The US State Department has approved the potential sale of 17 Boeing CH-47F Chinook heavy-lift helicopters to Spain.
Spain is looking to acquire 17 of the latest variant CH-47F Chinooks (pictured) to replace the same number of older CH-47Ds that it currently operates. (US Army)
The sale, which was announced by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) on 4 April, is valued at USD1.3 billion and covers the latest variant of the Chinook, as well as defensive aids and other equipment and support.
With the deal now approved by the US government, it must now go before Congress before being signed-off.
Once in service, the CH-47Fs will replace the 17 CH-47Ds (designated HT.17 in national service) that the Spanish Army has fielded since the 1980s. The enhancements that turn a CH-47D into a CH-47F include a 'glass' cockpit, more powerful engines, and the Digital Automatic Flight Control System (DAFCS).
