UK to sign for first F-35 Joint Strike Fighters 'within weeks'

The UK is expected to sign a deal "within the next few weeks" to participate in the Lockheed Martin F-35 Joint Strike Fighter's initial operational test and evaluation (IOT&E) phase, says minister for defence equipment and support Quentin Davies.

Davies and representatives from the UK Ministry of Defence's Joint Combat Aircraft integrated project team visited Lockheed's Fort Worth manufacturing site in Texas in February. During the visit they held discussions with officials from the company and the US armed services.

Topics covered in the talks spanned issues such as operational sovereignty, in-service support, the integration of UK-specific equipment and programme costs, says Davies, who adds that the visit "helped answer some questions".

The minister told a launch event for the UK Royal Navy's "Fly Navy 100" celebrations in London on 16 February that he believes the programme is "well under control, and there are already indications on price schedules that we are talking about. I hope that there will be a very positive announcement within the next few weeks."

As the USA's lone Level 1 partner on the JSF project, the UK has long planned to acquire three short take-off and vertical landing F-35Bs during the IOT&E phase to participate in development testing of the fifth-generation type as part of a joint test team. This will inform the MoD's long-term acquisition plans for the type, and enable it "to make suggestions early enough in the programme where it is possible to improve some systems or performances," Davies says.

"The operational testing and evaluation phase is essential," he says. "Some of the other [JSF] customers are prepared to simply buy the aircraft and take it on trust, but I don't think that's a responsible way [for the UK] to act."

Lockheed requires the UK to sign a contract for its IOT&E aircraft by the end of February, but the investment had recently been rumoured as potentially being at risk under the MoD's ongoing financial planning round. However, Davies says: "I have a smile on my face, and I'm confident we shall be able to move forward."

Industry sources suggest that the UK could eventually purchase up to 138 production F-35s to meet its Joint Combat Aircraft requirement, which will deliver new fighters for use by Royal Air Force and RN squadrons, including from two 65,000t Future Aircraft Carriers (artist's impression above).

The RN will mark the centenary of its manned aviation activities on 7 May.

CPB Says No New Dutch Jobs from JSF Project

The Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis (CPB) says taking part in the Joint Strike Fighter aircraft project will not create extra jobs in the Netherlands. The CPB says forecasts that thousands of new Dutch jobs would result from a government decision to work on the development of the new fighter jet are far too optimistic.

MPs instigated the CPB inquiry which took a critical look at an earlier report produced by the professional services giant, PricewaterhouseCoopers. That report concluded 50,000 Dutch jobs would be created by the project, but the CPB says PricewaterhouseCoopers made major errors.

In turn, Dutch companies due to take part in the production of the Joint Strike Fighter have rubbished the CPB report. (ends)


New Fighter Jet Won't Create Jobs, Says CPB

The Netherlands participation in the US project to create a new jet fighter known as the JSF will not create many more jobs, according to the government's macro-economic advisory body CPB.

MPs had asked the CPB to look into the effect of the jet on the the economy after PricewaterhouseCoopers claimed it would bring in EUR 16bn and produce 50,000 man years of employment.

The CPB said PWC's forecasts were 'perhaps considerably overstated'. The advisory firm based its calculations on there being no increase in productivity between now and 2052 and included work done by Dutch multinational companies in foreign countries, the CPB said.

But the organisation representing Dutch firms involved in developing the JSF told news agency ANP that the project had already led to Dutch firms winning orders worth up to EUR 800m.

Meanwhile, the US government's audit office says it is too risky for the Netherlands to decide next year whether or not to order the JSF to replace the air force's aging F16s, ANP reports.

Instead, the decision should be postponed to 2011 or 2012, the audit office told Dutch MPs in Washington on a fact-finding mission. (ends)

Acho que agora não tem mais como parar nem recuar, quanto mais não seja pelo envolvimento todo do establishment político-militar-industrial norte-americano com o projeto , suas parcerias internacionais e pelo fato de ser o best value da quinta geração. No Raptor sim , vejo um futuro imediato sombrio se não liberarem vendas ao exterior.

Ainda nenhum Pais excepto os EUA "encomendou" o JSF. Ainda não existe nenhum contrato de aquisição assinado, os Britânicos devem ser os primeiros, isto nas próximas semanas. Três aviões.

Quanto à possibilidade de o projecto JSF ter "morte subita", não creio, Mestre Dieneces já expôs as razões.

É? Pois eu queria ver os ianques e o resto do mundo encomendando um caça revolucionário e caríssimo em...1930, e a Crise de agora é PIOR do que aquela...

JSF (ou F35, como preferirem) é um programa que só faz dilatar prazos e aumentar custos, é um F22 mono BEM downgraded por praticamente o mesmo preço do original, acredito tanto em seu sucesso quanto no Pai Natal dos tugas...
