazil bought the 32,000 ton French aircraft carrier Foch (which was still in service) for $12 million, updated it and renamed it. The navy has not been able to get much cash out of the government to further refurbish the 46 year old Sao Polo, and apparently the Chinese deal will change that.
The "Sao Paolo" was headed for decommissioning, and has been used mainly to train carrier pilots for the last few years. The "Sao Paolo" entered service in 2000, and the Brazilians retired the " Minas Gerais", a World War II era (British) Colossus Class carrier a year later (after 40 years of service). So the Brazilians have a long tradition of carrier operations, and sufficient experienced carrier sailors to teach the Chinese some useful things. Brazil has long been the only South American nation to operate a carrier.

The Sao Polo has a crew of 1,900 and was designed to carry 35 warplanes (smaller, older models like the A-4) and four helicopters. This load can vary depending on aircraft type.

Me digam qual a função dele no contexto da Marinha do Brasil?

Revealed: The awesome aircraft carrier that will be Britain's most powerful warship ever (if it is actually built)

New carriers to dwarf naval base

The flight decks on the new carriers will be the size of 49 tennis courts

The Royal Navy has unveiled an image of how a giant aircraft carrier will look in its base when it is completed.

The computer-generated image was created to give an impression of the scale of the next generation of warships due to enter service in 2015.

It shows one of the carriers alongside Portsmouth Naval Base, Hampshire, where it will take up three jetties.

The government gave the go-ahead for the new HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales vessels last year.

The move came despite criticism the £5bn cost would be better spent elsewhere in the armed forces.

'Huge impact'

The carriers will be the biggest and most powerful warships ever designed and built in the UK.

They will be 230ft (70m) wide and the flight deck area is equivalent to 49 tennis courts or three football pitches and large enough to take up to 40 aircraft.

Captain Paul Lemkes, deputy naval base commander, said: "The image brings home the sheer scale of our future aircraft carriers and there is a great deal of work in hand to ensure that the naval base is ready to support them when they enter service.

"As well as bringing a much-needed addition to the UK's joint military capability, they will be a magnificent sight and will, undoubtedly, make a huge impact on the Portsmouth skyline when alongside as well as generating great interest throughout the region."

Preliminary work is already under way in the naval base to accommodate the vessels.

Three jetties on the western edge of the base will have to be upgraded and extra shore services will be needed, including an increase in electrical supply.

o que é que eu disse?
Aircraft carriers may not be built, says navy head

The head of the navy today conceded that the decision to build two large aircraft carriers could be overturned. Admiral Sir Mark Stanhope said that although contracts had been signed to build HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales, next year's defence review could cause those plans to change. He was speaking on board HMS Illustrious in the presence of the weapons procurement minister, Lady Taylor, who said plans to build a second carrier are "still active".

George Osborne, the shadow chancellor, appeared to cast doubt on the Conservatives' commitment to build the carriers, saying he did not know what the "break clauses" were in the contracts.

Greenpeace predicted that the new carriers would cost £5bn to build, compared with the latest official estimate of £3.9bn. It said operating the carriers, equipping them with F35 strike aircraft, and deploying ships to protect the carriers at sea, could bring the total bill for the project to more than £33bn.Stanhope said the navy was bracing itself for cuts under the defence review. "Alongside the other two services we will have to make some difficult decisions," he said, adding that a balance needed to be struck between the number of ships and submarines the nation could afford and the range of capabilities they offered. "Once capabilities are lost, they can't be plucked from a hat," he added.

One compromise is to cut the number of F35 aircraft. Some navy chiefs believe there are cheaper options and that cheaper carriers could be built as platforms for helicopters and unmanned drones. They also point to the need for fast ships to cope with the growth in piracy.
