Warship Support Moves Forward With Five New Contracts

HM Ships Liverpool, Iron Duke, Cumberland, Chiddingfold and Grimsby are to undergo refits as part of an alliancing strategy which aims to make warship support more sustainable, efficient and affordable.

The award of the five contracts, worth a collective £31 million, represents the first package of work to be managed as part of the developing DLO’s Surface Ship Support Alliance. This is the contracting approach being explored which is designed to seek out the best means of delivering the most effective surface warship maintenance and repair, industrial stability and value for money.

Babcock Engineering Services’ dockyard at Rosyth has been awarded three of the five Royal Navy warship upkeep packages, covering HMS Liverpool, a Type 42 destroyer, and HMS Chiddingfold and HMS Grimsby, Mine Countermeasures Vessels. The other contracts see HMS Iron Duke, a Type 23 frigate, being completed by Fleet Support Limited in Portsmouth, and HMS Cumberland, a Type 22 frigate, being awarded to DML Group.

The three yard operators are working with the DLO to develop the alliancing strategy and to share surface warship support workload in a way which best meets their collective business needs, while providing a good deal for the taxpayer.

The development of the Surface Ship Support Alliance is a key element of the Maritime Industrial Strategy sustainment strategy, as it aims to ensure retention of the key maritime defence capabilities identified by the Defence Industrial Strategy.

Emoção em simulação de guerra



Os banhistas que aproveitavam ontem o dia de sol na praia da Ponta Negra foram surpreendidos por uma simulação de guerra, na demonstração de Operação Naval de Desembarque e invasão do território inimigo. O balneário mais popular da cidade e as águas do rio Negro , onde estava sendo realizada a 34º Maratona Aquática Almirante Tamandaré, foram palcos da simulação.
Sete navios-patrulha fluviais (Napaflus), 18 lanchas de ação rápida, quatro helicópteros do 3º Esquadrão de Helicópteros de Emprego Geral e 200 fuzileiros navais fizeram parte da apresentaram em comemoração da Semana da Marinha.

Uma cena chamou a atenção. Uma menina que assistia à cena, ficou assustada ao ver um dos fuzileiros morto na praia. Sem saber que se tratava de simulação, ela entrou em desespero e começou a chorar. Foi preciso que a levassem próximo do soldado e ele, discretamente dar um sinal de vida à ela. Foi o suficiente para ela se acalmar e voltar a brincar.

As comemorações da Semana da Marinha será encerrada depois de amanhã, quando se comemora o Dia do Marinheiro. Será realizada uma cerimônia comemorativa aos marinheiros e ao patrono da Força, o almirante Joaquim Marques de Lisboa, o Marquês de Tamandaré.

A festa será comemorada na sede do Comando do 9º Distrito Naval. Na ocasião, serão homenageados o presidente da Federação do Comércio do Estado do Amazonas, José Roberto Tadros; e o presidente da Federação da Agricultura do Amazonas, Eurípedes Ferreira Lins.

Super-fast sub receives R&D propulsion

The U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has awarded more than $11 million in contracts to support development of the Underwater Express, a future submarine able to reach submerged speeds of up to 100 knots.
General Dynamics’ Electric Boat subsidiary has won a $5.7 million deal with two options worth $31.4 million, while Northrop Grumman Electronic Systems has signed a $5.4 million contract with two options worth more than $40 million.
DARPA hopes its investment will result in a technical breakthrough in supercavitation, or the practice of surrounding a submerged object with a gas bubble through which it travels at high speed.
Supercavitation can reduce the drag on an underwater body by up to 70 percent, according to DARPA. It may be attained by going fast enough to develop a “full vaporous cavity,” or may be induced at lower speeds by injecting gas into a partially developed cavity.
If the theory proves viable, DARPA expects it to lead to the creation of a “new class of underwater craft for future littoral missions that could involve the transport of high-value cargo and/or small units of personnel.”
Initial steps, however, call for the creation of a subscale “super-fast submerged transport (SST)” demonstrator, one quarter to one-half the size of a notional future craft with an eight-foot diameter and weighing around 60 tons.

Previous efforts at supercavitation have focused on expendable weapons, such as the Russian-built Shkval (Squall), and German (Diehl BGT Defence) Barracuda — underwater anti-torpedo missiles capable of 200 knots or faster.
In the U.S., C Tech Defense is developing its Rapid Airborne Mine Clearance System, which launches supercavitating projectiles from a hovering helicopter.
Various specialized firearms designed to defeat frogmen, including the Heckler & Koch P11 underwater pistol and Simonov APS assault rifle, fire steel darts that exploit the supercavitation principle to some degree.

LONDON (Reuters) - Two U.S. sailors were killed after falling overboard from a nuclear-powered submarine as it left the southern English port of Plymouth on Friday, the U.S. Navy said.

Two other sailors who fell overboard from the USS Minneapolis-St. Paul suffered minor injuries but were later released from hospital, a spokesman for the U.S. Navy's 6th fleet in Italy said.

The Navy said the cause of the accident was under investigation.

The Minneapolis-St. Paul had spent a week in port at Plymouth and was leaving the Devonport naval base when the accident happened.

Sixth fleet spokesman Lieutenant Chris Servello said the four sailors were rescued by fellow crew members and British authorities after falling overboard and were taken to a local hospital, where two of them were pronounced dead.

The Navy was not releasing the names of the dead sailors pending notification of next of kin, he said.

The submarine remained at sea after the accident, he said.

The Minneapolis-St. Paul has its home port at Norfolk, Virginia.

Noticia velha, mas mostra mais uma vez o custo Iraque o aumento de custos dos Type 45 e os novos porta-aviões.
Pelo visto no começo de 2007 talvez, eu disse talvez , leles decidam desativar algumas fragatas que prestem para quem deseja compra-las.
Quanto a RNA acho que vários daqueles navios construídos no final de sessenta e meio de setenta devem ser desativados. Talvez até algum dos 80.
Acho que a América Latina vai as compras.

Decisions to be taken by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) in early 2007 will determine whether a number of UK Royal Navy (RN) and Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) vessels are withdrawn from frontline operations and placed in deep reserve.

The MoD insists that "no decisions have been taken" on reducing the readiness level of selected RN and RFA ships. However, Jane’s understands that several options are being run by the MoD, as part of its biennial planning round, to assess the extent of the savings that could be realised by placing selected ships at extended readiness.

The measures, if implemented, would take the operational fleet substantially below the levels laid down in the government's 2004 defence White Paper. They could also signal the effective retirement of a number of RN ships with relatively limited lifespan remaining.
