Netherlands and Luxembourg to buy two Airbus A330 MRTT multi-role tanker
Aug 9, 2016
Imagem
NATO is preparing a major boost to its ability to refuel aircraft in mid-air, with the signature of an agreement between the Netherlands and Luxembourg to acquire two Airbus A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport (A330 MRTT) aircraft. The new tankers will be acquired on behalf of the participating nations and NATO. They can support NATO and European Union operations, as well as multinational and national ones.

Air-to-air refueling tankers are critical to long-distance deployments in support of other aircraft. NATO’s air campaigns in Kosovo and Libya have identified air-to-air refueling as a critical shortfall in European military capabilities. Individual Allies, as well as NATO and the EU, have been working to address this shortfall.

The Airbus tankers will be able to refuel a wide range of aircraft such as NATO AWACS surveillance planes; F-35, F-16 and Rafale fighter aircraft; and C-17 transport planes. Refuelling can be performed at an altitude up to 35,000 ft while cruising at speeds between 180 knots and 325 knots. The planes will be equipped to perform a wide range of functions in addition to air-to-air refueling such as passenger transport, cargo movement and medical evacuation. Thanks to their flexibility, they will increase European capabilities in strategic passenger transport, cargo transport and medical emergency transport.

The first two aircraft will be assembled in Toulouse, France, and converted into tankers in Getafe, Spain. They will be delivered to NATO in 2020, and will be based in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. More Allies are expected to join this initiative, thus enlarging the fleet in the years ahead.

India to buy C-130J Super Hercules for $134 Million
Aug 19, 2016

The Indian Ministry of Defense has approved buying one C-130J Super Hercules military transport aircraft for INR 900 crore (US $134 million).

The Defense Acquisition Council (DAC) chaired by defense minister Manohar Parrikar on Thursday made a decision to buy the aircraft which, will replace another C-130J aircraft that crashed while practising a tactical operation after taking off from Agra on March 28, 2014.

The IAF had inducted six C-130J Super Hercules aircraft which were bought from the US at a cost of around Rs. 6,000 crore (USD 1 billion) in 2010. India has already ordered for six additional aircraft.

The DAC has also approved procurement of 58 night vision goggles for pilots, for night enablement, Defence sources said.

The DAC reviewed progress of capital acquisition proposals in current financial year. Since May 2016-10 acquisition schemes worth approximately Rs. 16,000 crore have been approved including 6 at CCS level, sources said.

In addition, four major acquisitions worth Rs. 15,000 crore have been cleared by MoD and have been forwarded for consideration of CCS.

With over Rs. 31,000 crore major acquisitions either contracted or at advanced stage – DAC urged the services and the Ministry to expedite process.

It was also said that as against 329 Acceptance of Necessity (AON) worth over Rs. 5 lakh crore in pipeline in April 2014, today there are about 235 AONs in pipeline.

Nigeria looks to buy 12 new Mil Mi-35 assault helicopters
Aug 19, 2016

The Nigerian Air Force will buy Mil Mi-35 assault helicopters from the Russia. That was reported by naij.com.

The Nigerian Air Force is making efforts to boost its capacity in order to meet its responsibilities and to defeat Nigeria’s adversaries. Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Saddique Abubakar said that the Nigerian Air Force would soon take delivery of 12 new Mi-35 attack helicopter gunships fitted with modern facilities to fire guided missiles at enemy positions.

The Mi-35M is a multi-role combat helicopter manufactured by Rostvertol, a subsidiary of Russian Helicopters. It is an export variant of Mi-24 Hind attack helicopter. Primarily designed for attack and military transport missions, the helicopter delivers superior flight performance and manoeuvrability than its predecessor.

The production of Mi-35M started in 2005. The aircraft integrates modern, high-precision weaponry for destroying ground-based armoured targets and providing air support for ground missions. It can be modified as an attack, ground assault, medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) or transport platform.

The Mi-35M is one of the modern combat helicopters in the Russian Air Force inventory. It is also operated by the armed forces of Venezuela, Brazil and Azerbaijan.

The First ATR-72 600 Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) special mission aircraft of Turkish Navy completes the first flight. That was reported by turkishnavy.net.

The ATR 72 ASW based on ATR 72-600 modern regional turboprop aircraft from Leonardo’s Aircraft Division. It is the only mid-sized, new-design aircraft available on the market for this specific role. The Turkish Navy launched the programs with an order for eight aircraft.

The Turkish Undersecretariat for Defence Industries (Savunma Sanayii Müstesarligi (SSM)) released a tender in 2001 for the procurement of maritime patrol aircraft, featuring maritime surveillance capability and onboard mission equipment. These will be used by the Turkish Navy. The Defence Industry Executive Committee (DIEC) signed a contract with Alenia Aermacchi for the ATR-72 600 Anti-Submarine Warfare program in July 2005. It has been 11 years since the contract was signed.

ASW-specific role equipment includes a sono-buoy launcher, Magnetic Anomaly Detector (MAD), two pylons for Mk 46 or Mk 54 LWT torpedoes, ASW weapon release point calculator.

The mission system comprises four workstations and is based on three main sensors (electro-optical turret, search radar and Electronic Support Measures sensors) fully integrated within the mission system and with the flight avionics. The fully integrated self-protection suite includes chaff & flare launchers and radar, missile and laser warning. The configuration also includes an Automatic Identification System (AIS), secure communications systems (Link 11/16) and broadband satellite systems to share information in real time with other platforms (whether in the air or on the surface) or with command and control centres. The aircraft is also equipped with a flight-operable door (or, alternatively, a rear belly hatch) to drop paratroopers or emergency kits and sports large observation windows.

The aircraft uses the ATR 72-600 glass cockpit, with full digital avionics.

US Army Develops New Engine for Black Hawk and Apache Helicopters
Aug 18, 2016

The US Army Aviation and Missile Research, Development and Engineering Center’s Aviation Development Directorate (ADD) is developing a new military helicopter engine that would provide 50% more power at the same weight as the currently fielded engine.

According to Army Tech, the advanced affordable turbine engine (AATE) demonstrator program aims to develop a turboshaft engine with reduced fuel consumption and improved shaft horsepower.

This engine configuration can be fitted into the Black Hawk and Apache installation envelopes, which are also in service in the IAF, as well as current and Future Vertical Lift rotorcraft.

It is said to improve range and payload capability and increase hot and high operational capability for Apache and Black Hawk platforms.

Two cost share arrangements for the engines have been awarded to General Electric and Advanced Turbine Engine Company, a joint venture of Honeywell and Pratt & Whitney.

The AATE program culminated in 2014 with the completion of full engine system demonstrations, which included performance, durability, and sand tests.

The demonstrations significantly mitigated the risks involved with transitioning advanced turboshaft engine technology to a planned program of record, known as the Improved Turbine Engine Program, the US Army said in a statement.

Estou curioso para descobrir onde ficam estes pylons para os torpedos no ATR. Pensei nas asas mas a largura da asa aparenta não ter a área o suficiente para um torpedo e os flaps acabam interferindo também.
