Gripen flies with passive targeting sensor

Saab has successfully test flown a key passive detection capability for its in-development Gripen E fighter, using dedicated test aircraft 39-7.
Developed by Selex ES’s Airborne & Space Systems division, the Skyward-G infrared search and track (IRST) sensor will give the combat aircraft a long-range means of detecting and identifying potential airborne threats, without the need to first switch on its active electronically scanned array radar. Secondary applications include the ability to act as a navigation and landing aid during darkness.
“The first flight in the Gripen E test aircraft with IRST has been performed with very good results,” says Hans Einerth, wing commander flying at Saab’s Linköping production and test site in Sweden. “Multiple targets were detected, tracked and identified, and the system works perfectly.”

Skyward-G comprises a sensor head unit installed in front of the fighter’s cockpit, and an associated processor unit box, which is stowed in the nose avionics bay. The entire system weighs less than 40kg (88lb), says Selex.
“The [IRST] integration and development work is progressing according to schedule,” says Saab. The company is producing three dedicated E-model test aircraft, with its current 39-7 asset being a modified D-model Gripen. The new-generation version should enter use in 2018, with operators expected to include Sweden, plus export customers Brazil and Switzerland; both have yet to finalise planned orders.

BRAZIL ONE STEP CLOSER BUYING GRIPEN
A new agreement between Sweden and Brazil for the Gripen deal takes a step forward. A large Brazilian delegation is now visiting Sweden.
- We will look at how to work out the deal, says Defence Minister Karin Enström, in an exclusive interview with Ny Teknik Magazine.
Sweden and Brazil has today signed an agreement on military cooperation between the two countries. Brazil's Defense Minister Celso Amorim visited this morning Karlberg Castle, where he signed the agreement with the Swedish Defense Minister Karin Enström.
- The agreement applies to cyber defense and equipment for the navy, but affects mainly the purchase of Gripen E, which we believe can meet the Brazilian requirements for air defense. The selection of Gripen was not easy but we weighed in several factors. A combination of technical performance, price, but most of all the possibility of technology transfer, said Celso Amorim at a news conference.
There is still no final agreement on how much of the development and production that will take place in Brazil. But according to plan, 80 percent of production and 40 percent of the development will take place in Brazil, according to Amorim.
The agreement that was signed with Sweden's defense minister today also applies to training of Brazilian pilots and reportedly some of them will already tomorrow train in the Gripen simulators.
Reportedly, next year's presidential elections is one reason why Brazil's delegation is visiting Sweden so quickly after they opted to buy the Gripen E. A new president in Brazil next year may mean that the negotiations on the Gripen purchase may be overturned - and the visit now could be seen as a way to speed things up.
What significance does the agreement that you signed today have for an actual purchase should go through?
- It is of course important. It's very gratifying that Brazil has identified Saab as the preferred bidder. In order to be able to start negotiations some things must be in place. It 's really about two negotiations. One between SAAB and Brazil on the next generation Gripen and then we'll look from government to government on how a bridging solution should look like. Brazil has said it needs to lease some planes before getting the next generation Gripen so that they can learn in the meantime. Then it becomes easier to make the transition to the new aircraft systems. There we have good experiences to teach other countries how to operate this system. We will look at how to work it out for the future and when it may start, says Karin Enström, in an exclusive interview with Ny Teknik.
Is there a risk that Sweden will have to few Gripen aircraft in operation during a certain period?
- This is of course a judgment we must do together with the Armed Forces. While we will maintain our operational capabilities, we plan for this kind of interim solution even with Switzerland. It should of course not affect our readiness and our operational capability. However, the assessment is that it should not do, she says
While it is possible to imagine some concern from the Minister, who hesitate before she continues.
- And here you have to keep track of the number for it is also so that you will be using the C / D -planes (current Gripen aircraft, ed note) and turn them into a new planes. So it comes to having an over all check of course at all the time and we have that together with the Armed Forces and FMV.
Have you discussed the technological development of the Gripen such as adapting the plane to land on aircraft carriers?
- No, it's not at that level that these talks are held. Of course, we talked about the project, we're talking about future collaboration. We already know that there is a desire that has been mentioned when I was in Brazil the year before last year, around what is called Sea Gripen. Now we clear the first steps and it will be a hearing and by experience we know that it takes quite a while, there are many details to be sorted out. But it feels very positive, it's a very good atmosphere. It feels very good between the Swedish and the Brazilian Air Force. I welcome this but you should be aware that negotiations will take time and must take it's time because you have to be agreed in detail as well.
It has been discussed about technology transfer from Sweden to Brazil. Have you discussed technology transfer from Brazil to Sweden, for example from Embraer to Saab?
- Brazil has been very clear here that this is important for them. And they probably think that this can open new doors, but that's what also is very exciting about this. If we cooperate with this type of technology, there may be new opportunities and we are obviously open to that, but we are very early in the process. We have a strategic partnership and now it will be filled with content and it's very good, says defense minister.
Embraer is developing the new military transport aircraft KC- 390, which could replace the aging Swedish Hercules planes when they will be phased out in future. When Saab Gripen renewed its tender to Brazil in 2009 the Swedish government also promised to evaluate the KC-390 as a new transport aircraft. Saab and Embraer may therefore collaborate to provide Sweden with a replacement for the Hercules Planes.
- Saab and Embraer envisage many likely synergies in such cooperation, according to an inside source.
Saab recently also signed a similar contract with aircraft manufacturer Pilatus in Switzerland, to jointly work together to eventually be able to offer Swedish Air Force a new trainer. Switzerland may also be a Gripen Country in the near future. On May 18, Switzerland will hold a referendum about the purchase of 22 new Gripen.

O que tenho visto, desde que o Gripen NG foi escolhido, uma verdadeira campanha de desinformação contra o caça sueco.

This is because the Swedish Air Force needs to have a full operating capability until the new Gripens are delivered, all because of the Ukraine situation. The cost increase due to this would be "negligible" because only a very few old parts would have been used in the new Gripen in the original plan.

Nenhuma outra empresa aeroespacial de toda AL tem o know how da Embraer, em termos de desenvolvimento e produção de aviões. O Gripen NG trará novas tecnologias. Seria um disperdício sem tamanho se a Embraer tivesse um papel importante neste programa.

Porém ajudou a justificar e bombar os gastos e projetos militares da europa ocidental e dos vizinhos russos do oriente.
Vai que o Gripen vira o caça da nova força aérea ucraniana.
