Challenger 3 hits milestone ahead of schedule

The Challenger 3 Delivery Team remains on track and within budget as Challenger 3 passes the Critical Design Review.

The Challenger 3 teams from DE&S’ Land Equipment Operating Centre and the British Army, together with our industry partners Rheinmetall BAE Systems Land (RBSL), have been working to progress the CR3 programme at pace and we can now announce that we have approved the Critical Design Review (CDR) ahead of schedule. This follows the Initial Design Review (IDR) held in March 2022 and is the culmination of an enormous amount of collaborative work.

The CDR means that the design for the tanks has been agreed and that RBSL can now start building the CR3 prototypes.

The work was carried out under an £800M contract which was awarded to RBSL in 2021 to deliver 148 upgraded, fully digitalised battle tanks to the British Army from 2027.

The supply-chain sub-contracts have now been awarded to UK supply chain companies, contributing to the government’s levelling up agenda. Following two key design reviews, work to modernise and expand RBSL’s production facility in Telford – which will also manufacture Boxer vehicles – is now almost complete.

The team have also conducted successful trials of a cutting-edge new armour system that will protect the tank; a UK sovereign capability based on a DSTL design and manufactured by RBSL. In parallel and following the Secretary of State for Defence’s acceleration challenge, work is ongoing to deliver Main Battle Tanks earlier.

Outside of the core-contract, but a key future enabler, is the concurrent integration of the Trophy MV Active Protection System (APS). This is progressing well through the Concept and Assessment phases, with a successful demonstration being conducted in Nov 2022.

The fully digitalised tanks will benefit from:

a new 120mm smoothbore gun which uses the most advanced globally available ammunition
a new suite of sights providing tank commanders with enhanced day and night targeting abilities
a new armour solution
an active protection system
a turret that can be fitted to the tanks of allies and global partners
Significantly improved mobility through an upgraded engine and new hydrogas suspension

Eu acho que a Polônia acelerou a compra dos Abrams e do K2 justamente pra passar os Leopard 2PL pras reservas e enviar os PT-91 pra Ucrânia.

IAG to launch production of Rila 8×8 at new plant in Bulgaria

International Armored Group (IAG) will invest in a manufacturing facility located in Bulgaria. The new armoured vehicles plant will be built in the industrial zone of the city of Burgas and will produce the entire product range of the company, including the new Rila 8x8 infantry fighting vehicle.

According to IAG, the groundbreaking ceremony for the new production facility in Burgas will take place on March 15.

“We are glad to have the opportunity to expand our international family with production in Bulgaria, where we invest not only in innovations in defence, but also in specialists that our country needs. With the start of construction, we will mark a key moment in the development of this important project, which will have such a positive impact on Bulgarian industrial production,” IAG owner and CEO Anton Stefov said.

It will be the largest IAG’s production facility worldwide, with an area of 150,00 sqm. More than 300 people will find work there.

According to IAG, the Burgas plant will produce the entire product range of the company, including the new Rila 8×8 infantry fighting vehicle.

The opening of the IAG’s production plant in Burgas will be a significant moment in the history of the Bulgarian defence industry, which has never before produced armoured vehicles in accordance with NATO standards.

The facility in Bulgaria will also produce the new IAG’s products, such as carriers for the artillery systems.
